神に敵対する富（マモン）
より豊かに生きたい、という願いは人類に共通する願いだと思います。その願いは神様も共有しておられます。聖書の中で、人を豊かにする富が与えられることは、たびたび神様からの祝福として語られています。生きる上での苦痛から抜け出し、よりよく生きるための富を神様は与えてくださいます。
それと共に、富について批判的な言葉も聖書の中にはよく見られます。それらの箇所では、貧富の格差や不正との関連で、富や裕福な者が批判されています。富は本来、神様からの祝福でしたが、その富が祝福ではなくなることがあり得ます。
富が祝福であるためには、イエス様の言葉をしっかり受け止めることが必要なのではないかと思います。
「だれも、二人の主人に仕えることはできない。一方を憎んで他方を愛するか、一方に親しんで他方を軽んじるか、どちらかである。あなたがたは、神と富とに仕えることはできない。」（6:24）
イエス様は、神に仕えることと富に仕えることは両立するものではない、と言っておられます。それは二者択一の問題です。ここでの富は「マモン」という特別な言葉が使われています。それは神様に敵対する偶像としての富です。
富（マモン）に支配された人間
富に仕えること――マモンという偶像に支配されること――は、現代社会が直面している深刻な課題なのではないか、と私は思っています。日本を含めた先進国は、この数十年で急速に豊かになりました。けれどもその経済成長の背景では、様々な無理を重ねてきたのではないか、と指摘する人がいます。
日本では多くの人が被雇用者・労働者となって、大きな経済システムの中で働いています。この経済システムは資本の拡張を優先する一方で、労働者の尊厳や心身の健康を後回しにしがちです。ひたすら効率的であることが求められ、過当な競争が強いられる中で、心身ともに消耗し、生命が満たされるような感覚を味わうことは難しくなっています。
また、外の世界に乗り込んでいって、そこにある人間らしい生活を破壊することも繰り返されてきました。貧しい人たちが豊かになることは大切なことですが、そこで先進国の経済の論理だけで労働が持ち込まれ、その社会が守ってきた人間らしい生活や共同体の在り方が無視されてしまうことが起こってきました。
さらには、人間に対する無理だけでなく、自然に対しても無理を強いてきました。限りある資源を制限なく貪りつくし、後戻りのできないような深刻な環境破壊を続け、生き物の生息域を奪うとともに、人間にとっても生きづらい世界へと変えていっています。
環境破壊の一つで、世界中に深刻な影響を与えつつあるものが地球温暖化による気候変動です。気候変動によって、ある地域では洪水や巨大台風の被害が多発し、他の地域では干ばつが進んで水や食料が得られなくなることが懸念されています。住む場所や生きる術を失った人たちが数億人単位で移民や難民となり、生活基盤が揺らぐことで紛争や戦争が起こるリスクも高まると言われています。
世界は豊かになってきたはずでした。ところが経済的に豊かな国々は、人間が生きるための土台となっている地球環境を今も破壊し続けています。それは経済的にも大きな損失を生みます。人間はこの世の富を支配することができると思い込んできましたが、実はマモンという富によって支配されていたのではないか、と私には思えます。
神に仕える
経済成長の背景にあった様々な無理は、どれもが神様に仕えることとは両立されないものです。神様は私たち人間が、この世界で豊かに生きることができるように、祝福された富を備えてくださいました。神様は私たち一人ひとりのことを、その髪の毛までも一本残らず数えるほどに覚えてくださり、その富を与えてくださいます。さらには、私たち人間がこの世界でその富を分かち合い、共に豊かになることができるような社会をつくるために、律法を与えて道を示してくださいました。
このような神様を愛し、仕えるならば、私たちは自分を大切にしますし、隣り人を同じように大切にします。グローバル化した世界にあっては、隣り人は身の回りの人だけでなく、遠く離れた地に住む人をも含むでしょう。そうであれば、環境を守り、人の生きるための土台を壊さない方向へと向かっていくはずです。
神様とマモンの富との二者択一は、財産を放棄するということではありませんし、経済活動に無関心になるということでもありません。むしろそれは神様の想いを知り、それに応えていくために、積極的に財産や経済活動についても考え、共に豊かに生きることができる社会を作り出していくことなのでしょう。
新しい人と社会を生み出す神の愛
ヨハネの手紙Ⅰ・3章16～18節では、富に関する神様の想いがこのように述べられています。
「イエスは、わたしたちのために、命を捨ててくださいました。そのことによって、わたしたちは愛を知りました。だから、わたしたちも兄弟のために命を捨てるべきです。世の富を持ちながら、兄弟が必要な物に事欠くのを見て同情しない者があれば、どうして神の愛がそのような者の内にとどまるでしょう。子たちよ、言葉や口先だけではなく、行いをもって誠実に愛し合おう。」
イエス様は十字架の出来事を通して、神様の愛を具体的に現わしてくださいました。その愛とは、ご自身の全てを与える、というものです。神様は私たちのために、ご自身を差し出すほどに、私たちを愛してくださいました。それは天地創造の時から変わることのない神様の愛でしたが、イエス様はその愛が決して変わることがないこと、その愛が私たちに向けられていることを示してくださったのです。
ご自身を与える神様の愛は、私たちの心に新たな愛を生み出します。それは、隣り人のために自分を与える、という愛です。神様の愛への感謝の中で、私たちの心は満たされ、貪欲さから解放され、互いに与える喜びが生まれてきます。それによって、富を分かち合う新しい社会を作り出していく。それが神を愛し、神に仕えるという新しい生き方です。
イエス様は新しい社会の姿を示しておられます。神様の愛は、そこに至る希望を私たちに与え、私たちをそこに向けて押し出します。この一年、コロナウイルスによって大きな変化が起こりましたが、私たちの目指すべきアフター・コロナの世界は、元の世界ではないのかもしれません。神様はもっと大きなことを計画しておられる。私たちが、また世界中の人々が富に仕えて奪い続けるのではなく、神様に仕えて――神様の愛に応えて――愛し合うことへと導こうとしておられます。
それは、神様が与えてくださる富が祝福であるために必要なことです。私たちの生命が満たされ、互いに平和に生きることができる。この世の豊かさを心から味わうことができ、共に生きる喜びを感じることができる。そんな新しい社会の在り方を私たちも祈り求め、神様の愛の素晴らしさを証していきたいと思います。

" For wealth to be a blessing "
Scripture reading taken from Matthew 6:24
Wealth (Mammon) against God
I think that the desire to live prosperously is a common desire of all humankind. That wish is also shared by God. In the Bible, giving wealth to enrich people is often spoken of as a blessing from God. God gives us wealth to get out of the suffering from living and to live a better life.
At the same time, critical words about wealth are common in the Bible. In those passages, the rich and wealthy people are criticized in connection with the injustice and gap between rich and poor. Wealth was originally a blessing from God, but it is possible for that wealth to no longer be a blessing.
In order for that wealth to be a blessing, I think it is necessary to firmly accept the words of Jesus.
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one an despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (6:24)
Jesus says that you cannot serve both God and money. It is a choose one out of two question. Wealth here is specially denoted by the word "mammon". It is an idol disguised as wealth that is hostile to God.
Humans dominated by wealth (Mammon)
I think that serving wealth-being dominated by the idol of Mammon-is a serious challenge faced by modern society. Developed countries, including Japan, have rapidly become wealthy in recent decades. However, some people have pointed out that in other side of the economic growth, various unreasonable actions may have been repeated.
In Japan, many people become employees / workers and work in a large economic system. While this economic system prioritizes capital expansion, it tends to put off the dignity and physical and mental health of workers. As efficiency is required which leads to excessive competition, it is difficult to experience a fulfilling life due to exhaustion of both the body and the mind.
Actions of people venturing outside and destroying the habitat over there has been repeated as well. It is good to make the poor richer, but there are cases where because they are labouring based on the economic logic of the developed countries, the human life and community that the society there has protected until now are brushed aside.
Furthermore, we have asked the impossible not only from human beings but also from nature. We devour limited resources without restrictions, continue to make serious and irreversible damages to the environment, deprives the habitat of living things, and gradually transform it into a world that is difficult for humans to live in.
Climate change due to global warming is one of the environmental destructions that is having a serious impact on the world. There are concerns that climate change will cause frequent floods and typhoons in some areas, and droughts in other areas will lead to poor access to water and food. It is said that hundreds of millions of people who have lost their place of residence or their methods to live become immigrants and refugees, and the risk of conflict and war increases due to the fluctuation of their living standard.
The world should have become richer. However, economically rich countries continue to destroy the global environment on which humans live. It also causes great financial loss. I have assumed that humans can control the wealth of this world, but I suspect that it is actually controlled by the idol of wealth Mammon.
Serve God
The various unreasonable actions behind economic growth are not in line with serving God. God has blessed us with wealth so that we humans can live affluently in this world. God remembers each one of us, even the number of hairs on our head, and gives us that wealth. Furthermore, he has given us the law and showed us the way to create a society in which we humans can share our wealth and prosper together in this world.
If we love and serve God like this, we will cherish ourselves and our neighbours as well. In a globalized world, neighbours will include not only those around us, but also those who live far away. If so, we should move in the direction of protecting the environment and not breaking the foundation for human life.
The choose one out of two between God and Mammon's wealth does not mean giving up properties or becoming indifferent to economic activity. Rather, it means in order to know God's thoughts and respond to them, we actively think about property and economic activities so that we can create a society where we can live affluently together.
God's love that creates new people and new society
In 1 John 3: 16-18, God's thoughts about wealth are stated in this way.
“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and truth.”
Jesus revealed God's love with actions which was through the events of the cross. That love is to offer up all of yourself. God loved us so much that he offered himself for us. God's love has not changed since the creation of heaven and earth, and Jesus has proven that that love never changes and that that love is directed at us.
The self-sacrificial love of God gave birth to a new love in our hearts. It's the love of giving yourself for your neighbours. In gratitude for God's love, our hearts are filled, freed from greed, and the joy of giving ourselves to one another is born. By doing so, we will create a new society that shares wealth. That is a new way of life that loves and serves God.
Jesus is showing the shape of a new society. God's love gives us hope to achieve it and pushes us towards it. The coronavirus has made a big difference over the past year, but the after-corona world we should aim for should not be the original world. God is planning something bigger. We are trying to lead people all over the world to love each other by serving God-in response to God's love, rather than continuing to serve wealth and robbing one another.
It is necessary for the wealth that God gives to be a blessing. Our lives are filled, and we can live in peace with each other. You can truly enjoy the richness of the world and feel the joy of living together. We also pray for such a new society and would like to prove the splendour of God's love.
