先週は、私たちが様々なつながりの中で、助けられたり、助けたりしながら生きていること、神様がそのようなつながりを通して私たちを助け導いてくださっていることを考えました。私たちがつながっている人々を考えると、そこには多様性があることに気が付きます。体に多くの部分があっても、一つの体であるように、私たちに多様性があっても、キリストによって私たちは一つに結び合わされています。
多様なつながりから生まれるカラフルな選挙
先日まで、教会の２階の壁に選挙の候補者リストを貼っていました。何の選挙かというと、日本バプテスト連盟の新しい理事・監事・総会役員を選ぶための選挙です。今回から始めて事前に候補者の情報が知らされるようになり、教会から一票を投票するようになったので、少しでも分かち合いたいと思って張り出していました。
この新しい選挙は、「みんなで選ぶカラフルな選挙」としてPRがなされてきました。今までよりも色んな人が選ばれる選挙。みんなが推薦して、みんなが投票して、みんなが選ぶ選挙。私もこの新しい選挙作りに関わってきましたので、そんな選挙になっていってほしいと願っています。
選挙管理委員会が、投票を呼び掛けるＰＲ動画を作ってくださいました。投票期限は先週で終わってしまったのですが――金沢教会も投票しました――、せっかくなので一緒に見ていただきたいと思います。

みんなで選ぶカラフルな選挙。いよいよ投票期間に入りました。どの教会も投票できるのは一票。私たち連盟のこれからに関わる大切な一票です。教会でよく話し合って祈りをもって投票したいです。
今回、初めてのオンライン選挙ですが、これも機構改革のチャレンジの一つです。ぜひご協力ください。もちろん投票用紙でも大丈夫です。

それでは、みなさんの投票をお待ちしています。
連盟には沖縄から北海道まで全国に288の教会がありますが、この動画を見ても色んな教会があるのだなと思わされます。そしてそれぞれの教会にも、色んな人が集まっている。私たちの教会も、想像以上に多様な教会・多様な人たちとつながっていることに改めて気づかされます。そのつながりの中で様々な働きがなされ、私たちの教会も色んな助けや恵みをいただいてきたことにも、改めて感謝の思いを抱いています。
多様な教会
パウロは教会の中にある多様性を、人間の体にたとえています。そのようなたとえは、パウロの独創的なものではなく、古代社会ではよく用いられたたとえであったそうです。ただし、その意図するところは全く違っていました。
古代社会では、低い階級に属する人びとが、自分たちの置かれた階級に留まり、より上位の人々に反逆しないように促すために、社会を人間の体にたとえていました。つまり、体の中に上下関係があり、それは変えることができないものだから、自分の運命を甘んじて受けよ、というメッセージが送られていた、ということです。
体には多くの部分があり、それぞれの機能があるように、社会や教会にも多様な人がいて、それぞれの働きや賜物がある、と語ることは、パウロも同じです。ただし彼は、体の部分には上下関係はなく、人びとの間にも上下はない、と語ります。違いがあっても、誰もが尊重されるべきである、ということが、パウロが送ったメッセージでした。
体のそれぞれの部分は違う役割をもっています。だから、「足は手ではないと価値がない」、とは言えませんし、「耳は目ではないからなくてもいい」とも言えません。手でできることがたくさんあって便利であっても、足がないと歩けません。目の方が多くの情報を得ることができたとしても、目では音を聞くことはできません。
「そこで神は御自分の望みのままに、体に一つ一つの部分を置かれたのです。」
（コリントの信徒への手紙一12章18節）
体にさまざまな部分があるように、教会にも色んな人が集まり、つながっています。それは神が望んでおられることでした。
「神は、教会の中にいろいろな人をお立てになりました。」
（コリントの信徒への手紙一12章28節）
ここでパウロは教会の中で担われていた色々な働きを挙げています。これが全てではないでしょうし、私たちの教会での働きもこれとは違っています。いずれにしても、色々な働きがあり、色々な賜物を与えられた人がいる。それも神様が望んでおられたことです。
働きや賜物も、わかりやすいものや目立つものばかりではないでしょう。そこに一緒にいること、一緒に聖書を読み、祈ること、その中に表わされたそれぞれの賜物もあるのです。私たちはそれぞれ違っていて、それぞれの歴史をもち、それぞれの背景をもち、それぞれの視点を持っています。そこから生まれる賜物は必ずあります。神様は色んな人が教会につながっていることを良しとして、私たちをここに呼び集めてくださった。私たちの誰もが、神様に招かれ、喜ばれ、尊重されているのです。
一つにつながる
教会の中に色々な人がいるように、連盟の中にも色々な教会がいます。もちろんその中には一つの教会にいるよりももっと多様な人たちがいます。その多様性は、10名の理事を選ぶ選挙だけでは表しきれません。色々な教会の声が聞こえ、そこにつながっている人たちの思いや考えが響き合い、賜物が用いられるようになるかどうかは、来年度以降の宿題になっています。
そこで取り組もうとしていることの一つが、今まで以上に色んな人の声が聞こえる総会です。限られた人たちだけが話し合うのではなく、誰もが思っていることや考えていることを伝えることができる。もちろんそこで、誰かを傷つけたり、貶めたりするようなことを言わないようにすることは前提となります。安心して色んな考えや思いを出し合えることで、多様な視点を得られるようになるでしょう。
そしてそれが、色々な人・色々な教会がつながって、一つになっていくために必要なことだと思うのです。色々な人が一つにつながっていくことは、神様が望んでおられることです。その中で、多様な働きがなされ、多様な賜物が用いられ、神様からの豊かな恵みと祝福が与えられていくのです。
つながりが広がっていくとき、私たちの視野は広げられていきます。自分の考えや思いだけでなく、違った視点からの考えや思いがあること、そしてそれにも理由があることがわかってくる。すると、他の人に共感したり、思いやりをもったりするようになる。狭い視野で見ていては怒りや憎しみが湧くことも、視野が広がれば理解と共感をもつことができるようになる。そして、互いに歩み寄って、一つにつながることができる。
一緒に聖書を読むことは、そのための訓練になっているのかもしれません。聖書に登場する人物や、聖書を書き記した人たちの視点は私たちとは異なります。それを読む私たち一人一人の視点も異なります。だから当然、聖書を読み、思ったことを話し合えば、色んな考えや思いが出てくるのです。そしてそれらを通して私たちは神様の視点から見える世界を考えるのです。
視野を広げることは簡単にできるわけではありません。なかなか理解できなかったり、伝わらなかったりすることの方が多いかもしれません。そもそも互いを認め合い、理解し合おうとしていない場合もあります。誰かへの怒りや憎しみが治まらないこともあります。いつでもどこでもうまくいくとは限らない。それでも、誰かのことを今までよりもほんの少し理解できたり、共感できたりして、つながることができたなら、それはすばらしいことではないでしょうか。
人と人とのつながりも、教会と教会とのつながりも、お互いにとって助けと恵みを与えるものとなります。神様はそのようなつながりの中に働きかけてくださいます。イエス・キリストは私たちを互いにつなぎ合わせ、また神様ともつなぎ合わせてくださいます。時間のかかる道のりかもしれません。それでも、私たちが多様でありながら、キリストにおいて一つとなることができるように祈り続けたいと思います。それぞれが抱いている思いや考えを大切にしながら、神様から与えられた賜物を用いながら、時間をかけて、ゆっくりと、一つにつながることができるように歩んでまいりましょう。

"Many Parts But One Body"
Scripture reading is taken from 1 Corinthians 12:14-20
Last week, we reflected on how we live in various connections, helping and being helped, and how God helps and guides us through such connections. When we think about the people we are connected to, we realize that there is diversity out there. Just as the body has many parts but is one body, so too, despite our diversity, we are bound together as one through Christ.
Colorful Elections Born of Diverse Connections
Until the other day, I had posted a list of candidates for an election on the second floor wall of the church. What election? The election is to elect new directors, auditors, and general assembly officers of the Japan Baptist Convention (JBC). Starting this time, we were informed of the candidates in advance, and since the churches are now voting for one vote, we wanted to share some of the information with you.
This new election has been promoted as a "colorful election for everyone”. An election where more colorful people will be elected than ever before. An election where everyone nominates, everyone votes, and everyone chooses. I have been involved in the creation of this new election, and I hope that it will become such an election.
The Election Committee has made a PR video to encourage people to vote. The deadline for voting ended last week--Kanazawa Church also voted--but since we are here, I would like you to watch it with us.

A colorful election for everyone. The voting period has finally arrived. Every church has one vote to cast. It is an important vote for the future of our federation. I would like to vote prayerfully after careful discussion in the churches.

There are 288 churches in the federation, from Okinawa to Hokkaido, and this video reminds us that there are many different kinds of churches in Japan. And each church has people from all walks of life. We are reminded once again that our churches are connected to more diverse churches and people than we can imagine. I am grateful again for the many ways in which our churches have received help and blessings from these connections.
Diverse Churches
Paul compares the diversity in the church to the human body. Such a metaphor is not original to Paul, but was a common one used in ancient societies. However, the intent was quite different.
In ancient society, society was compared to the human body in order to encourage people belonging to lower classes to stay within their own ranks and not rebel against those of higher ranks. In other words, the message was sent that there was a hierarchy within the body that could not be changed, and that one should accept one's destiny with open arms.
Just as the body has many parts, each with its own function, so Paul is the same in saying that society and the church have diverse people, each with their own functions and gifts. However, he says that there is no hierarchy among the parts of the body, and there is no hierarchy among people either. Paul's message was that everyone should be respected despite their differences.
Each part of the body has a different role. Therefore, we cannot say, "A foot is worthless unless it is a hand," nor can we say, "An ear is worthless because it is not an eye. Even though there are many things we can do with our hands that are useful, we cannot walk without our feet. Even though our eyes can obtain more information, we cannot hear sounds with our eyes.
“[I]n fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.” (1 Corinthians 12:18)
Just as there are different parts to the body, so there are different people gathered and connected in the church. That is what God wanted.
“And God has placed in the church(AG) first of all apostles,second prophets,…”(1 Corinthians 12:28)
Here Paul lists the various ministries that were carried out in the church. This may not be all of them, and the work in our churches is different from this. In any case, there are various ministries and people who were given various gifts. That is also what God wanted.
The ministries and gifts may not all be obvious or prominent. There are also the gifts of being together, reading the Bible and praying together, and the gifts of each person expressed in that. We are all different, we all have our own histories, our own backgrounds, and our own perspectives. There is always a gift that comes from that. God has called us here because He sees the goodness in having so many different people connected to the church. Every one of us is invited, appreciated, and respected by God.
Connected as One
Just as there are many different people in the church, there are many different churches in the convention. Of course, there are more diverse people in that group than there are in one church. That diversity cannot be represented by the election of 10 board members alone. Whether the voices of the various churches can be heard, the thoughts and ideas of those connected to them can resonate, and their gifts can be used, is a homework assignment for the next year and beyond.
One of the things we are trying to work on there is a general meeting where more voices of various people can be heard than ever before. Instead of only a limited number of people discussing, everyone can communicate what they are thinking. Of course, it is a prerequisite that we do not say anything there that could hurt or undermine anyone. By being able to safely express various thoughts and ideas to each other, we will be able to gain diverse perspectives.
And I think this is what is necessary for various people and various churches to connect and become one. God wants us to connect various people as one. In this context, various works will be done, various gifts will be used, and abundant blessings and blessings from God will be given.
As our connections expand, our perspectives are broadened. We come to realize that there are not only our own thoughts and feelings, but also those from different perspectives and that there are reasons for them. Then we begin to have empathy and compassion for others. When we look at things from a narrow perspective, we may feel anger or hatred, but when we broaden our perspective, we can understand and sympathize with others. And we can come closer to one another and connect as one.
Reading the Bible together may be a training for this. The characters in the Bible and the people who wrote it down have different perspectives from ours. Each of us who reads it also has a different perspective. So naturally, when we read the Bible and talk about what we think, many thoughts and feelings come up. And through them, we think about the world as seen from God's point of view.
It is not always easy to broaden our perspective. It may be more difficult to understand or communicate. We may not even recognize and try to understand each other in the first place. We may have anger or hatred toward someone that won't go away. It may not always work out. Still, it would be wonderful if we could connect with someone with just a little more understanding or empathy than before.
Both person-to-person and church-to-church connections can be a source of help and grace to each other. God works in such connections. Jesus Christ connects us to each other and to God. It may be a slow process. Nevertheless, I will continue to pray that we may be diverse and yet united in Christ. Let us walk together as one, slowly, over time, using the gifts God has given us, while respecting the thoughts and ideas that each of us holds.
