出エジプト記には、イスラエルが新しい場所へ向かって歩み出す物語が記されています。その場所へ至る道は、イスラエルの人々にとってまだ見ぬ道であり、困難の待ち受けている道でした。特に今日の場面では、人々は背後から敵に迫られており、逃げ出すことができない場所にいました。困難を前にしながら、前に進むしかない。そんな人々に向かって主である神が語られました。
新しい年度が始まり、私たちも新しく歩み出そうとしています。一年の教会の歩みが見通せているわけではありませんし、困難なこともあることが予想されます。しかし様々な変化が訪れており、ここに留まり続けることもできません。そんな私たちも、イスラエルの人々と共に、神の言葉を聞きたいと思います。
危機に見舞われた傷ついた人々
エジプトで奴隷とされていたイスラエルの人々は、神の導きによってエジプトを脱出しました。指導者として立てられたモーセを先頭にして前進し、「葦の海」の海辺までたどり着きました。目前に広がる海を越えれば、広大な荒れ野が待ち受けています。その先に、モーセが神と出会ったシナイ山があり、約束の地カナンがあります。
人々の目には、その光景はどのように映っていたでしょうか。聖書において海は混沌や死、破壊力を象徴するものです。荒れ野もまた、不毛や死を象徴する場所でした。これから進んで行く道は、誰も見たことがない道であり、危険や困難が待ち受けている場所でした。
イスラエルの人々が海辺にテントを張り、宿営をしていると、背後からエジプトの軍隊が迫ってきました。馬に引かれた戦車が600、それに加えて大勢の騎兵と歩兵がイスラエルの人々の後を追ってきたのです。戦いになれば、イスラエルに勝ち目はありません。逃げ場のない状況に追い込まれて、人々は非常に恐れ、主に向かって叫び、モーセに不満を訴えました。
「我々を連れ出したのは、エジプトに墓がないからですか。荒れ野で死なせるためですか。一体、何をするためにエジプトから導き出したのですか。我々はエジプトで、『ほうっておいてください。自分たちはエジプト人に仕えます。荒れ野で死ぬよりエジプト人に仕える方がましです』と言ったではありませんか。」（出エジプト記14章11~12節）
エジプトの地は、イスラエルの人々にとって安住の地ではありませんでした。そこで奴隷にさせられ、厳しい重労働を強いられ、人々はうめき、叫んでいました。生まれてきた幼子の命を奪うようにとの命令さえ出されていたのです。人間として生きることが許されない、そのエジプトから逃れ出ることは、人々の願いであったはずです。
けれども、目前に迫る危機は、過去の苦しみを忘れさせてしまいます。「喉元過ぎれば熱さを忘れる」、ということわざの通りです。すぐそこにある危機に比べれば、過去の苦しみがどれほど大きなものであっても、その方がましに見えてしまう。そこから先に進もうという意欲が失われ、困難にも立ち向かっていこうとする勇気が奪われてしまった、傷ついた人々の姿がありました。
恐れず、落ち着いて、主の救いを見よ
危機を前に心が挫けそうになっている人々がいるときに、神はそれを遠くで傍観してはおられません。人の叫びを聞き、痛みを知る神は、そこから救い出すという約束を決して忘れません。神はそのために人を遣わし、この世に関わり、人々を導こうとされます。
このときまでも、既に神はその手を伸ばしておられました。人々の指導者としてモーセを選び、エジプトの王の心を変えさせるために奇跡を起こしました。イスラエルの人々が通っていく道も、最短ルートではなく、わざわざ回り道をさせました。それは、多くの人が通る道では敵に出会って戦わなければならなくなるため、イスラエルの人々の心が折れて、エジプトへと戻ってしまうかもしれないと考えたからです。
神は何でも思いのままにできるわけではありません。神はこの世界の社会的・政治的状況を無視して新しいことを起こせるのではないのです。神がその手を伸ばす時、その時代・その地域の様々な状況の中で行動し、影響を及ぼします。ご自身の計画のために用いることのできるものは何か、障害となるものは何か、救い出そうとする人々を導くためにはどうすればいいか。神はこの世の中で危機に襲われた人々のために最善を尽くされます。
その神はモーセを通して人々に呼びかけました。
「恐れてはならない。落ち着いて、今日、あなたたちのために行われる主の救いを見なさい。」（出エジプト記14章13節）
「恐れてはならない」。それは神が、まだ見ぬ世界へ新しい一歩を踏み出そうとする人や、大きな苦難に見舞われて叫んでいる人に向かって語られる言葉です。それは、神が共におられ、人々のために御業をなしてくださるから、最悪の恐れは決して現実とはならないという保証の言葉です。次々に苦難がやってきても、神はあなたがたの傍らにおられ、あなたがたのために働かれる。だから、恐れる必要がない、と神が保証してくださいます。
「落ち着きなさい」。それは自分の持ち場に立って、身構えることです。しかしそれは、自分たちで武器を取って戦うことへの備えではありません。神が先立ってあなたがたのために行われる救いを見るために身構えているのです。危機の中で狭くなった視野を広げて、神があなたがたのためになそうとする事柄――あるいは既になさってくださっている事柄――に目を向ける。そのために落ち着くことが求められるのです。
危機や困難があったとしても、神はそこから救い出すという計画を決して手放さず、必ず成し遂げます。命を守り、祝福を与える場所まで人々を導くために、神はあらゆる手段を用いられます。そのとき、その場所にも、神は共におられます。だから私たちも、恐れずに、落ち着いて、今日、行われる主の救いを見、主の呼びかけに応えて立ち上がるのです。

" Do Not Be Afraid, Stand Firm "
Scripture reading is taken from Exodus 14:13-14
The book of Exodus tells the story of the Israelites as they set out for a new place. The path to that place was an unseen way for the Israelites and a path that was full of challenges. Particularly in today's passage, they were in a place where they could not escape because their enemies were closing in on them from behind. They had no choice but to move forward in the face of hardship. The Lord God spoke to such people.
We started a new fiscal year, and we too are about to take a new step forward. We do not have a clear view of the church's path for the year ahead, and there may be some challenges. But various changes are occurring, and we cannot stay put. Therefore, let us, along with the Israelites in today’s passage, listen to the Word of God.
Broken People amid a Crisis
The Israelites, who were enslaved in Egypt, fled Egypt with God's guidance. Led by Moses, who had been appointed as their leader, they advanced until they reached the shores of the "Sea of Reeds”. Beyond the sea, a vast wilderness awaited them. Just beyond that lies Mt. Sinai, where Moses met God, and the promised land of Canaan.
I wonder what the scene looked like in the eyes of the people. In the Bible, the sea symbolizes chaos, death, and destructive power. The wilderness also represented barrenness and death. The road ahead was a path no one had ever seen before, and a place where danger and difficulties awaited.
As the Israelites camped in tents by the sea, the Egyptian army closed in behind them. Six hundred chariots drawn by horses, plus a large number of riders and officers, pursued the Israelites. If a battle broke out, the Israelites would not stand a chance. The people were so terrified that they cried out to the Lord and complained to Moses.
“They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”” (Exodus 14:11-12 / New International Version (NIV))
The land of Egypt was no haven for the Israelites. They were forced into slavery and hard labour there, and the people were moaning and crying. They were even ordered to take the lives of newborn infants. It must have been their wish to escape from Egypt, where they were not allowed to live fully as humans.
However, the looming crisis made them forget their past sufferings. As the saying goes "Vows made in storms are forgotten in calms", no matter how great the storms of the past are, the storm itself and the vow will all be forgotten in the face of a new storm. Here we see a broken people, who have been deprived of the courage to confront challenges, and who have lost the desire to move forward.
Do Not Be Afraid. Stand firm and See the Deliverance of the Lord.
When people's spirits are on the verge of breaking down in the face of crisis, God does not stand idly at a distance. God, who listens to the cries of people and knows their pain, never forgets the promise to deliver them. That is why God sends people into the world, to engage and to lead the people.
Even up to this time in today’s story, God's hand has already been stretched out. God chose Moses as the leader of the people and worked miracles to change the heart of the Egyptian pharaoh. Even the path taken by the Israelites was not the shortest route, but a deliberate detour. This is because God thought that the Israelites' spirits might be broken, and they would go back to Egypt because the shorter path taken by most would lead them to meet and fight other enemies.
However, God cannot do everything as desired. In other words, God does not ignore the social and political conditions of the world to make new things happen. When God reaches out, God acts and influences within the various circumstances of that time and region. What can be used for the fulfilment of God’s plan, what are the obstacles, and what can be done to lead those God seeks to deliver? God works for the best of those who are stricken with a crisis in this world.
God called out to the people through Moses.
“Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.”
(Exodus 14:13 / NIV)
“Do not be afraid.” These are the words that God speaks to those who are about to take a new step into a world they have yet to see, and to those who are crying out in the face of great hardship. They are words of assurance that the worst fears will not become reality because God is with them and is working for them. Though tribulation may come one after another, God is with you and is at work for you. That is why God assures us that there is no need to be afraid.
“Stand firm.” This means to stand your ground and brace yourself. But this does not mean preparing to take up arms and fight. It means to brace yourselves to see the deliverance prepared for you, which God is already at work. Broaden your vision, which has become narrowed in the crisis, and look to what God intends to do for you, or to what has already been done for you. To do this, we are called to stand firm.
No matter the crisis or hardship, God will never let go of the plan to deliver and the plan will be fulfilled. God will use every means to lead the people to the place where life is preserved, and blessings are given. And at that time and place, God is with us. So, we, too, are not to be afraid, but to stand firm. Let us set our eyes on the Lord’s deliverance brought to us today and stand to answer the Lord’s call.
