『互いに仕えなさい』ペトロの手紙一4章7～11節

この世の全ては神様のもの

今月は「スチュワードシップ月間」です。「スチュワードシップ」とは、ギリシア語の“οἰκονόμος”という言葉が基になっている言葉です。ペトロの手紙一4章10節で「管理者」と訳されているのが、この“οἰκονόμος”です。ですから、スチュワードシップとは、管理者としての働きのことを意味しています。

「管理者」というからには、そこでは自分の物ではない何かを管理することが前提とされています。聖書の時代では、家の主人が自分の財産を管理人に託すことがありました。管理人には財産の管理と運用の一切が任されますが、それでも財産の所有権は管理人ではなく主人にあります。教会でスチュワードシップについて考える時には、私たちが神様のものを管理し、用いることを考えます。

では、何が神様のものなのでしょうか。教会はもちろんそうですが、それだけではありません。一言で言えば、この世の全てのものが神様のもの、ということができます。

「地とそこに満ちるもの、世界とそこに住むものは、主のもの。

　主は、大海の上に地の基を置き、潮の流れの上に世界を築かれた。」（詩編24：1～2）

神様は素晴らしい世界を創られた。その世界は全て神様のものであり、人間はこの素晴らしい世界の管理者として立てられた。これが聖書の基本的な信仰です。この世にあるもの、この世に生きるものは、それが個人のものであれ、企業や団体のものであれ、国家のものであれ、その全てが本来は神様のものなのです。

不自由な人間

このような所有の理解は、私たちに発想の転換を求めます。私たちの生きる資本主義社会では、所有権ということが厳密に考えられています。これは誰のものか、ということが厳密に区分けされており、自分が所有する物については、それをどのように扱ってもいいと考えられます。

けれども、この世界が神様のものであり、私たちはその管理を託された管理人である、となると、自分の思いだけでそれを好きに扱うことはできなくなります。それは個人の所有物を手離すということではありませんが、それを管理し、用いる目的が、私の思いだけでは決められなくなる、ということです。つまり、神様の管理人であることを自覚したならば、私たちは神様の想いに心を向け、神様の期待に応えようとするようになるのです。

何だか窮屈で不自由なことだと感じるかもしれません。自分の物は自分の思いのままにできる、ということの方が自由であり、その方が幸せを手にすることができる、と思うかもしれません。実際に、この世ではそのようなメッセージが伝えられてきたと思うのです。好きな物を、好きな時に、好きなだけ手に入れて、好きなように使うことができる、それが人間の幸福だ、と。

私もそう思っていました。けれども、今、世界が直面している気候危機を思う時に、そのような考えが間違っていたのかもしれないと思い始めました。人間はとても自由になったはずなのに、自分たちの行動によって大きな災害を引き起こし、水や食料の危機を招こうとしている。それはとても危険なことだとわかっていながら、方向転換することができずにいる。このような人間の姿は少しも自由ではありません。

自由を与える主

神様は私たち人間をこの世の管理人として立ててくださいました。そのとき、神様は私たちのことを全く信頼して、その働きを任せてくださいました。人間は度々、神様の信頼を裏切って来ました。完全にその信頼に応えたことなど、今まで一度もなかったかもしれません。それでも神様は、私たちを日々管理し、事細かに支持を与えて従わせようとはなさいませんでした。私たちが自ら神様の信頼に応えることを信じて、神様は忍耐して待ち続けていてくださいます。

私たちは神様の信頼を知らず、あるいはそれを忘れて、自分が管理人ではなく、主人であるかのように振舞ってきました。それによって神様との関係を損ないました。それによって生じたことは、隣り人との対立や分断であり、環境の破壊でした。私たち人間は、自由に振舞っているつもりでいて、実は滅びへ向かう道から逃れる術を知らない不自由な存在になっていたのではないでしょうか。

神様はそんな私たちを捨ててはおきませんでした。私たちを呼び戻し、立ち帰らせるためにイエス・キリストをこの世に遣わしてくださいました。神様と一つであったイエス様は、私たちに神様の想いを示し、私たちを神様と結び合わせてくださいました。

「わたしの言葉にとどまるならば、あなたたちは本当にわたしの弟子である。あなたたちは真理を知り、真理はあなたたちを自由にする。」（ヨハネ福音書8：31～32）

私たちは神様のもとで真に自由になることができます。それは自分勝手に振舞うことができるという意味ではなく、私も隣人も共に幸せになる自由です。滅びに向かう自由ではなく、神様の祝福に与る自由をイエス・キリストが与えてくださるのです。

それぞれの賜物で互いに仕え合う

クリスチャンは主イエスを私の救い主と信じ、主によって新しくされた者たちであり、神の恵みの善い管理者として生きようとする者たちです。今日の箇所では、クリスチャンの生き方の指針が述べられています。

第一の指針は、思慮深くふるまい、身を慎んで、よく祈ることです。私たちは自分勝手に振舞うのではなく、神様の想いを尋ね求め、それに応えるように自分の想いが変えられていくことを祈り求めます。また、教会の群れが神様の信頼に応えることができるように、祈りを合わせます。この祈りは、誰もが行える奉仕であり、最も基本的な、それでいて最も重要な奉仕です。

それに続いて、心を込めて愛し合うことが挙げられます。「愛は多くの罪を覆う」というのは、初期のキリスト教会が好んで用いていた標語だったと言われています。私たちは独りで神様に仕えるのではなく、共に仕えるのであり、また助け合い、支え合いながら仕えます。独りではこの世に流されてしまいますが、愛し合うという相互性をもつことで、そこに留まり続けたり、あるいは立ち帰ったりすることができます。

この愛は、教会の内側だけに向けられたものではありません。不平を言わずにもてなし合いなさい、と言われています。旅人をもてなすことも神様の想いです。教会は自己目的化されてはなりません。もちろん、この教会のことも考えますが、教会を超えた交わりを大切にすること、また、この世に生きる人々を大切にすることもまた、神様の想いに応えることです。

その教会に、神様はさまざまな恵みを与えてくださいました。神様が私たちに託してくださった賜物はそれぞれに異なりますが、その間に優劣はありません。その奉仕のどれもが神様に仕えるものです。それらは人に仕えるものではなく、神様に仕えるものです。それぞれの賜物が活かされることで、神様が栄光を受けます。そのとき、ここに神の国が現れ、神様の祝福が満ちることでしょう。

その奉仕は、神様がお与えになった力に応じて行うようにと言われています。金沢教会のモットーは、「ゆっくり、ぼちぼち、無理せず・楽せず、できる人ができること、できない人も一緒に、一人一人が精いっぱい」です。人には向き・不向きがあります。その時々によって、できること・できないことも変わってきます。それぞれの力に応じて、でも精いっぱいに神様の恵みの善い管理者となっていきたいのです。

クリスチャンとは、このスチュワードシップ精神に生きる人のことです。神様が願うのは、私だけが豊かになることではなく、私たちが互いに仕え合い、神様の祝福を豊かに分かち合うことです。それは教会の中だけでなく、この世界に広がることを願われていることでもあります。クリスチャンは、神様の信頼と期待に応え、互いに仕え合う豊かさをこの世の中で表します。そうすることで、私たちは誰よりも人に仕えてくださったイエス・キリストを証しし、この世の光となるのです。

" Serve one another "

Everything in this world belongs to God

This month is "Stewardship Month". "Stewardship" is a word based on the Greek word "οἰκονόμος". This word, "οἰκονόμος" is translated as "administrator" in Peter 4:10. So stewardship means working as an administrator.

Being an "administrator" is premised on managing something that is not yours. In the times of the Bible, the owner of the house sometimes entrusts his property to the caretaker. The caretaker is responsible for all management and operation of the property, but the property is still owned by the owner, not the caretaker. When we think of stewardship in the church, it can be thought of as us managing and using God's things.

So, what belongs to God? The church of course, but not the only thing. To sum it up, it can be said that everything in this world belongs to God.

“The earth the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world and all who live in it; for he founded it on the seas and established it on the waters.” (Psalm 24: 1-2)

God created a wonderful world. The whole world belongs to God, and human beings were designated as the manager of this wonderful world. This is the basic faith of the Bible. Everything in this world, living in this world, whether it is an individual, a company or an organization, or a nation, is originally God's.

People with disabilities

This understanding of ownership requires us to change our mindset. In the capitalist society we live in, ownership is strictly considered. There is a decisive benchmark of who this belongs to, and you can handle what you own in any way you like.

However, when this world belongs to God and we are the caretakers who are entrusted with its management, we cannot handle it as we like by our own thoughts. It does not mean letting go of personal property, but it does mean that the purpose of managing and using it cannot be determined by my own thoughts. In other words, if we realize that we are the caretakers of God, we will turn our hearts to God's thoughts and try to live up to God's expectations.

You may find it somewhat restrictive and inconvenient. You may think that you are freer to be able to do what you want with your own things, and that you will be happy. In fact, I think that is how it is promoted in this world. Human happiness is being able to get what you like, when you want, as much as you want, and use it as you like.

I thought so too. But now, when I think of the climate crisis the world is facing, I began to wonder if this idea might have been wrong. Humans should have been very free, but their actions are causing major disasters and is reducing the sources of food and water. Though we know that it's dangerous to continue living like this, but we can't turn around. This doesn’t reflect humans who are free.

Lord gives freedom

God has set us humans as the caretakers of this world. At that time, God completely trusted us and entrusted us with this work. Humans have often betrayed God's trust. And it is possible that humans have never lived up to God’s trust. Despite that, God did not manage us on a daily basis, give us detailed support and forced us into obedience. He will endure and wait, believing that we will live up to his trust.

We have either forgotten or did not acknowledge God's trust and have acted as if we were the master, not the caretaker. This damaged the relationship with God. The result of that was conflict and division with neighbours, and the destruction of the environment. Perhaps we humans were behaving as if we were free, but in fact had become shackled beings who did not know how to escape the path to destruction.

God did not abandon us despite that. He sent Jesus Christ into the world to bring us back and return. Jesus, who was one with God, showed us the feelings of God and united us with God.

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8: 31-32)

We can be truly free under God. It does not mean that you can act as you wish, but that you and your neighbours are free to be happy together. Jesus Christ gives us the freedom to be blessed by God, not the freedom to perish.

Serve each other with your gifts

Christians believe that Lord Jesus is their Saviour, are renewed by the Lord, and are those who seek to live as good administrators through God's grace. Today's passage provides guidance on how Christians live.

The first guideline is to behave thoughtfully, be modest, and pray well. We do not act on our own but ask for God's thoughts and pray that our thoughts will be changed in response. We also pray so that the church’s people can live up to God's trust. This prayer is a service that everyone can do, the most basic, yet the most important service.

Following that is to love each other with all our heart. It is said that "love covers many sins" was a favourite slogan used by early Christian churches. We do not serve God alone, but together, and we serve while helping and supporting each other. You will be swept away by the world if you are alone, but by having mutual love, you can stay grounded or take 1 step back.

This love is not just directed inside the church. It is said that you should serve each other without complaining. It is also God's desire to serve guests. The church must not be selfish. Naturally, we should have the church’s interest in mind, but valuing fellowship beyond the church and cherishing the people who live in this world are also God's wishes.

God has given various graces to the church. The gifts that God has entrusted to us are different, but there is no hierarchy between them. All of these is for serving God. It is not to serve people, but God. God will be glorified by us making the best use of our gifts. At that time, the kingdom of God will appear, and we will be filled with God’s blessings.

It is said that the service should be done according to the power that God has given. The motto of Kanazawa Church is "Slowly, little by little, without overdoing it, not leisurely, what you can do, and with those who can't, each and every one of you is doing your best." There are those who are suitable and those who aren’t. Depending on the time, what you can and cannot do will change. I want to be a good manager of God's grace, within my power.

Christians are those who live in this stewardship spirit. God wants us not only to be rich, but to serve each other and share God's blessings. It is also a desire to share to not only in the church but also in this world. Christians represent the abundance of serving each other in the world, responding to God's trust and expectations. By doing so, we witness Jesus Christ, who has served others more than anyone else, and become the light of the world.
