『将来と希望を与える平和の計画』エレミヤ書29章10～14節

エレミヤは、破滅に向かっていくユダ王国の中で、偽預言者と対決した預言者です。偽預言者の言葉は人々に喜ばれましたが、それは神を忘れさせ、神の言葉を聞くことを妨げる誘惑の言葉となっていました。エレミヤはそれとは対照的に、理性的に現実を受け入れるように勧めました。苦難が和らぐように祈りながら、時が満ちるのを忍耐して待つことを教え、その先にある将来と希望を与える平和の計画を知らせました。私たちが神を求め、神の言葉を聞くことで、私たちは神の平和の計画に加えられていきます。

神を忘れさせる誘惑の言葉

エレミヤ書は、破滅に向かっていく南ユダ王国において語られた預言をもとにして書き記されました。ユダ王国があるシリア・パレスチナ地方は大国に挟まれた地域です。ユダはアッシリアの属国とされていましたが、アッシリアが滅亡すると、今度はエジプトの支配下に置かれます。しかし数年も経たないうちに今度は巨大な力をつけたバビロニアの属国となりました。

多額の貢ぎ物をバビロニアに捧げて生き残ってきたユダ王国でしたが、バビロニアがエジプトで戦いに敗れた時から反旗を翻し、貢ぎ物を停止しました。その3年後、遠征してきたバビロニア軍によってエルサレムは陥落し、多くの指導者や技術者が神殿の財宝と共にバビロニアへと連行されました。紀元前598年に起こったこの出来事は「第一次バビロン捕囚」と呼ばれます。このような状況下で、預言者エレミヤがバビロンに捕囚とされた人々に向けて送った手紙が、エレミヤ書29章に書き写されました。

エレミヤはこのような苦難の中で神の言葉を告げた預言者ですが、彼が直面した大きな問題の一つは「偽の預言者との対決」でした。偽預言者は、バビロニア軍がエルサレムに攻めてきたときも、「災いは降りかからない、平和だ」と言い続けました。また、エルサレムが陥落し、人々が捕囚とされてからは、「主がすぐさまバビロニアの王を打ち破り、奪われたものを取り戻される」と語りました。

エレミヤは、このような偽預言者たちは神に遣わされてはいないと言い、彼らに対する神の言葉を告げました。

「万軍の主はこう言われる。お前たちに預言する預言者たちの言葉を聞いてはならない。彼らはお前たちに空しい望みを抱かせ、主の口の言葉ではなく、自分の心の幻を語る。わたしを侮る者たちに向かって彼らは常に言う。『平和があなたたちに臨むと主が語られた』と。また、かたくなな心のままに歩む者に向かって『災いがあなたたちに来ることはない』と言う。」（エレミヤ書23:16~17）

偽預言者たちの語る言葉は、神の言葉ではなく、自分の心の幻、自分自身の願いでした。そしてそれは民衆が聞きたいと望んでいた言葉でもありました。それは単に間違っていたとか、その通りにはならなかったというだけではありません。

「偽りを預言し、自分の心が欺くままに預言する預言者たちは、互いに夢を解き明かして、わが民がわたしの名を忘れるように仕向ける。」（エレミヤ書23:26~27）

預言者が告げた神の言葉は、必ずしも私たちが聞きたいと望むような言葉ではないかもしれません。辛く苦しい現実に直面させたり、根深い問題を露わにしたりします。その言葉を聞くことによって、神は私たちが新しく生まれ変わり、進む方向を変えるように導こうとされます。けれども人が聞きたいと望む言葉は、神の言葉を聞くことを妨げ、私たちが神を忘れるように仕向ける誘惑の言葉となってしまうのです。

現代にも溢れる誘惑

エレミヤは単に破滅することだけを告げていたのではありません。破滅を避けるために方向転換するようにとの忠告も告げていました。

「主はこう言われる。正義と恵みの業を行い、搾取されている者を虐げる者の手から救え。寄留の外国人、孤児、寡婦を苦しめ、虐げてはならない。またこの地で、無実の人の血を流してはならない。」（エレミヤ書22:3）

このような忠告に耳を塞いでしまうことが、私たちが陥る誘惑の罠です。それは決して過去のことではないでしょう。先月からNetflixで配信が始まった“Don't Look Up”という映画が気になっています。レオナルド・ディカプリオとジェニファー・ローレンスが演じる主人公は、半年後に地球に衝突する彗星を発見しました。このままでは人類も、地球上のほとんどの生物も死んでしまうというほどの危機だとわかり、二人は大統領に進言したり、テレビ番組に出演して危機を訴えたりします。

けれども大統領は支持率を気にしながら、状況を静観し、精査する（Sit tight and assess）と言って全く取り合いません。TVショーでも真剣には取り扱われず、感情的に訴える姿をSNS上で笑いものにされる始末となります。

この映画は、巨大彗星を気候変動という現実の危機になぞらえて作られています。主演のディカプリオは、一躍有名になった『タイタニック』が公開された翌年に、気候変動緩和を目的とした財団を立ち上げた方です。まだ本編を見ていませんが、この映画で描かれるように、現代に生きる私たちも、忠告に耳を閉ざしてしまいがちです。

それは気候変動の事柄に限らないでしょう。人類社会は進歩したように思われますが、搾取と抑圧は形を変えながら繰り返され、暴力は深刻化されています。それが見えにくくされ、忘れられるから、まるで人間は進化し、神無しでも生きられるかのように――あるいは神にでもなったかのように――振舞っているのではないでしょうか。

情報が溢れる時代になりましたが、そこにはフェイクニュースも混じり合い、多様なはずの情報が制限され、偏った情報だけが得られます。その中で何が偽の言葉で、何が真の言葉であるのか、どれが神の言葉で、どれが誘惑の言葉であるのか、見分けることは当たり前にできることではありません。

苦しいこともたくさんありますし、余裕も失っていく中で、聞きたい言葉だけを聴こうとすることもあるかもしれません。そのようにして、私たちも神を忘れさせ、神から離れさせるような誘惑の言葉に捕らわれてしまうかもしれないのです。時代は大きく変わりましたが、エレミヤの預言は、私たちにとってもなお聞くべき言葉だと受け止めています。

平和の計画への悔改め

それでは、エレミヤは捕囚の地にいる人々へ、どのような内容の手紙を送ったのでしょうか。神の言葉を聞かず、誘惑に陥ってしまった人々へ、エレミヤは神の言葉を告げました。それは、捕囚の地での苦難を耐え忍ぶように、という内容でした。その地に家を建て、果樹を植え、家族を作って生活しなさい、と神は言われたのです。

預言の言葉というと、現実から離れた、理性的ではない熱狂的な内容というイメージを持たれるかもしれません。偽預言者たちが語ったような、今すぐ神の介入があり、バビロニア帝国を滅ぼして解放される、というものこそ預言の言葉だというイメージがあります。

エレミヤはそうではなく、現実を直視することを求めました。面白くもない、痛みでしかないようなその現実を、理性的に受け入れ、そこで地に足の着いた生活をすることを求めたのです。限られた条件の中で、少しでも苦難が和らげられるように平和を祈りながら、時が満ちるのを忍耐して待つように、エレミヤは告げたのでした。

「わたしが、あなたたちを捕囚として送った町の平安を求め、その町のために主に祈りなさい。その町の平安があってこそ、あなたたちにも平安があるのだから。」（エレミヤ書29:7）

エレミヤは現状を楽観視しません。破滅をもたらした指導者の怠慢、神の言葉よりも誘惑の言葉を求めた民衆の堕落をそのままにして、失われたものをすぐに取り戻すことなどできないことをエレミヤは知っていました。神が示されたのは、苦難の現実を痛みをもって受け入れることでした。それを悔い改めの機会として、解放されたときに新たな道へ歩み出すための準備をするように求めたのです。

エレミヤは、その悔い改めと解放の先にある神の計画も告げました。

「わたしは、あなたたちのために立てた計画をよく心に留めている、と主は言われ　る。それは平和の計画であって、災いの計画ではない。将来と希望を与えるものである。」（エレミヤ書29:11）

今の苦難は永遠には続きません。神は私たちを災いに遭わせることを計画しておられるのではなく、平和の計画を立て、将来と希望を与えようとしておられます。そこから離れてしまったのは、私たち人間が神の言葉よりも誘惑の言葉を望んだからでした。

平和の計画を実現するために、神は私たちの悔改めを求めます。それは私たちが神を尋ね求め、心を尽くして神を求めるようになることです。そうするならば、私たちは神を見いだし、神に出会うことができることを、神は約束してくださっています。

「そのとき、あなたたちがわたしを呼び、来てわたしに祈り求めるなら、わたしは聞く。わたしを尋ね求めるならば見いだし、心を尽くしてわたしを求めるなら、わたしに出会うであろう、と主は言われる。」（エレミヤ書29:12~14）

将来と希望を与える平和の計画

壊れてしまった社会が修復され、苦難から解放されるためには時間がかかります。それは私たち人間が悔い改め、進む方向を変えるまでに時間がかかるからです。捕囚からの解放について、神はこのように告げました。

「バビロンに七十年の時が満ちたなら、わたしはあなたたちを顧みる。わたしは恵みの約束を果たし、あなたたちをこの地に連れ戻す。」（エレミヤ書29:10）

「70年」というのは、ちょうど70年後に起こるということよりも、人間の生涯をまるごと含む期間が過ぎるということを意味しています。つまり神は、捕囚された人々が誰ひとりとして故郷には帰ることができない、と告げたのです。解放の時は、あなたたちの後の世代に訪れるのだ、ということです。

その知らせをイスラエルの人々は「福音」として聞いたのでしょうか。私たちはこの知らせを「良き知らせ」として聞くことができるでしょうか。「今だけ、金だけ、自分だけ」という思想が世界を覆っていますが、それは誘惑の言葉であり、結局のところ人間を真に豊かにするものではなかったと私は思います。70年後の解放を見つめながら、今、神を求め、神の言葉を聞く。それが繋がっていくところに、私たち人間の祝福と平和があるのではないでしょうか。

今の社会が直面している大きな問題から解放されるのは、私たちが生きている時代ではないかもしれない。けれども神は今も将来と希望を与える平和の計画に向けて歩み続けておられる。私たちもその計画に加わり、神と共に、神の愛と恵みの中で生きるように招かれている。その中で私たちの平和も求めて祈ることが許されている。私たちも神の言葉を聞き神と出会って生きることができる。それがエレミヤの告げた預言の言葉、神から託された福音だったのではないでしょうか。

"A Plan for Peace That Gives Us a Hopeful Future"

Scripture reading is taken from Jeremiah 29: 10-24

Jeremiah was a prophet who confronted the false prophets in the Kingdom of Judah, which was heading for destruction. The words of the false prophets pleased the people, but they were words of temptation that made them forget God, preventing them from hearing God's words. Jeremiah, by contrast, urged the people to accept reality. He taught them to wait patiently for the fullness of time, praying that their tribulations would be alleviated, and informing them of the future plans for peace in order to give them hope. By seeking God and listening to God's words, we will all be added to His plan of peace.

Words of Temptation That Make Us Forget God

The book of Jeremiah was written based on a prophecy that was spoken in the doomed Southern Kingdom of Judah. The region of Syria and Palestine, where the Kingdom of Judah was located, was sandwiched between major powers. The kingdom of Judah had been a vassal state of Assyria, but after the fall of Assyria, it came under the control of Egypt. But within a few years, it became a vassal state of Babylonia, which had gained enormous power.

The Kingdom of Judah, which had survived by paying a large tribute to Babylonia, stopped paying tribute and turned against it when Babylonia was defeated in battle in Egypt. Three years later, Jerusalem fell to the Babylonian army, and many of its leaders and engineers were taken to Babylonia, along with the treasures from the temple. This incident, which took place in 598 B.C., is known as the "First Babylonian Captivity." It was under these circumstances that the prophet Jeremiah sent a letter to the people taken to Babylonia, which was transcribed in Jeremiah 29.

Jeremiah was a prophet who proclaimed God's words in the midst of such hardship. One of the major problems he faced was "confronting the false prophets." Even when the Babylonian army invaded Jerusalem, the false prophets kept saying, "No plague will befall us. We are in peace." After the fall of Jerusalem and the captivity of the people, they said that the Lord would soon defeat the Babylonian king and restore what had been taken from the Babylonians.

Jeremiah said that these false prophets were not sent by God and told the people God's words against the false prophets:

"Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you;

    they fill you with false hopes.

They speak visions from their own minds,

    not from the mouth of the Lord.

They keep saying to those who despise me,

    ‘The Lord says: You will have peace.’

And to all who follow the stubbornness of their hearts

    they say, ‘No harm will come to you.’" (Jeremiah 23:16-17)

The words spoken by the false prophets were not the words of God, but the visions of their own hearts, their own desires. And they were the words that the people wanted to hear. It wasn't just that they were wrong, or that the prophecies didn't turn out the way they were supposed to.

"How long will this continue in the hearts of these lying prophets, who prophesy the delusions of their own minds? They think the dreams they tell one another will make my people forget my name, just as their ancestors forgot my name through Baal worship." (Jeremiah 23:26-27)

The words of God proclaimed by the prophets may not always be the words we want to hear. They can bring us face to face with painful realities or expose deep-seated problems. Through those words, God wants to lead us to be born again and change our direction. But the words that we want to hear end up becoming words of temptation that prevent us from hearing God's words and cause us to forget Him.

Temptations Still Abound

Jeremiah was not just talking about destruction. He was also advising the people to change direction to avoid destruction.

"This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right. Rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place." (Jeremiah 22:3)

Covering our ears to such advice is the trap of temptation we fall into. This is never a thing of the past. This story is similar to a recent movie called "Don't Look Up", which started streaming on Netflix last month. The main characters, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, have discovered a comet that will hit the earth in six months. They realize that this is a crisis that will kill the human race and most of life on earth. Therefore, they advise the president of the United States and appear on a TV show to voice their concerns.

However, the president derides their advice, saying "Sit tight and assess," because he is concerned about his approval ratings. Even the TV show hosts don't take them seriously, and their emotional appeals are laughed at on social media.

This movie compares the giant comet to the real crisis of climate change. The main actor, DiCaprio, started a foundation for climate change mitigation a year after the release of "Titanic," which made him famous. I haven't seen "Don't Look Up" yet, but as the story line depicts, we tend to ignore advice.

This is not limited to the issue of climate change. Human society seems to have made progress, but exploitation and oppression continue in different forms, and violence is always a problem. Because this condition is hidden and forgotten, we are tempted to behave as if we can live without God or even as if each of us is God.

We live in an age of abundant information, with fake news mixed in. Information that should come from many sources is actually limited and therefore biased information is easily available. It is not easy to discern what is false and what is true, which are the words of God and which are the words of false prophets.

Since we encounter a variety of hardships, becoming weaker and weaker, we may only listen to the words we want to hear. In this way, we get caught up in words of temptation that make us forget God and separate us from Him. Times have changed a lot, but I believe that Jeremiah's prophecy is still what we need to hear.

Repentance for the Plan of Peace

What did Jeremiah write to the people in captivity? To those who did not listen to the words of God and had fallen into temptation, Jeremiah told them to endure the hardships of captivity. Jeremiah said that God told them to build houses, plant fruit trees, and raise families in the land.

When we think of prophetic words, we may think they are far from reality, something that is irrational and passionate. We may feel that prophetic words should sound like the words of the false prophets, saying that God will intervene right now and destroy the Babylonian Empire and liberate the people.

Jeremiah didn't give such words. He wanted the people to face reality. He asked them to rationally accept a reality that was not interesting, but only painful, and to live a grounded life there. Jeremiah told them to wait patiently in the limited conditions for the fullness of time, praying for peace to alleviate the hardships.

"[S]eek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper." (Jeremiah 29:7)

Jeremiah was not optimistic about the current situation. He knew that there was no quick fix for what had been lost, leaving in place the negligent leaders who had brought destruction to the people who sought the words of temptation rather than the words of God. God's instruction to the people was a painful acceptance of the reality of suffering. God told them to use this as an opportunity for repentance and to prepare themselves to embark on a new path when they are freed.

Jeremiah also told them of God's plan beyond repentance and deliverance.

" For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. " (Jeremiah 29:11)

The present suffering will not last forever. God is not planning to destroy us, but to bring peace and to give us a future of hope. The reason we have strayed from this path is because we have desired the words of temptation more than the words of God.

To realize the plan of peace, God seeks our repentance. It means that we must seek Him with all our hearts. God promises us that if we do so, we will find Him.

"Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity. I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”" (Jeremiah 29:12-14)

A Plan for Peace that Gives a Hopeful Future

It takes time for a broken society to be restored and freed from suffering because we must first repent and change our direction. This is what God told the people about the deliverance from captivity.

"When seventy years are completed in Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place." (Jeremiah 29:10)

"Seventy years" does not mean that it will happen in exactly seventy years, but rather that a period of time that includes an entire human lifetime will pass. In other words, God told the captive people that none of them would be able to return to their homeland. God told them that the time of liberation would come in the generation after them.

Did the people of Israel hear this news as "gospel"? Can we hear this news as "good news"? I believe that the "just for now, just for money, just for myself" mentality that pervades the world is based on words of temptation, and that this way of thinking has never helped humanity.　As we wait for liberation in 70 years, we must seek God and listen to His words. I believe that blessings and peace can be found in the connection between prayers for the present and for the future.

We may not be the generation that is freed from the major problems facing our society today. But God is still working towards a plan of peace that will give us a future of hope. We are invited to be part of that plan, and to live in God's love and grace. In the process, we are allowed to pray for our peace as well. By hearing God's words, we can live with God. I believe that this is the prophecy that Jeremiah announced, and the gospel that God entrusted to him.
