闇の中で、主はすぐ近くにおられる
今月３日の礼拝後に行った定期総会で、今年度の金沢教会の主題と主題聖句が選ばれました。主題は「主の恵みによる平和」。主題聖句はフィリピの信徒への手紙４章６節から７節です。今年度、この主題に目を向け、この御言葉を聞きながら共に歩んでいきます。
この主題を提案してくださった方は、その理由を、「コロナ禍、ロシアのウクライナ侵攻など先の見えない混沌としたこの時代に、主の恵みによる平和がもたらされることを願うため」、と書いてくださいました。新型コロナウイルスのパンデミックは私たちの日常を大きく変えてしまいました。連日報道されるロシア軍による軍事侵攻とその被害状況は、平和が失われていることを実感させます。
２年前に、今のような世界を想像できた人はいなかったでしょう。私たちは今、先の見えない混沌とした時代を生きています。急激な変化はコロナだけでなく、デジタル技術の進歩によってももたらされていて、オンラインでの礼拝参加や、オンラインでの合同礼拝も行えるようになりました。変化には良い面もあるのですが、その変化についていくのも大変です。
変化は急激であるだけでなく、予測も困難です。技術的な変化でもそうですが、気候変動などの環境変化も大きくなっていて、異常気象が日常的な出来事になりました。10年後どころか3年後、いや1年後でさえも予想外のことが起こっているかもしれません。そのことも私たちを不安にさせます。
この中で起こる問題は、とても複雑になっていて、簡単には解決できなくなっています。ミャンマーでのクーデターも、ロシアのウクライナ侵攻も、関係している事柄がとても複雑になっていて、簡単には解決できません。情報は日々、溢れるほどに届いてきますが、その中から正しいものを選び取ることも難しくなっています。
だからこそ、今の時代は混沌としているのでしょう。先が見えず、予測ができず、複雑な問題を解決する糸口も見えない。そんな混沌とした闇が、私たちから光を奪っているように思えるのです。そのようなところで、私たちは主の恵みによる平和を祈り求めています。
主はどこにおられるのか。混沌とした闇の中で、私たちは主の姿を見失ってしまうかもしれません。けれども主はその闇の只中におられます。主イエス・キリストはこの闇の只中に降ってこられ、最も小さくされた人と共に生き、そこから光を輝かせます。その光は、闇の中で痛み、苦しみ、悲しむ人々、恐れ、不安を感じ、迷う人々を照らし、神の平和に向けて立ち上がらせます。
この手紙の著者パウロは、「主はすぐ近くにおられます」と語りました。パウロが考えていたような「再臨」は起こりませんでしたが、確かに主はすぐ近くにおられました。そのことが私たちを照らし、喜びを与える光となります。主がすぐ近くにおられ、私たちを守り、小さくされた人々を救い、神の平和を作り出そうとしておられるのです。
思い煩うのはやめなさい
主がすぐ近くにおられる、ということを経験していたパウロは、「どんなことでも、思い煩うのはやめなさい」、と言うことができました（フィリピの信徒への手紙6章6節）。「思い煩う」というのは、日本語の意味では「いろいろと考えて苦しみ悩む」ことです。それは混沌とした闇の中で私たちが抱く思いそのものと言えるかもしれません。
パウロが「思い煩うのはやめなさい」と言うとき、それは色々なことを諦めて、考えることは止めてしまうことを勧めているのではありません。問われていることは、私たちが思い悩むとき、私たちは誰を頼りにしているのか、ということです。思い悩むのは、神に信頼しきれないからではないか。自分の能力を頼りにして、自分の運命は自らの力で切り開き、確かな将来を手に収めようとしている。そのときには、私たちは神よりも自分を頼りにしているのです。
そのように考えるのも、今の時代には珍しくないことかもしれません。今の社会では、誰かに頼ることがどんどん難しくなり、社会の助けや周り人の助けを求めるよりも先に自分で自分を助けなければならない、と言われることがあります。自分のことはすべて自分で責任を取らなければならない、それはまず自分自身を頼りとしなければならないということでもありますが、そう言われることで、私たちは自分以外の誰かに――たとえそれが神であっても――頼ることが難しくなっています。
「思い煩うのはやめなさい」、とパウロが言う時、それは自分だけを頼りにすることを止めることです。それは神が守ってくださり、配慮してくださることに信頼することです。確かにこの世は混沌としている。それでも神はこの世を治めておられ、一人ひとりを愛し、その場に降り、守り導こうとしてくださる、ということを信じ、神に委ねるのです。
それは主イエスが貫いた姿勢でした。イエスはゲッセマネの祈りで苦しみもがいていましたが、最終的に自分ではなく神に委ねました。
「父よ、御心なら、この杯をわたしから取りのけてください。しかし、わたしの願いではなく、御心のままに行ってください。」（ルカによる福音書22章42節）
闇の中で、私たちは必死に考えます。色々と考えて苦しみ悩みます。けれどもそこで、全部自分で負うことを辞め、神がなさろうとすることに信頼し、神の導きに委ねていく。そのことをパウロは勧めたのでしょう。
人知を超える神への祈り
続けてパウロは、「何事につけ、感謝を込めて祈りと願いをささげ、求めているものを神に打ち明けなさい」と告げました。求めていることは、何でも神に打ち明けなさい、と彼は言うのです。私たちは何でも祈ることができる。いやむしろ、どんなことでも神に祈ることが求められていると言ってもいいでしょう。
ただしそれは、神が何でも私の願いを叶えてくれる、ということではありません。神に祈れば何でも思い通りになるということではないのです。そのような期待は、結局、官に頼っているのではなく、神を利用しながら自分自身に頼っているだけです。
実際のところ、私たちの考えている通りになることが良い結果をもたらすとも限りません。私たちは混沌とした闇の中にいて、先が見えずにいます。それどころか、今、このときのこともよく見えません。そんな私たちの考えは、自分にとっては最善のことのように思えますが、案外、良い結果に繋がらないこともあるでしょう。
だから私たちはイエスと共に、「しかし、わたしの願いではなく、御心のままに行ってください」と祈るのです。私は私なりに必死に考え、一生懸命生きている。それでも、私の願い通りにすべてが進むことが、必ずしも良い結果をもたらさない。だから私たちは、最善をご存じの方を信頼し、委ねるのです。
神が作り出そうとしておられるのは、「あらゆる人知を超える神の平和」です。人知、つまり私たちの色々な考えを超えて、神の平和が作られることを信じ求めながら、私たちは神に祈るのです。人知を超えるというのは、知識の量とか、頭のよさとか、そういうことではありません。私たちが思い煩いながら想像することを遥かに超えて、神は新しい世界を創造される、ということです。
どんなことでも神に祈り願うのは、一部分だけを神に委ねるのではなく、この世を治め、全ての人を配慮される神に、全ての祈りと願いを――その先の将来を――委ねるためです。私たちの想いを超えて、神は正しく配慮してくださる。私たちが答えを見つけたからではなく、神が先立って新しい世界に導こうとしてくださっている。そのことを知ったとき、私たちは感謝を込めて祈るでしょう。
神の救いの力
私たちが神に信頼し、すべてを委ねたならば、「あらゆる人知を超える神の平和が、あなたがたの心と考えとをキリスト・イエスにあって守るでしょう」、とパウロは保証しました（フィリピの信徒への手紙4章7節）。神の平和があなたがたを守る。
その「平和」は、ギリシア語で“エイレーネー”という言葉であり、ヘブライ語の“シャローム”と関連付けられた言葉です。その平和は、心の安らぎや、思い煩いがない状態だけには限定されていません。神の平和とは、心の中の平和のことではありません。
平和とは、「救い」と同じ意味で使われます。つまり、「神の平和」は、神がもたらす救いを意味しているのです。平和というと、穏やかで、波風の立たない状態を思い浮かべますが、神の平和はもっと積極的で、もっと活動的で、もっと勢いのあるものです。神の平和は、この世で混沌とした闇を作り出しているものを打ち破り、壊された関係を創り直し、神が良しとされた世界を取り戻す救いの力を指しています。
そのような神の平和が――神の救いの力が――あなたがたをキリスト・イエスにあって守るでしょう。先の見えない混沌とした時代の中であっても、イエスはその只中に降り、すぐ近くにおられます。闇の中で負わされた痛みも、苦しみも、悲しみも、そのすべてを共に担い、受け止めておられます。
そこから抜け出す方法もわからず、闇を照らす光も見失っていても、神は私たちの考えを遥かに超えて世界を新しく創造し、壊れたものを作り直し、失われたものを取り戻そうとしておられます。神は闇の中に光を照らし、今、苦しみ、痛み、悲しむ人を先頭に、私たちも、全ての人もそこから救い出してくださいます。
その救いの力が私たちを守ってくださいます。苦しみ、痛み、悲しみを防ぎ、それに耐えられるように支え、慰めを与えて再び立ち上がらせてくださいます。混沌とした闇の力に捕らわれ、神の平和を壊していたならば、その鎖を解き放ち、進む方向を変えさせて、神に従う者となるように招いてくださいます。この主の恵みを受け取って、この一年を歩んでまいりましょう。

"Peace Through the Grace of the Lord"
Scripture reading is taken from Philippians 4:6-7
In the Midst of Darkness, the Lord Is Near
At the regular general meeting held after the service on the third of this month, we chose the church's theme and theme verses for this year. The theme is "Peace Through the Grace of the Lord." The theme verses are Philippians 4:6-7. This year, we will turn our attention to this theme and walk together as we have these verses in mind.
The person who suggested this theme wrote that the reason for the theme was "to hope that the Lord's grace will bring peace in this chaotic era when the future is uncertain, due to the corona disaster and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The coronavirus pandemic has drastically changed our lives. The daily reports of the Russian military invasion and the damage caused by the invasion make us realize that peace has been lost.
Two years ago, no one could have imagined the world as it is today. We are now living in chaotic times with an uncertain future. Rapid change has been brought about not only by corona, but also by advances in digital technology, which now allow us to participate in worship online and even hold joint services online. While change has its positive aspects, it is also hard to keep up.
Not only is the change rapid, but it is also difficult to predict. As with technological change, environmental changes such as climate change have become so great that extreme weather events have become commonplace. This also is disturbing.
The problems that arise in this context have become so complicated that they cannot be easily resolved. Whether the problem is the coup in Myanmar or Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the issues involved in each problem have become so complicated that they cannot be easily resolved. We receive so much information every day, but it is becoming increasingly difficult to know what is true.
That is why our current era is so chaotic. We cannot see the future, we cannot make predictions, and we cannot find clues for how to solve these complex problems. Such chaos and darkness are depriving us of light. Therefore, we pray and ask for peace through the Lord's grace.
Where is the Lord? In the chaos and darkness, we may lose sight of Him. But the Lord is in the midst of that darkness. The Lord Jesus Christ came down into the darkness, lives with the lowest people, and emanates His own light. That light shines on those in darkness who are in pain, suffering, grieving, fearful, anxious, and lost, and makes them stand up for the peace of God.
Paul, the author of this letter, said, "The Lord is near." The "Second Coming" did not occur as Paul thought it would, but the Lord is indeed near us. It is the light that illuminates us and gives us joy. The Lord is with us, protecting us, saving the lowly, and creating the peace of God.
Do Not Be Anxious
Having experienced the Lord's presence, Paul was able to say, "Do not be anxious about anything" (4:6). The Japanese word, "omoi wazurau" for "to be anxious" is "to suffer and be troubled by various thoughts." It could be said that the word represents the very thoughts we have in the midst of chaos and darkness.
When Paul says, "Do not be anxious," he is not suggesting that we give up on many things and stop thinking. The question is, who do we look to when we are anxious? Aren't we anxious because we cannot trust in God? Aren't we relying on our own abilities to create our own destiny and secure a sure future for ourselves? When we do that, we are relying on ourselves rather than on God.
Such thinking is not unusual these days. In today's society, it is becoming more and more difficult to rely on someone else, and we are sometimes told that we must help ourselves before we can seek help from society or those around us. We have to take responsibility for everything by ourselves. This means that we have to rely on ourselves first. After being told that, it has become more difficult to rely on someone other than ourselves - even if it is God!
When Paul says, "Do not be anxious," he means that we should stop relying solely on ourselves. This is about trusting that God will protect and care for us. It is true that this world is in chaos. Yet, we must trust and surrender to God. He is in control of the world. He loves each one of us. He descends to each of us. And He seeks to protect and guide us.
That was the attitude that Jesus had. Jesus suffered and struggled in the Gethsemane prayer, but in the end, He surrendered to God rather than to Himself. Jesus said:
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Luke 22:42)
In the darkness, we feel desperate. We suffer and worry about many things. But Paul encourages us to quit taking it all on ourselves, trust in what God is going to do, and surrender to His guidance.
Prayer to God That Surpasses Human Knowledge
Paul continued, "in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Whatever you wish, he says, confide in God. We can pray about anything. Or rather, we are required to pray to God for whatever we wish.
However, that does not mean that God will grant whatever we wish. It does not mean that if we pray to God, everything will happen the way we want. Such an expectation is not, after all, relying on God. It is simply relying on ourselves while using God.
In fact, what we think will happen is not always what we expect to be the best outcome. We are in the midst of chaos and darkness, unable to see what lies ahead. In fact, we cannot really understand what is happening now. Considering this, even when we imagine what seems to be the best thing for ourselves, our desires may not lead to a good outcome.
That is why we pray with Jesus, "yet not my will, but yours be done." We think carefully and live carefully. Yet, everything going according to our wish does not always lead to a good outcome. So, we trust in the Lord, who knows best.
What God is trying to create is "the peace of God that surpasses all human knowledge." We pray to God, trusting and asking Him to create His peace that transcends human knowledge, that is, our personal knowledge. To transcend human knowledge does not mean the amount of knowledge we have, or how smart we are, or anything like that. It means that God will create a new world, far beyond anything we can imagine worrying about.
The reason we pray to God for everything is not to entrust only part of our prayers and desires to God, but to entrust all - and the future ahead - to God, who rules this world and cares for all its people. God rightly takes care of us, beyond our imagining, not because we have found the answer, but because God has preceded us and is about to lead us into a new world. When we know this, we will pray with thanksgiving.
God's Power of Salvation
If we trust God and surrender everything to Him, Paul assures us, "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (4:7).
The peace of God will guard us. That "peace" is the Greek word "ειρήνη," a word associated with the Hebrew word "שָׁלוֹם." This peace is not limited to a peaceful mind and the absence of worry. God's peace does not mean a peaceful heart.
Peace is used in the same sense as "salvation." In other words, "God's peace" means the salvation that God brings. When we think of peace, we think of a calm, undisturbed state, but God's peace is more positive, more active, and more vigorous. God's peace refers to the power of salvation that breaks through the chaos and darkness in the world, re-creates broken relationships, and restores the world God called good.
Such is God's peace -- God's power of salvation -- that will protect you in Christ Jesus. Even in the midst of chaotic times when the future is uncertain, Jesus descends into the chaos and stays with us. He shares and accepts all the pain, suffering, and sorrows we have in the darkness.
Even when we don't know how to get out of the darkness, even when we have lost the light that shines in the darkness, God is far more than we can imagine, creating the world anew, rebuilding what was broken, and recovering what was lost. God shines his light into the darkness to rescue all of us, with those who suffer, hurt, and grieve at the head of the line.
His power of salvation protects us. He supports us through suffering, pain, and sorrow, and gives us comfort to rise again. If the forces of chaos and darkness have taken us captive and broken God's peace, He free us from our chains and change our direction, inviting us to become His followers. Let us receive this grace of the Lord as we go through this year.
