準備期間
待降節（アドベント）の2週目を迎えました。アドベントとは「到来」を意味する言葉で、クリスマス前の4番目の日曜日から始まる期間です。それは第一にイエス・キリストの到来であるクリスマスを準備する期間であり、それと共に復活の主が再び来られることにも心を向ける期間です。
クリスマスには準備が必要です。それはクリスマスツリーやリースを飾ったり、プログラムを用意したりすることだけではありません。イエス様の誕生も、あるとき突然に起こったのではなく、それに向かう準備がありました。神様はイエス・キリストの誕生に向けて準備の時を整えられました。そして準備の期間を過ごした人々を通して、クリスマスの出来事が起こりました。
私たちは12月25日がクリスマスであることを知っているので、待降節が準備の時であり、それがいつ終わるのか、ということも知っています。しかし、イエス様の誕生に携わった人たちは、自分がそれに向けた準備期間を過ごしているとはわからずにいたことでしょう。私たちも、自分がその渦中にいるときには、準備期間であることがわからず、後からそうだったことに気づくものです。
そうであれば、私たちは今、今年のクリスマスに向かう準備の期間を過ごしているだけでなく、それとは異なる神様の計画のうちにあり、神様が成そうとしておられる出来事に向かう準備の時を過ごしているのかもしれません。そのような時の過ごし方を、ザカリアとエリサベトの体験から考えてみたいと思います。
祈り続けるという準備
ザカリアとエリサベトは祭司の家系に属する敬虔な人たちでした。その敬虔さは、「二人とも神の前に正しい人で、主の掟と定めをすべて守り、非のうちどころがなかった」（1:6）とまで言われるほどですから、二人は真面目で、誠実で、熱心で、親切な人柄だったのでしょう。ただ二人には長年の悩みがありました。それは年をとり、子を産む年齢ではなくなるときまで、二人の間に子どもが生まれなかったことでした。
当時の人々は、子どもがいないのは、神様の祝福から除かれてしまったからだ、と考えていました。特に女性にとっては、それは恥ずべき事とされていました。誰よりも正しい人として生きてきた二人にとって、そのことは取り去ることのできない痛みとなっていたと思われます。
祭司であったザカリアには、エルサレム神殿での務めを行うことがありました。それは祭司の家系の２４組が順番に担当していた務めです。ザカリアの属するアビヤ組には、およそ８００人の祭司がいたといいますが、神殿の中で香をたく務めをするのは、くじ引きで当たった一人だけでした。ですから、その務めをするのは一生に一度の経験だったと考えられます。
ある時、ザカリアにくじが当たったので、彼は神殿の中に入って香をたきました。するとそこに主の天使が現れ、ザカリアに言いました。「恐れることはない。ザカリア、あなたの願いは聞き入れられた。あなたの妻エリサベトは男の子を産む。その子をヨハネと名付けなさい。」（1:13）
天使のお告げは、神殿でなければ行えなかったわけではありません。けれども、一生に一度の務めの時にそれが起こったとすれば、それまでのザカリアとエリサベトが歩んだ日々は、このときに向かう準備のときでもあったのかもしれません。天使はザカリアに、「あなたの願いは聞き入れられた」と言いました。ザカリアとエリサベトは、ずっと祈って来たのです。その願いが叶えられるのか、叶えられるとしたらいつになるのか、二人にはわかりませんでした。わからなくても、その日・その時に向かって祈りつつ歩む日々が、神様が事を成す日に向けた準備の時となりました。
思い描くことと、思い返すこと
天使のお告げを聞いたザカリアは、戸惑いながら答えました。「何によって、わたしはそれを知ることができるのでしょうか。わたしは老人ですし、妻も年をとっています」（1:18）。すると天使は告げ知らせた事の起こる日まで、ザカリアの口が利けなくなり、話すことができないようにさせました。
神殿での務めの期間が終わり、ザカリアが家に帰った後、エリサベトは身ごもりました。するとエリサベトは５か月の間、身を隠していました。そうしなければならないという規定があったわけではありません。高齢のため大事をとったのか、あるいはお腹が大きくならないうちは誰も信じないと思ったからか、その理由はわかりません。とにかく５か月の間、彼らの家には、口の利けなくなったザカリアと、身を隠すエリサベトだけがいました。
二人はその期間を、どのように過ごしたのでしょうか。話をすることはできませんが、二人は神様が自分たちの祈りを聞いてくださったことを知り、そのこと――子どもの誕生――が起こる日を待ち望んで日々を過ごしましたのでしょう。生まれてくる子のことを思う時もあったでしょう。それに、神様のことを思い、神様がこれまでに起こされたこと、伝えられてきたことを思う日々でもあったのではないかと想像します。
準備する、というのは、何かの活動や行動をすることばかりではありません。これから起ころうとしていることを思い描くことも準備であり、これまで起こったことを思い返すことも準備になります。特に、神様が起こそうとすることへの準備は、そのように行われるのです。
神様への期待と信頼を育む時
エリサベトの妊娠から6か月目に、もう一つの大きな出来事が起こりました。それは、マリアのもとに天使が現れ、彼女に子を産むことを告げたことです。その子こそ、イエス・キリストでした。突然の知らせに驚き戸惑うマリアに対して、天使はエリサベトのことを告げました。
「あなたの親類エリサベトも、年をとっていたのに、もう六か月になっている。神にできないことは何一つない。」（1:36-37）
それを聞いたマリアは、天使の言葉を受け入れました。そして急いでエリサベトに会いに行きました。マリアを迎えたエリサベトは、マリアとそのお腹の子に祝福を告げました。そしてマリアは３か月の間、エリサベトのところに滞在しました。
イエス様の誕生に向かう準備の期間には、母マリアがエリサベトと共に過ごした時期があったのです。もし、エリサベトの妊娠がなく、マリアが天使のお告げを聞いたとしたら、彼女はそれを受け入れることができたでしょうか。マリアにとって、神様が先立ってエリサベトに子を与えた、ということは、大きな励ましとなったのだと思います。
婚約中だったマリアは、一人で天使のお告げを受けることになりました。エリサベトのもとへ行くまで、おそらく婚約者のヨセフにも、あるいは親や友人たちにも、何も言っていなかったのでしょう。もしマリアが誰かにこのことを話したとしても、誰もそれが本当だとは信じられなかったからです。しかし神様はエリサベトにも子を与え、その時期が重なるようにマリアにも子を与えたのです。天使から誕生が告げられ、神様に祝福された子どもをお腹に宿したエリサベトが、誰よりもマリアの理解者となりました。マリアはエリサベトと過ごした３か月間の間に、天使のお告げをしっかりと受け止めることができたことでしょう。
準備の期間は、一人で思い巡らすだけではなく、先立って神様の御業を経験した人と共に過ごし、将来への期待や神様への信頼を育む時でもあります。マリアの置かれた状況は厳しいものでしたが、彼女を励まし、支えてくれるエリサベトがいたことも、必要なことだったのです。
私たちも準備の時を過ごす
私たちはあと19日でクリスマスを迎えることを知っています。けれども、主イエスの再臨の時がいつになるのかは知りません。また、神様がこの世でいつどんなことを成されるのかも知り得ません。それでも、私たちも今、神様のご計画の中で、準備の時を過ごしているのかもしれません。
ザカリアとエリサベトは、願いが叶えられない痛みを抱えながら、それでも神様に誠実に生き、祈り続けていました。そしていよいよ神様からのお告げがあり、事が始まった時にも、静かに神様に思いを向け、神様が成されたことを思いめぐらしていました。
さらに、ザカリアとエリサベトが過ごしてきた準備の期間は、二人だけのものではなく、若いマリアにとっての準備の時と繋がっていきました。そのように過ごしてきたエリサベトの存在が、誰よりもマリアの支えと励ましとなったのです。
神様は今の時代にも、また私たちにも計画をもっておられます。私たちもまた、ザカリアやエリサベトのように、神様のなされることに期待しながら、その時を待つ準備の時を過ごします。クリスマスに向かう準備の時を過ごした人々、またその人々がクリスマスに大きな喜びに包まれたことを覚えたいと思います。

"Are you prepared?"

Preparation period
We have reached the second week of Advent. Advent is a word that means "arrival" and is the period starting on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. It is the period of preparation for Christmas, the arrival of Jesus Christ, and the period where we turn our attention to the coming of the resurrected Lord.
We need to prepare for Christmas. It's not just about decorating Christmas trees and wreaths and arranging programs. The birth of Jesus did not happen out of nowhere, it was pre-planned. God has prepared for the birth of Jesus Christ. And through the people who spent that period preparing, the Christmas event happened.
We know that December 25th is Christmas, so we also know that Advent is the time to prepare and when it will end. However, those involved in the birth of Jesus would not have known that they were preparing for it. We too don't know it's a preparatory period when we're in the middle of it, and only after it is over, realize that it was.
If so, we may not be only in the process of preparing for Christmas this year, but also in a different plan of God, spending time preparing for the event that God is trying to accomplish. I would like for us to look at how Zachariah and Elizabeth spent their time preparing.
Preparing in the form of continuous prayer
Zachariah and Elizabeth were devout people of the priestly family. Their piety is so serious that it is said that they were both righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly (1: 6). They must have been sincere, enthusiastic, and kind people. However, they had something that was troubling them for many years. It was that they were childless until they were very old and were at the age where they can no longer have children.
People at that time thought that they had no children because they were excluded from God's blessings. It was a humiliation, especially for women. For the two who have lived as people more righteous than anyone else, that was a pain that never went away.
Zachariah sometimes serves as a priest in the temple in Jerusalem as it was his duty as part of the 24 groups of the priestly family. The 24 priestly families take turns being the priest on duty. It is said that there were about 800 priests in the Abia group, to which Zachariah belongs. But only one person was chosen by lottery and gets to go in the temple of the Lord and burn incense. Therefore, it is thought that it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be able to perform that task.
At one point, Zachariah was chosen by lottery, so he went inside the temple and burned incense. Then the angel of the Lord appeared there and said to Zachariah. "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John." (1:13)
It's not that the angel's announcement could only be done in the temple. But if that happened during a once-in-a-lifetime duty, it could be said that the days that Zachariah and Elizabeth had led up to that point may have been the time to prepare for this event. The angel told Zachariah, "Your wish has been heard." Zachariah and Elizabeth have been praying all the time. They didn't know if that wish would come true, and if so, when. Even if you don't know, the days of praying for that day and the time spent have become the time to prepare for the day when God will do things.
Envisioning and recalling
After hearing the angel's announcement, Zachariah replied with confusion. "How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years" (1:18). The angel then made Zachariah dumb and unable to speak until the day that happens.
Elizabeth became pregnant after Zachariah returned home from his temple duties. Then Elizabeth went into seclusion for 5 months. There were no regulations that stating that she needed to go into seclusion. It could have been because they wanted to take care of themselves because of their old age, or because they thought no one would believe that she is pregnant as her stomach is not swelling yet. Anyway, for five months, the muted Zachariah and Elizabeth remained in seclusion in their home.
How did they spend that period? Though no conversations could happen between them, they probably spent their days waiting for the day knowing that God had heard their prayers which was birthing a child. I am also sure that there were also times when they thought of their would-be new-born child. I also imagine that it was a time where they think about God and about what God had done and what God wanted to convey to them.
Preparing is not just about taking actions. It is also to imagine what is about to happen, and also to reflect on what has happened so far. Especially in the case of God, that is how God prepares for what he is trying to do.
Time to foster expectations and trust in God
Six months after Elizabeth's pregnancy, another big event happened. It was that an angel appeared to Mary and told her that she would give birth. That child was Jesus Christ. To the Mary who was surprised and confused by the sudden news, the angel also told her about her relative Elizabeth.
"Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail." (1: 36-37)
Upon hearing that, Mary accepted the words of the angel. Then she hurried off to see Elizabeth. Elizabeth welcomed Mary and congratulated and blessed Mary and her child. And Mary stayed at Elizabeth for three months.
During the preparation period for the birth of Jesus, there was a time when her mother Mary spent time with Elizabeth. If Elizabeth wasn't pregnant when Mary heard the angel's announcement, could Mary accept the news? I think it was a great encouragement for Mary that God gave Elizabeth a child in advance.
Mary, who was engaged, received the news by an angel alone. She probably didn't say anything to her fiancé Joseph, or to her parents and friends, before going to meet Elizabeth. If Mary told someone about this, no one could believe it was true. However, God planned in such a way that Elizabeth and Mary were pregnant in the same time period. Elizabeth, who was told by an angel that she would be pregnant and have a child blessed by God in her stomach, understood Mary more than anyone else. Mary would have been able to accept the angel's message firmly during the three months she spent with Elizabeth.
The period of preparation is not only a time to ponder alone, but also a time to spend time with someone who has experienced God's work in advance and to foster expectations for the future and trust in God. Maria's situation was tough, but it was also necessary that Elizabeth was there to encourage and support her.
We should also spend time preparing
We know that Christmas will be in 19 days. But we don't know when the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus is. Also, we do not know when and what God will do in this world. Even so, we may be spending some time preparing for God's plan.
Zachariah and Elizabeth continued to live and pray to God in good faith, despite the pain of not being able to fulfil their wishes. Finally, there was a message from God, and even when things started, they quietly turned to God and pondered on what God had done.
Moreover, the period of preparation that Zachariah and Elizabeth had spent was not just for them, but for the young Mary. The existence of Elizabeth, who has undergone such events, has been the support and encouragement of Mary more than anyone else.
God has a plan for the current generation and for us. Like Zachariah and Elizabeth, we should also spend time waiting and preparing for that time, looking forward to what God will do. I want us to remember the people who spent their time preparing for Christmas, and how they were overwhelmed with great joy at Christmas.
