新しく生まれること
ファリサイ派に属するニコデモという人がいました。彼はユダヤ人の議員でもありました。彼はイスラエルの神について人々に教え、神に従う生き方を指導し、またユダヤ社会の政治を主導していました。ニコデモはユダヤの人々の間で尊敬を勝ち取った人だったのでしょう。その尊敬は、規定を厳格に守り、熱心に教えを語る彼の努力のたまものでした。一方で、ファリサイ派の熱心さは人を分け隔てるものにもなっていました。
ニコデモはある夜、ひそかにイエスのもとを訪ねます。彼はその目的をはっきりとは語りませんが、「イエスは、何が人間の心の中にあるかをよく知っておられた」（2:25）のですから、彼が求めていることをご存じでした。そこでイエスはこう言われました。
「人は、新たに生まれなければ、神の国を見ることはできない。」（3:3）
ニコデモは神の国について、イエスから聞こうとしたのでしょう。ところが、彼はイエスの言葉に戸惑い、「年老いた自分が、もう一度母親の胎内に入って生まれることなどできません」、と当たり前のことを言います。彼は「生まれる」という言葉を出産のことと思ったのかもしれません。あるいは「新たに」ということがファリサイ派として努力してきたことを否定するように思えたために、受け入れがたかったのかもしれません。
イエスは戸惑うニコデモに続けてこう言いました。
「だれでも水と霊とによって生まれなければ、神の国に入ることはできない。
肉から生まれたものは肉である。霊から生まれたものは霊である。」（3:5-6）
新たに生まれるということは、霊から生まれることです。また、「新たに」というギリシア語‟ἄνωθεν”は「上から」という意味もあります。つまり、新たに生まれるというのは、天の神によって生まれること、神の霊によって新しくなることです。それは肉体の生まれ変わりではなく、神の思いに基づいて生まれ変わることです。
ニコデモはイエスのなされたしるしを見たり、語られた教えを聞いたりして、イエスが神に遣わされた方だとは思っていました。けれども、彼は自分の力で救いを勝ち取ることから自由になれず、その教えにつまずきました。イエスは人を分け隔てるような勝利や成功ではなく、それとは違う「新しく生まれること」を伝えたのです。
神の愛を見る
新しく生まれることは神の思いに基づいて生まれ変わることです。神の思いは3章16節に凝縮して表されています。
「神は、その独り子をお与えになったほどに、世を愛された。
独り子を信じる者が一人も滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。」（3:16）
ここには何の前提もありません。ファリサイ派の人たちが信じていたように、規定を守ることが評価の前提とされているのではありません。神が世を愛されること――この世に生まれ、生きるすべての人を愛すること――には何の前提もありません。神は私たちを愛しておられる。私のことを誰がどのように思っていようとも、いや、私自身が自分を愛することができなくても、神は私を愛しておられる。それは変わることのない真実です。
しかもその愛は、神の独り子であるイエス・キリストを与えるほどに深い愛です。イエスが与えられたところは、未だ罪にまみれている世であり、痛みや苦しみ、嘆き、寂しさの只中にイエスは遣わされました。イエスは痛みも苦しみも嘆きも寂しさも担い、それらを生み出す私たちの罪を負ったのです。そこまでなさるのは、神が独り子イエスと同じように、この世に生きる私たちを愛しているからです。罪の只中にいる私たちが神の子であるかのように愛され、そして実際、神の子とされる。それが神の思いです。
一人も滅びないように、とありますが、滅びとは神の前から失われることです。神とのつながりが絶たれ、神を見ることも、神の国を見ることもできないことが滅びです。神は誰一人として、ご自身の前から失いたくないのです。たった一人であっても、神の愛を知らずにいてほしくないのです。その愛を伝えるために、イエス・キリストがこの世に来られ、今、私たちにも伝えられています。
神の国とは、神が支配していることです。神の支配は愛と赦しに基づきます。神の国に入るのは、神に愛されていること、赦されていることを知るときです。神の国を見るとは、私たちを愛する神を見、私たちを赦し招く神を見るということです。
人は、新たに生まれなければ、神の国を見ることはできない、とイエスは言われました。神の国を見ることができないならば、人は何を見ているのでしょうか。それは神なき世の中、愛と赦しのない世界です。無条件の愛を知らず、赦すことも、赦されることもない世界です。
もう一度、確認しますが、新たに生まれるということは、霊から生まれることであり、上から――つまり天の神によって生まれることです。ここで自分の努力が大事だとか、愛が足りないとか反省しても、それは新たに生まれることにはなりません。なぜなら、それは神ではなく、神の国でもなく、自分自身を見ることだからです。
神は私を愛してくださった。独り子と同じように私を愛し、私が神のもとから一時も失われないように、神の愛から目を離さないように、イエスを遣わしてくださった。他でもない神が、ありのままの私を赦し、どこまでも愛してくださる。これまでも、今も、これからも、私を愛し続けてくださる。新しく生まれるためには、この神から目を離してはなりません。
神の国という新しい舞台
愛と赦しのない世界は、闇に覆われています。もしかしたらあのニコデモも、心のどこかで愛と赦しを求めて、イエスのもとに来たのかもしれません。闇の中で、愛と赦しは光のように輝き、人を照らします。
主イエスは「人間を照らす光」（1:4）として世に来られました。主イエスの生き方が、その御業が、その御言葉が、暗闇の中で輝いている光です。けれども、困ったことに人は光を好むとは限りません。光を求めながらも、光を拒否し、闇の方を好んでしまうことがあります。
イエスは光ですから、近づけば近づくほど、闇に隠されていたものが露わになります。それは自分の心であり、これまでの生き方です。愛の足りない私。愛を行うことができない私。赦すことができず、赦されることもできずに不満や文句を募らせる私。何よりも自分自身を愛せず、自分自身を赦せない私。そんな私は、闇の中に自分自身を隠そうとしてしまいます。
イエスを見れば、私たちの行いが明るみに出されます。イエスは私たちの心の内もご存じです。でも、イエスが私たちを遠ざけることはありません。私たちがイエスから遠ざかってしまうのです。それはイエスの示す愛と赦しを望まないからでしょうか。あるいは愛と赦しを自分だけで生み出さないといけないと思い込んでいるからでしょうか。
私たちは光に向かう者でありましょう。それは真理を行う者であると言われています。真理を行う者とは、いつも完璧で、愛に満ち溢れ、すべてを赦し、過ちのない人に自らなる人のことではありません。それはファリサイ派のニコデモが目指したものでした。真理を行い、光に向かうのは、神によって新たにされた者、神が愛であることを知り、神の赦しに身をゆだね、その愛と赦しの中で生かされる者です。自分自身を見る前に神を見て、神に愛され、赦された者として新たに生きるように変えられた者のことです。
神の国は、神が私たちのために用意された新しい舞台です。そこでは私たちも、すべての人も、神に愛され、赦された者であるということが前提になります。神の愛と赦しには何の分け隔てもありません。この世で――私たちの遣わされたそれぞれの場で、神の国を見、愛され、赦された者として生きるならば、私たちはイエス・キリストによって作られた新しい舞台に立つことになるのです。そこから見える景色はどのようなものでしょうか。何度でも、そこに立ち返り、イエスの光に照らされて生きていきましょう。

"Standing on a new stage"

To be born again
There was a person named Nicodemus who was a Pharisee. He was also a Jewish legislator. He taught people about the God of Israel, taught them how to live a life obeying God, and led the politics of Jewish society. Nicodemus would have been one of those who receives respect among the Jewish people. That respect was the result of his efforts to strictly adhere to the rules and diligently teach others. On the other hand, the Pharisees' enthusiasm was also what separated people.
Nicodemus secretly visited Jesus one night. He did not say what he wants, but Jesus knew the hearts of men as in John 2:25, "for he knew what was in each person." To that Jesus said:
"Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." (3:3)
Nicodemus probably wanted to ask Jesus about the kingdom of God. However, he was confused by the words of Jesus and said, "How can someone be born again when they are old? Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!" He may have thought of the word "born" as giving birth, or perhaps it was because the "new" denies all the efforts that the Pharisees made, so it might have been unacceptable to him.
As Nicodemus was confused, Jesus said:
“No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and Spirit.
Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” (3:5-6)
To be born again is to be born from the Spirit. In addition, the Greek word “ἄνωθεν” which means “newly” also means “from above”. In other words, being born again means being born by the God of heaven, being changed anew by the spirit of God. It is not the reincarnation of the physical body, but the reincarnation according to God’s will.
Nicodemus thought that Jesus was sent by God after seeing the signs of Jesus and listening to the teachings that were told. However, he was unable to set himself free to receive salvation and stumbled upon receiving Jesus’ teachings. Jesus was one that separates people based on their victories or success, but one that teaches something different, a "new birth".
Seeing the love of God
To be born again is to be changed according to God’s will. God's thoughts are condensed and expressed in 3:16.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (3:16)
There are no prerequisites here. Adherence to regulations, in which the Pharisees lived by, is not a prerequisite for evaluation. There is no requirement for God to love the world, to love all who are born and live in this world. God loves us. No matter how others thinks of me or even if I can’t love myself, God still loves me. That is the unchanging truth.
Moreover, God’s love is so deep that Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, was given to us. Where Jesus was sent to us while the world was still sinful, and He was sent in the midst of pain, suffering, mourning and loneliness. Jesus bears our pain, our suffering, our grief, our loneliness, and our sins that produce them. That is because God, like Jesus, loves us. It is while we are sinning, we are loved as if we were children of God, and truly accepted by God as his children. That is God’s desire.
It is said that no one will perish, but perishing means disappearing before God. To perish is to lose the connection we have with God and to be unable to see God nor the kingdom of God. God does not want even a single person to perish. God does not want even one person to be unaware of his love. Jesus Christ came to this world to convey that love, and now it is also passed on to us.
The kingdom of God is a kingdom that God rules. God's rule is based on love and forgiveness. Entering the kingdom of God is when you know that you are loved and forgiven by God. Seeing the kingdom of God means seeing the God who loves us and the God who forgives us.
Jesus said that a person cannot see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. If we cannot see the kingdom of God, what are we looking at? It is a world without love and forgiveness and without God. It is a world in which you cannot be forgiven or forgiven without knowing unconditional love.
Again, confirming that being born again means being born from the spirit, from above which is being born by the God of Heaven. Even if you reflect on your efforts or lack of love, it does not mean that you will be born again. Because you are not looking upon God nor the Kingdom of God, but upon yourself.
God loved me. He loved me as if I was the only Begotten Son and sent Jesus to keep me in the love of God so that I would never be lost from him. No other God forgives me as I am and loves me forever. He has always loved me, now and always. To be born again, we cannot take our eyes away from God.
A new stage called the kingdom of God
A world without love and forgiveness is covered with darkness. Perhaps that Nicodemus also came to Jesus, seeking love and forgiveness somewhere in his heart. In the darkness, love and forgiveness shine like light and illuminate people.
The Lord Jesus came to the world as "the light that illuminates humans" (1:4). The way of life of the Lord Jesus is the word, and the word is the light shining in the darkness. Unfortunately, people don't always like light. Sometimes you want light, but sometimes you reject it and prefer darkness.
Jesus is light, so the closer it gets, the more the things hidden in the darkness will be revealed. It is in our heart and our way of life. One that is lacking in love. One that can’t love. One that can't forgive, and one who could not be forgiven. Above all, one who can't love himself and forgive himself. We try to hide ourselves in the darkness.
Our actions will be revealed as we look upon Jesus. Jesus knows our hearts. But Jesus does not keep us away. We are the ones that tend to move away from Jesus. Is it because we do not want the love and forgiveness that Jesus shows? Or maybe it is because of our way of thinking that we have to create love and forgiveness by ourselves?
We should be the ones going to the light. As that is seekers of truth do. The one who seeks the truth is not always the one who is perfect, full of love, forgiving everything, and who does not make mistakes. It was what the Pharisee Nicodemus wanted to achieve. The ones who seeks out the truth and go to the light are those who are reborn by God, who knows that God is love, and who commit themselves to God's forgiveness and who are saved in God’s love and forgiveness. A person who sees God before he sees himself and is transformed into a new life as a person who is loved and forgiven by God.
The Kingdom of God is a new stage that God has prepared for us. The prerequisite is that we and everyone are loved and forgiven by God. There is no distinction between God's love and forgiveness. In this world--in each of the places we are sent to, seeing the kingdom of God and living as someone who is loved and forgiven, we would be set on a new stage created by Jesus Christ. What would be the view from there? Let's return to it many times and live in the light of Jesus.
