今、私たちはレントを過ごしています。レントとは四旬節あるいは受難節と言い、イースターから46日前の灰の水曜日からイースター前日までの期間を指します。この教会の協力牧師だった北芳正先生は、イエス様の十字架のご苦難を覚え、お好きなコーヒーを我慢されていたことを思い出します。また、カーソン・フーシー、ローラ・フーシー宣教師がめぐみ幼稚園の一階を全部使って受難週のアクティビティーをしてくださったことがあり、参加者は受難週にちなんだクイズに挑戦したり、十字架のクラフトをして、楽しみました。その中に「あなたの賜物は？」と「あなたの罪は？」と考えるコーナーがありました。受難週は自分の罪、について考える時期なのだなあと改めて思ったことを記憶しています。
私は、生活の中で様々行き詰まり、どうしようもなくなっていた時、近所の方に誘われて教会に通うようになったのですが、通い始めた当初は、罪、ということがよくわかりませんでした。
ある日の水曜の聖書を学ぶ会で、創世記３章の話を聞きました。神様が土の塵から作られたアダムの、あばら骨から作られたエバが蛇に誘惑されて、「園の中央にある木以外のどの木の実を食べてもよい」という神様の言葉に従わず、知恵の木から実をとって食べてしまい、アダムにも勧めて食べさせました。この二人が「神様のようになりたい」と思い、自分の欲のままに行動し神様から離れたこと。これが原罪、人間すべての罪。そして、神と人は決定的に断絶してしまった。」ということを教えていただきました。その当時、私自身が「何にも頼らず自分の力で人生を何とかしよう」としていたので、神様から離れている私もまた、罪人である、とその時気づかされました。
更に私は、と言えば文句が多く、自分に甘く他人に厳しい等、様々な罪、欠けがあります。
ヨハネの手紙一２章１節ｂ：たとえ罪を犯しても、御父のもとに弁護者、正しい方、イエス・キリストがおられます。この方こそ、私たちの罪、いや、わたしたちの罪ばかりでなく、全世界の罪を償ういけにえです。わたしたちは、神の掟を守るなら、それによって、神を知っていることがわかります。「神を知っている」と言いながら、神の掟を守らないものは、偽りの者で、その人の内には真理がありません。しかし、神の言葉を守るなら、まことにその人の内には神の愛が実現しています。
このみ言葉を読んで、私たちすべての人の罪をイエス様が贖ってくださったことを改めて思いました。神と人間との断絶をイエス様がとりなし、再びつなぎ合わせてくださいました。計り知れない恵みに感謝します。
そして、神を愛し、隣人を愛しなさいというイエス様の教えに、相いれないことが、大小さまざまあるけれども『罪』なのだと考えたほうがシンプルでわかりやすい、と気づきました。日常生活で何か言ったり行動するときに一瞬立ち止まる指針にもなると思います。神の言葉を守るなら、まことにその人の内には神の愛が実現していますということばのとおりに歩んでいきたい、歩ませてください、と祈ります。
私は月1回礼拝の奏楽奉仕をさせていただいています。聖書箇所と説教題から、ふさわしい讃美歌をと祈りつつ選ぶのですが、ある時「イエス様は友」という内容の讃美歌を選んで伴奏の練習をして、迎えた礼拝では「イエス様は主」というメッセージが語られたことがありました。イエス様とはどんな表現をもってしても、とても語りつくせないお方なのだ、ともいえると思いますが、メッセージと応答の讃美歌がしっくり合わなかったときには、あ～失敗したと一時落ち込んだりします。これも自意識過剰の罪、かもしれません。
イエス様を表す言葉はたくさんあります。神のひとりご、救い主、友、先生、王、ダビデの子、等少し読むだけでも聖書にはいろいろな表現で出てきます。
ユダヤの人々はイエス様のことを何者だと思っていたのでしょうか。イエス様のいやしの業を見聴きして、大勢の人がイエス様の後をついてまわりました。5000人の食事の奇跡を聞きつけて「食べ物にあずかりたい」、病気を癒された人のうわさを聞いて「自分もよくなりたい」と思うよりも「見てみたい」と物珍しさだけで集まった人もたくさんいたのではないでしょうか。
イエス様は「神の国」の話をされましたが、聞いた人々には「ローマよりも強い国を作ってくれて生活が楽になる」と「自分なりの理解」により期待が膨らみました。十字架が目前になった過ぎ越しの祭の際、イエス様のエルサレム入場を「ホサナ、ホサナ」と大歓迎した人が大勢いました。その、同じ群衆がわずか数日で「イエスを十字架につけろ！」と怒鳴りはやし立てたのだろうと思います。見えるもの、理解しやすいものに飛びつく、その立ち位置が昨日と今日でガラッと変わってしまうことに何ら恥じることもありません。イエス様の十字架の死を目撃してもなお、大多数は何も変わらなかったのではないか、と悲観的ですが想像してしまいます。
十二人の弟子たちは、イエス様のことを、先生とか主、と呼びました。彼らは何もかも捨ててイエス様に従いましたが、イエス様が本当に何者であるか、十字架と復活の出来事以前には、わからなかったのです・・と聖書を読める私たちには、後の出来事も知っているので、そう言えるわけですが、弟子たちが「自分なりに理解している」イエス様を信じて従っていったのだろうな、と思われるエピソードがいくつも出てきます。イエス様は弟子たちを愛されて、およそ３年の間、言葉を尽くして、新しい掟について、そして神の国について伝えてくださいました。しかし、弟子たちは自分たちなりの理解で、ああでもない、こうでもないと言い合います。弟子の間で誰が一番偉いか、と議論したり、イエス様が栄光を受けられるときにその右の座と左の座に私たちをつけてください、と頼んだり。イエス様のすぐそばで生活していた間にはわかりませんでした。イエス様のその真意を理解できたのは、イエス様がおられなくなった後のことになります。
ペトロは十二弟子の中で一番に名前が出て来る人です。ガリラヤの漁師でしたが、イエス様に「人間を取る漁師になる。」と言われ、何もかも捨てて従いました。
イエス様に「あなた方は私を何者だというのか」と問われ、「あなたはメシア、生ける神の子です」と答えました。（マタイ16：15－16）イエス様は主である、と信仰告白したのです。とても忠実で、一生懸命な人のようです。ヨハネ福音書では、イエス様に足を洗ってもらったときに、「主よ、足だけでなく手も頭も」とリクエストしてしまった、少しおっちょこちょいの愛すべき人物だったようです。ペトロを始め弟子たちはイエス様から死と復活の話を聞き、不安になることはあったでしょうが、何が起こるか想像できずに、どこか呑気にイエス様との最後の時を過ごしていたと思います。
マタイ22：31－32
シモン、シモン、サタンはあなたがたを、小麦のようにふるいにかけることを神に願って聞き入れられた。しかし、わたしはあなたのために、信仰が無くならないように、と祈った。だから、あなたは立ち直ったら、兄弟たちを力づけてやりなさい。」するとシモンは「主よ、御一緒なら、牢に入って死んでもよいと覚悟しております」と言った。イエスは言われた。「ペトロ、言っておくが、あなたは今日、鶏が鳴くまでに三度わたしを知らないというだろう」
ゲッセマネの園に向かう前の切迫した時、イエスさまはペトロに語られました。
ペトロはご一緒なら牢に入って死んでもよいと覚悟しております、と威勢よく返事しました。イエス様はペトロが３度イエスのことを知らない、ということをご存じでした。実際に、捉えられたイエス様を追いかけて、大祭司の家の中庭にまで行ったものの、そこで「あの人を知らない」と３回も言ってしまったペトロが、自分の弱さを後悔することもご存じだったでしょう。イエス様は、ペトロの裏切り、ペトロの弱さを前もって知っておられるけれど、もうお前は弟子じゃない、私を知らないと言ったら地獄に落ちるよ、なんてことはおっしゃいませんでした。ペトロのためにとりなしの祈りをすでにされていました。その時のペトロには理解できなかったけれど、希望を捨てずその後の人生を生き続けることができたのはイエス様のことばがあったからではないか、と思います。イエス様はペトロのために、信仰がなくならないように祈った。だからあなたは立ち直ったら、兄弟たちを力づけてやりなさい。＝どれだけ後悔しようとも、自暴自棄にならないで！！信仰を捨てないで！！とおっしゃったのです。
他の弟子にも「あなたがたは皆私につまずく」と話されましたが、ペテロに特に知らせたのは、ペテロに兄弟たちを力づける役割を担わせるためだったのでしょう。ペテロが他の弟子より先に立ち直るように。そして、復活のイエス様に出会った後、ペテロは聖霊により力をいただいて初代教会のリーダーとして立つことになるのです。
神様がひとりごのイエス様をこの世にくださり、何の罪もないのにイエス様は十字架にかかられ、それにより私たちの罪は永遠に赦されました。神様はいつも・いつまでも私たちを赦し、愛し、励まし続けてくださっています。
ペトロの弱さは誰にでもある弱さだと思います。今、この世的にはクリスチャンだと立ち位置をはっきりさせることにさえ勇気がいることがありますし、数えきれないほどの罪を犯す私たちだと思います。イエス様はそのような弱さを抱えたまま、私のところに来なさい、と招いておられます。私たちは喜んで、この恵み、招きを受けましょう。そして神様に喜ばれる生き方を聖霊に導かれつつ選び取っていきましょう。
『霊の結ぶ実は愛であり、喜び、平和、寛容、親切、善意、誠実、柔和、節制です。これを禁じる掟はありません。』ガラテヤ5：22

" God who forgives, loves, and encourages "
Scripture reading taken from Luke 22:31-34
We are currently in a period called Lent. Lent is a shortened form of the old English word lencten, meaning “spring season”, and refers to the period from Ash Wednesday which is 46 days before Easter to the day before Easter. This reminds me of Yoshimasa Kita sensei, a cooperating pastor of this church, who remembers the hardships of Jesus' cross by abstaining from his favourite coffee. In addition, missionaries Carson Foushee and Laura Foushee used to organize activities on the ground floor of Megumi Kindergarten during Holy Week, and participants can take quizzes related to Holy Week and craft crosses. It was an enjoyable time. Among them was a corner to think about your gifts and sins. I remembered thinking that Holy Week is the time to think about my sins.
When I got stuck in my life and couldn't help it, I was invited by a neighbour to go to church, but when I first started going to church, I didn't understand what sin was.
One day at a Bible study meeting on Wednesday, I listened a story about Genesis chapter 3. Eve, who was made from the ribs of the man Adam which was made from the dust of the earth was tempted by the snake and did not obey God's words, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and devil.” Eve took the fruit from the tree of wisdom and ate it and recommended it to Adam to eat it. I was told that these two people thought "I want to be like God" and acted according to their own desires and separated from God. This is the original sin, the sin of all human beings resulting in God and man being conclusively disconnected. At that time, I was trying to manage my life with my own power without relying on anything, so I realized at that time that I, who is far from God, is also a sinner.
Furthermore, I have many complaints, and I have various sins and deficiencies, such as being lenient to myself and being strict with others.
But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. 1 John 2:1-5
Reading this word reminded me that Jesus redeemed the sins of all of us. Jesus intervened in the disconnection between God and humans and reconnected them. Thank you for the immeasurable grace.
Then, I realized that it is simpler and easier to understand that "sin" is being unable to love others despite Jesus’ teaching to love God and love our neighbours. I think it can be a guide to stop us for a moment when we say or do something in our daily life. If someone wants to keep the word of God, I pray that they will walk according to the word that God's love is realized in that person.
I perform a worship service once a month. From the Bible passages and sermon titles, I pray for a suitable hymn. There is one time I chose a hymn with the content "Jesus is a friend" and practiced playing that hymn. That day, the sermon’s message was "Jesus is the Lord". I think it can be said that Jesus is a person who can be described in many ways, but when the hymns and the sermons do not match, I get depressed thinking that I failed. This may also be a sin of self-consciousness.
There are many words that describe Jesus. One and only Son of God, the Saviour, a friend, a teacher, a king, the son of David, etc. Even if you read a little, you can find various expressions in the Bible.
Who did the Jewish people think Jesus was? Many people followed Jesus after hearing the healing work of Jesus. People who heard the miracle of feeding the 5,000 people and “want to take part in the feeding” and heard the rumours of people who were healed from their illness and said, "I want to see" rather than "I want to improve myself". I think there were many such people.
Jesus talked about "the kingdom of God," but the people who heard it thought that it is a country that is “stronger than Rome” and that they “can have an easier life” there. And thus, their expectation was raised due to their “own understanding”. At the Passover festival when the cross was just around the corner, many people welcomed Jesus' admission to Jerusalem as "Hosanna, Hosanna." I think that it was the very same crowd that shouted, "Crucify Jesus!" days later. There is nothing to be ashamed of jumping to something that is visible or easy to understand, and that its standing position has changed drastically between yesterday and today. I pessimistically imagine that the majority of people who witnessed the death of Jesus' cross did not change their ways.
The twelve disciples called Jesus the teacher or the Lord. They abandoned everything and obeyed Jesus, but they didn't know who Jesus really was before the events of the cross and the resurrection ... I can say that because I know it, but there are many episodes in which it seems that the disciples believed and followed Jesus based on their “own understanding”. Jesus loved his disciples and spent about three years telling them about the new commandments and about the kingdom of God. However, the disciples argue with their own understanding that this is not the case. They were discussing who is the greatest among them and ask him to put them on his right and left seats when Jesus is glorified. They didn't know while living with Jesus. It was only after Jesus was gone that they could understand the true meaning of Jesus.
Peter is the first of the twelve disciples. He was a Galilean fisherman, but Jesus said, "Become a fisher of man," and he abandoned everything and obeyed.
He was asked Jesus, “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God." (Matthew 16: 15-16) He confessed his faith that Jesus was the Lord. He is very loyal and seems to be a hard worker. In the Gospel of John, when Jesus washed his feet, he seemed to be a little sloppy and lovable person who requested, "Lord, not only my feet, but my hands and head." Peter and the disciples would have been worried when they heard about death and resurrection from Jesus, but they couldn't imagine what would happen, and probably spent the last moment with Jesus in ignorance/carefreely.
Luke 22: 31-32
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” Simon replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
Jesus spoke to Peter before heading to the Garden of Gethsemane.
Peter replied vigorously that he is prepared to go into prison and die with him. Jesus knew that Peter would deny him three times. In fact, despite chasing after the captured Jesus and going to the courtyard of the high priest’s house, Peter knew that he regrets his weakness where he says "I don't know that person" three times. Jesus knew Peter's betrayal and Peter's weaknesses in advance, but he didn't say that you were no longer a disciple, and that if you didn't know me, you would fall into hell. He had already been praying for Peter. I couldn't understand Peter at that time, but I think it was because of Jesus' words that he was able to continue living the rest of his life without giving up his hope. Jesus prayed for Peter not to lose his faith. So when you recover, empower your brothers. = No matter how much you regret, don't be desperate!!! Don't give up your faith!!! Said Jesus.
He also said to the other disciples, "All of you will stumble," but perhaps Peter was informed specifically to let Peter take on the role of empowering his brothers, that Peter may recover before the other disciples. And after meeting the resurrected Jesus, Peter will be empowered by the Holy Spirit to stand as the leader of the Early Christianity.
God gave his one and only son, Jesus, to this world
Jesus was crucified without any sin, and our sins were forgiven forever.
God has always forgiven, loved, and encouraged us forever.
I think Peter's weakness is a weakness that everyone has. Nowadays, as Christians in the world, even clarifying our position requires courage, and I think we are the ones who are committing countless sins. Jesus is inviting me to come to him with such weaknesses. We will gladly accept this blessing and invitation. And let's choose a way of life that pleases God while being guided by the Holy Spirit.
"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22
