今月は「平和を祈る礼拝」をささげてきました。今日はその最終日となりますが、平和ということについて、また平和を創り出す神さまについて、中村哲さんの語られたことや、出会われたことから考えたいと思います。神さまはどのように私たちといつも共にいてくださるのでしょうか。神さまが創り出す「新しい天と新しい地」はどのようなものなのでしょうか。
予想外の出来事の中で
小学生の頃の中村哲さんは虫取りに夢中になり、昆虫を探して山を駆け回る日々を送っていました。将来は昆虫の研究をしたい、という夢がありましたが、親に納得してもらえる医学部へ進学し、医者として働き始めました。中村さんがアフガニスタンに行くことを決めた動機の一つは、アフガニスタンの山脈に貴重な昆虫たち――中でもパルナシウスというアゲハチョウの仲間――がいることだったそうです。子どものころからいくつもの出会いがあって、中村さんはアフガニスタンへと導かれていきました。
出会いというのは不思議なものです。出会いは自分で選んだり、用意したりすることができるわけではありません。それでも、私たちには色んな人との出会いや、出来事との出会い、そして何より神さまとの出会いが与えられています。その出会いの中で、今の自分が作られ、今、この場所にいるわけです。私にもいくつもの出会いがあったからこそ、牧師になりましたし、金沢教会へと導かれてきました。
出会った先で、私たちが向き合わされることも、自分の予想とは違っていることがあります。中村さんは医者として病気の治療をするために、アフガニスタンやパキスタンへ行きました。初めのころは専門医が足りていなかったハンセン病の診療にあたったり、医師のいない山岳地帯に診療所を開設したりする働きをしておられました。
ところが2000年に、アフガニスタンを未曽有の大干ばつが襲いました。人口の半数以上の人が干ばつの影響を受け、100万人以上が餓死しかねない危険な状況に陥りました。農地は沙漠化し、家畜の90％が死に、村を捨てて避難せざるを得ない農民が次々と出て来ました。中村さんの診療所を尋ねる人の病気のほとんどは、水と食料さえあれば防げるものとなりました。アフガン人医師の意見も受けて、中村さんは現地の人たちと共に、井戸を掘りなおす働きを始めました。
さらに水を取り戻し、農村を回復させるために、全長25キロメートルにもなる用水路の建設も始めました。それは試行錯誤の連続で、洪水が起こったり、妨害にあったりと、挙げればきりがないほどのトラブルに見舞われました。いくつもの困難と、現地と日本の多くの人の協力のもとで、2009年8月3日、ついに用水路が開通しました。
水が初めて水路を流れ、最後の水門を通過した時の様子を、中村さんはこのように記しています。
「水を先導するように幅６メートルの水路を歩いていくと、すでに施工を終えた作業員たち400名が両岸に並び、固唾をのんで見守っている。……かっきりと正午、水は水門を通過、予定地点へと勢いよく流れた。全線開通だ。
『神は偉大なり！』
期せずして歓声と拍手が起こり、真っ黒に日焼けしたひげ面の男たちが笑みを浮かべて立ちすくむ。現場は興奮の渦に投げ込まれた。足かけ７年にわたる汗の結晶だ。用水路が3000ヘクタール（町歩）の農地を回復した上、広大なガンベリ沙漠の開拓を約束した瞬間であった。」（中村哲『天、共に在り』P.10より）
苦しみは去り、喜びが創造される
この瞬間のアフガニスタン作業員の思いを想像してみました。彼らが直面していたのは、命を脅かす広大な沙漠、繰り返される干ばつによって死にゆく大地、生きる術を奪われ、故郷を捨てざるを得なかった人たち、あるいは過酷な環境に身を置き続け、絶望と向き合わされる人たち。彼らにとって、水とはまさに命を与えるものだったでしょう。死の大地であった広大な砂漠に、命の水が流れていった。それは彼らにどれほどの希望と勇気を与えるものだったでしょうか。
用水路が通った地域では、茶色い砂漠が緑の大地へと変わっていきました。消えていた村が復活し、故郷を離れていた人々も安心して帰ってくることができました。中村さんは、このような砂漠に囲まれた緑の人里を眺めながら、「天、共に在り」という実感と安堵感を覚えたといいます。神さまが私たちと共におられる。この光景が、「絶望的な世とは無関係に、与えられた豊かな恵みが在ることを知らせる」のです。
神さまは預言者イザヤを通して、このようにおっしゃいました。
「見よ、わたしは新しい天と新しい地を創造する。」（イザヤ書65章17節）
これが神さまの変わらない決意であり、変わらない思いです。そして中村さんとアフガニスタンの人々が共に見たこのことは、新しい天と新しい地を創造する神の業だったのです。だからこそ、人々は「神は偉大なり！」という歓声をあげたのでしょう。
私たちにはこの世で苦難があります。それはアフガニスタンの人々を襲ったものとは異なるかもしれませんが、私たちにとっては十分すぎるほどに重く、苦しいものだったでしょう。神さまは、私たちがそれぞれに負っている苦難を知っておられます。ただ知っているだけでなく、私たちの苦難を御自分の苦難としてくださいました。
「主は言われた／彼らはわたしの民、偽りのない子らである、と。そして主は彼らの救い主となられた。彼らの苦難を常に御自分の苦難とし／御前に仕える御使いによって彼らを救い／愛と憐れみをもって彼らを贖い／昔から常に／彼らを負い、彼らを担ってくださった。」（イザヤ書63章8~9節）
神さまはこう言いました。「あなたはわたしの民、確かにあなたはわたしの子です」、と。私たちを神の子と呼んでくださる主は、私たちの救い主となられました。私たちの苦難を、常に御自分の苦難として、その苦難から愛と憐れみをもって贖い出してくださった。昔からずっと、いつも・どんなときも、私たちを負い、苦難と共に私たちを担ってくださった。神さまはそのようにして、いつも私たちと共にいてくださったのです。
神さまはすべての造られた者のために、「新しい天と新しい地を創造する」ことを決意しておられます。そこでは現在の苦しみと悲しみ――泣く声と叫ぶ声は、もはや響くことがありません。「代々とこしえに喜び楽しみ、喜び踊れ」（イザヤ書65章18節）。神さまは私たちを、喜び踊り、喜び楽しむ者として新たに創造してくださるのです。
平和への祈りが聞かれる
神さまが創造される新しい天と新しい地は平和です。そこでは誰もが祝福されています。それはとても具体的に起こることであり、私たちが生きている現在にも関わることです。
20節以下に、その具体的な姿が語られています。誰もが天寿を全うし、命を脅かされることはありません。誰もが家を建て、安心して眠ることができます。作物を植え、育て、その実りによって生きることができます。自分が働いて得た作物を、他の誰かに奪われたり、搾取されたりすることはなく、無駄に苦労することもありません。子どもの命が脅かされることもなく、子孫も繁栄することができるのです。
「ほとんどの農民たちの願いは、ただ三度の食事と故郷の平和だけであった」、と中村さんは語っています。神さまが創造される新しい天と新しい地の姿は、アフガニスタンの農民たちの願いとも重なりますし、私たちの心にある共通の祈りでもあるのではないでしょうか。
神さまは私たちのことも、全ての人のことも祝福なさいます。私たちは神さまのこのような祝福を祈り願っていました。神さまの創造は、祈りが聞かれた結果です。私たちの心の思いを知っていてくださる神さまは、私たちが呼びかけるより先に答え、語りかけている間に聞き届けてくださいます。
さらに25節では、人と人との関係に留まらず、動物たちも共存・共生し、もはや誰も・何ものも害することも滅ぼすこともないことが語られています。世の終わりに完成する神さまの創造は、このような世界――人と人とが和解し、かつ人と自然も和解して、平和になった世界です。この平和に向かって、神さまは今日も、明日も、これからも、私たちと共におられます。私たちの苦難を担い、喜び楽しむ者へと新たに創造し、平和への祈りを聞き届けてくださるのです。

"Peace with Other People, Peace with Nature"
Scripture reading is taken from Isaiah 65:17-25
This month, we have been holding "Prayer Services for Peace". Today is the last day of the series, and we would like to think about peace and the God who creates peace, based on Tetsu Nakamura’s experiences. How is God always with us? What is the "new heaven and new earth" that God creates?
In the Midst of Unexpected Events
As an elementary school student, Tetsu Nakamura was fascinated by bug catching and spent his days running around the mountains looking for insects. His dream was to study insects in the future, but he chose to go to the medical school that his parents chose. After graduating from medical school, he began working as a doctor. One of the motivations for Mr. Nakamura's decision to go to Afghanistan was the presence of interesting insects in the mountains of Afghanistan, like the Parnassius, a species of swallowtail butterfly.
Various encounters from his childhood led Mr. Nakamura to Afghanistan. Encounters are mysterious things. We cannot choose or prepare for encounters by ourselves. Nevertheless, we are given encounters with people, events, and above all, with God. It is through these encounters that we are formed into what we are today, and that is why we are here today. It is because of these encounters that I became a pastor and was led to Kanazawa Church.
Sometimes what we experience in our encounters is different from what we expected. Mr. Nakamura went to Afghanistan and Pakistan to treat diseases as a doctor. At first, he treated leprosy, for which there were not enough specialists, and helped establish clinics in mountainous areas where there were no doctors.
In 2000, however, Afghanistan was hit by an unprecedented drought. More than half of the population was affected by the drought and more than one million people were in danger of starving to death. Farmlands were deserted and 90% of the livestock died. Farmers were forced to abandon their villages and evacuate, one after another. Most of the illnesses of those who visited Nakamura's clinic could have been prevented if only water and food had been available. In response to an Afghan doctor's advice, Mr. Nakamura began working with local people to dig wells.
They also began constructing a 25-kilometer-long irrigation canal to bring transport water and restore rural communities. It was a process of trial and error, flooding, obstructions, and other problems too numerous to mention. After struggling with many difficulties, the canal was finally opened on August 3, 2009, with the cooperation of many local and Japanese people.
Mr. Nakamura describes how the water flowed through the canal for the first time and passed through the last sluice gate as follows:
"When I walked through the 6-meter-wide channel as if I were leading the water, 400 workers who had already finished the construction lined both banks and watched expectantly....... At noon, the water passed through the sluice gate and flowed swiftly to the village. The whole line is open.
‘God is great!’
Unexpected cheers and applause erupted, and the tanned, bearded men stood with smiles on their faces. The scene was filled with excitement. It was the culmination of seven years of sweat. It was the moment when the irrigation channel restored 3,000 hectares of farmland and promised to open up the vast Gambelli Desert. Suffering is Gone, Joy is Created
I tried to imagine the thoughts of the Afghan workers at that moment. They were facing a vast life-threatening desert, a land dying from repeated droughts. People had been deprived of the means to survive and forced to abandon their homeland. And people who continued to live in a harsh environment were forced to confront their despair. For them, water must have been the very thing that gave them life. The water of life flowed through the vast desert that had been a land of death. How much hope and courage did that give them?
In the areas where the canals were built, the brown desert was transformed into green land. Villages that had disappeared were restored, and people who had been displaced from their homes were able to return home with peace of mind. Mr. Nakamura said that, as he gazed at these green villages surrounded by desert, he felt a sense of relief and a realization that "Heaven is with us. God is with us.” He added that what the villagers saw let them know that there is an abundance of grace given to us, regardless of the hopelessness of the world.
God said through the prophet Isaiah as follows:
“See, I will create new heavens and a new earth." (Isaiah 65:17)
This is God's unchanging plan and unchanging desire. And what Mr. Nakamura and the people of Afghanistan saw together was God's work of creating a new heaven and a new earth. That is why they shouted with joy, "God is great!”
Hardships are everywhere in this world. It may not be the same as what hit the people of Afghanistan, but for us they are heavy and painful enough. God knows the hardships each of us bear. Not only does He know, but He has made our tribulations His tribulations.
He said, “Surely they are my people,
children who will be true to me”;
and so he became their Savior.
In all their distress he too was distressed,
and the angel of his presence saved them.
In his love and mercy he redeemed them;
he lifted them up and carried them
all the days of old. (Isaiah 63:8-9)
God said that we are his people, indeed we are his children. The Lord who calls us children of God has become our Savior. He always takes our pain as His own affliction and redeemed us with love and mercy. He always and forever bears our burdens and carries us in our sufferings. In this way, God has always been with us.
God is determined to create a new heaven and a new earth for all creation. In this new world, the present suffering and sorrow--the crying and the cries--will no longer be heard. God has promised us to "be glad and rejoice forever" (65:18). God creates us anew as people who dance and rejoice.
Prayers for Peace
The new heaven and earth that God creates are peaceful. Everyone is blessed there. It is a very concrete thing that will happen, and it concerns the present time in which we are living.
In verse 20 and following, we are given a concrete picture of this new world. Everyone will live a full life and will not have their lives threatened. Everyone can build a house and sleep in peace. We can plant crops, grow them, and live by their fruits. No one is deprived or exploited by others of the crops they have worked for, and they do not suffer needlessly. The lives of their children will not be threatened, and their offspring will flourish.
Nakamura said that what most farmers wanted was three meals a day and peace in their homeland. The new heaven and new earth that God is creating overlaps with the wishes of the Afghan farmers, and I believe it is a common prayer in our hearts as well.
God blesses us Christians and all the people of the earth. We have prayed and hoped for such blessings and God's creation is the result of our prayers. God, who knows the thoughts of our hearts, answers before we call out to him and hears us while we are speaking to him.
Furthermore, verse 25 says that not only people but also animals will coexist and live together, and that no one or anything will harm or destroy them anymore. God's creation will be completed at the end of the world, when people are reconciled, and nature is at peace. For this peace, God is with us today, tomorrow, and forever. He bears our hardships, creates us anew to rejoice and enjoy, and hears our prayers for peace.
