『協力を惜しまない』使徒言行録11章19～30節

協力伝道を行ってきた金沢教会

本日から来週までの期間を、日本バプテスト連盟では「協力伝道週間」として定めています。そうはいっても、「連盟」がどのようなものか、よくわからないと思われるかもしれません。「協力伝道」がどのようなものかわからなないので祈りようがない、と思われるかもしれません。

金沢教会は協力伝道を体感することができる教会です。協力伝道によって支えられることがなければ、今のような金沢教会はおそらく存在しないからです。

協力伝道に関わる金沢教会の歴史を少しだけ振り返ってみましょう。金沢教会は、1953年に京都教会の伝道所として、連盟の祈りと支援の中で生み出されました。その当時からF・C・パーカー宣教師ご夫妻が伝道の働きを担ってくださり、1964年にはM・J・ランドル宣教師にその働きが受け継がれていきました。

連盟の繋がりの中で、初代牧師として宮地先生が金沢に遣わされ、その後、石堂牧師、瀬戸牧師を招聘してきました。瀬戸牧師の辞任後は、当時、連盟の宣教室長であった安藤先生が臨時牧師として教会を支えてくださいました。その後、宮本牧師、田代牧師を招聘しましたが、1995年に無牧師となったときには、連盟の常務理事であった内藤先生が教会の牧会と幼稚園園長を担ってくださいました。

1996年からは、田口先生が連盟の国内宣教師として金沢教会に派遣されました。「国内宣教師」というのは、後にも先にもこの一件だけであり、2007年まで人的にも経済的にも協力伝道によって支えられました。金沢教会では、2007年から田口先生を改めて牧師として招聘し、昨年まで牧師としての働きを担っていただきました。

2011年にはテイル＆デイナ・ハッカベイ宣教師ご夫妻を、翌年にはカイル＆ジニー・ハッカベイ宣教師ご夫妻をそれぞれ短期宣教師としてお迎えしました。2013年から3年間は、連盟の全国拠点・地域協働プロジェクトでの支援を受けて、カーソン＆ローラ・フーシー宣教師ご夫妻を迎え入れることができました。

牧師の招聘も、宣教師の派遣も、協力伝道の関係があってこそ実現できたことです。その他にも、特伝の講師や伝道隊としてお迎えした方々を挙げればきりがないほどに、多くの方を送っていただきました。会堂建築の際には、全国からの献金もいただきました。連盟の事務所は遠く埼玉にありますが、協力伝道は、金沢教会の歴史の中で具体的に行われてきたことでした。

その一方で、金沢教会も協力伝道に励んできました。全国的な集会に参加することもありましたし、牧師を特伝の講師として派遣したり、神学生を派遣したりしてきました。また、田口先生を理事として２年、理事長として計６年、派遣してきたことも大きな働きであったでしょう。その間、田口先生もお忙しかったと思いますが、それを支え、共に歩んだ教会・役員会も、一緒に協力伝道に励んできた、と言えるでしょう。そして、協力伝道のための献金も、本当に精一杯、ささげてきました。

このように、金沢教会は、まさに協力伝道を行ってきた教会なのです。

人を送り、養い育てる

「協力伝道」という言葉は聖書にはありませんが、教会間の協力ということは、使徒言行録の中にも見つけることができます。今日、お読みした個所は、アンティオキア教会とエルサレム教会の間でなされた協力伝道だと言うこともできるでしょう。

エルサレムで起こった事件と迫害をきっかけとして、各地に散らされていった人たちが、それぞれの町でイエス様の福音を伝えました。その人たちは特別な訓練を受けた宣教師ではありませんでしたが、自分がいる場所で、自分の言葉で、福音を宣べ伝えていきました。

すると、アンティオキアでたくさんの人がイエス様を主と信じるようになりました。それは福音を伝えた人たちが優れていたからではなく、「主がこの人々を助けられた」からです（11：21）。福音は、パウロのように聖書に名前が残された人だけが伝えたのではありません。名前も知られていないたくさんの人たちが、イエス様のことを伝えていきました。その人たちがいて、その人たちを神様が助けてくださったので、あちらこちらで福音が伝えられていったのです。

けれども、そのままでは教会として一つの群れにはなれなかったかもしれません。そこにバルナバが派遣されました。彼は「立派な人物で、聖霊と信仰とに満ちていた」（11：24）と言われています。迫害に晒されていたエルサレム教会が、このような大切な働き人をアンティオキア教会へと送り出したのです。

バルナバはアンティオキアで起こっていることを見て喜びました。そして、タルソスという町からサウロ――後にパウロと呼ばれる人――を連れてきて、丸一年間、アンティオキアの教会で多くの人たちを教えました。タルソスはサウロの出身地でしたが、彼はそこに留まるのではなく、新たなところでの使命に応えたのです。

アンティオキアの人たちは、バルバナやサウロが来る前に、イエス様を主と信じていました。けれども、この世の中でキリスト者として生きていくためには、時間をかけながら、また周りのサポートを受けながら、養い育てられる、ということも必要です。なぜなら、キリスト者として生きること――イエス様に従っていくことは、この世での常識や慣習に反することだからです。

私たちは、イエス様のことを知り、イエス様に従い続けるために、信仰を論じ合い、学び合うことが必要です。時には他の教会から人を招いたり、あるいは『聖書教育』誌や『バプテスト』誌、『世の光』誌などを読んだりしながら、教えられ、導かれることが必要です。

エルサレムの教会は、アンティオキアの教会のために、大切な働き人を送り出しました。それも順風満帆で、余裕のあるときにではなく、まだ教会として誕生したばかりで、迫害を受けている中で、他の教会のために派遣をしたのです。それによってアンティオキアの教会は、バルナバと彼が連れてきたサウロによって教えられ、養い育てられました。これはまさに協力伝道でした。

精一杯をささげる

エルサレム教会とアンティオキア教会、あるいは他の教会との間に、この後も人的な交流があったのかどうかは、よくわかりません。ただ、アンティオキア教会は、エルサレム教会から支援を受けるばかりではなかったことが記されています。

世界中――当時のローマ帝国内――で大飢饉が起こった時、エルサレムを含むユダヤに住む人たちが困窮したことがありました。そのときに、アンティオキア教会の人たちは、それぞれの力に応じて、ユダヤの教会の人たちに援助の品を送りました。その送り物を携えていったのは、バルナバとサウロでした。

二人がアンティオキアにいたのは丸一年間だけでした。もともとそのつもりだったのかもしれませんし、教会の様子を見て、一年で十分だと判断したのかもしれません。あるいはもしかしたら、この援助の品を送るために、一年でその働きを切り上げたのかもしれません。

アンティオキア教会の人たちは、「それぞれの力に応じて」援助をしましたが、それは精一杯のものをささげた、ということでしょう。その支援と共に、アンティオキア教会は重要な働き手であったバルナバとパウロを送り出したのです。

それは見方によれば、アンティオキア教会にとって大きな損失であるということもできるかもしれません。経済的にも、また人的にも、大きな決断が必要だったでしょう。しかし聖書は、それがまるで当然のことであるかのように、この出来事を伝えています。

これからも協力伝道！

使徒言行録を読んでいると、教会が色んなものを分かち合うということは、当たり前のことだったのだと気づかされます。人の働きも分かち合われますし、献金や援助という形でも持っているものが分かち合われます。それぞれの教会は、自分たちだけの思いで進み、自分たちだけのことを考え、自分たちの仲間だけを支える、というような、孤立した教会ではありませんでした。今よりも遠く離れていて、互いの様子が伝わりづらかった状況の中でも、互いに結び合わされて、協力を惜しまない繋がりがあったのです。

現在、連盟は機構改革に取り組んでいます。それによって組織としての形を変えることだけでなく、協力伝道の在り方も変わっていくことが予想されます。以前のように、事務所にお金と人を集めて、そこが全国の諸教会を支援する、という形は終わり、それぞれの教会が主体的に協力していく形へと変わっていきます。

金沢教会は協力伝道によって支えられてきました。そこから励ましを受け、学ぶことができてきました。形は変わっても、私たちは協力を惜しまない教会であり続けましょう。私たちの力に応じて、無理せず、でも楽もせず、主が連盟諸教会を助けてくださり、その間でなされる協力伝道を用いて、喜ばしい実りをもたらしてくださることに期待しながら、これからも協力伝道に励んでいきましょう。

" Spare no effort in cooperating "

Kanazawa Church, which has been a part of the cooperative evangelism

The period from today to next week is designated as "Cooperation Evangelism Week" by the Japan Baptist Convention. That said, you may not be sure what a "federation" looks like. You might think that you can't pray for it because you don't know what "cooperative evangelism" looks like.

Kanazawa Church is a church where you can experience cooperative evangelism. Without being supported by cooperative evangelism, the today’s Kanazawa Church probably would not exist.

Let's take a brief look back at the history of the Kanazawa Church, which is involved in cooperative evangelism. The Kanazawa Church was created in 1953 as the Kyoto Church’s preaching point with the prayer and support of the Federation. At that time, missionaries F.C. Parker and his wife took on the role of evangelists, and in 1964, missionary MJ Randle inherited that work.

During the partnership with the federation, Miyaji sensei was sent to Kanazawa as the first pastor, followed by Rev. Ishido and Rev. Seto. After Rev. Seto's resignation, Ando sensei, who was the missionary director of the federation at that time, supported the church as a temporary pastor. After that, Rev. Miyamoto and Rev. Tashiro took over, but when KBC became pastorless in 1995, Professor Naito, who was the director of the management department of the federation, became the kindergarten headmaster and took charge of the pastoral care of the church.

In 1996, Professor Taguchi was dispatched to the Kanazawa Church as a domestic missionary of the federation. There is only 1 such case of "domestic missionary" , both past and present, and was supported by cooperative evangelism, both financially and in terms of manpower, until 2007. In 2007, Taguchi sensei officially became the pastor of Kanazawa Church and has been working as a pastor until last year.

In 2011, we welcomed the missionaries Tale & Dana Hackabay, and the following year we welcomed the missionaries Kyle & Genie Hackabay as short-term missionaries. For three years from 2013, we were able to welcome Mr. and Mrs. Carson & Laura Fusie with the support of the federation's national base and regional collaboration project.

The invitation of pastors and the dispatch of missionaries could only be achieved through a cooperative evangelism relationship. In addition, the numbers of special lecturers and evangelism teams they have sent out is uncountable. We also received donations from all over the country when building the church. The federation's office is far away in Saitama, but role played by cooperative evangelism can be seen in the history of the Kanazawa Church.

On the other hand, the Kanazawa Church has also worked hard on being a part of the cooperative evangelism. The church members have participated in national meetings, the pastors have been dispatched as special lecturers, and many seminary students has been dispatched as well. Subsequently, Pastor Taguchi was also a director for two years and as a chairman for a total of six years in the federation. That was definitely a major contribution. I think Professor Taguchi was busy during that time, and I believed that he was supported by the church and the board members, so it can also be said as the church as a whole contributed to the cooperative evangelism. Not only that, the church has also done their best to give offerings to the cooperative evangelism.

In this way, the Kanazawa Church is truly a church that has took part in cooperative evangelism.

Send and nurture people

The word "cooperative evangelism" is not in the Bible, but cooperation between churches can also be found in the Acts of the Apostles. It can be said that the passage that was read today, there was a cooperative evangelism between the Church of Antioch and the Church of Jerusalem.

In the wake of the incident and persecution in Jerusalem, people scattered around the country and preached the gospel of Jesus in their respective towns. They were not specially trained missionaries, but they preached the gospel in their own words where they were.

Then, many people in Antioch came to believe that Jesus as the Lord. It is not because the people who preached the gospel were excellent, but because "the Lord’s hand was with them" (11:21). The gospel was not only preached by those whose names were recorded in the Bible, such as Paul. Many people whose names were unknown preached about Jesus. The gospel was preached here and there because of those people and because God helped them.

However, it was probably not possible for them to form a group as a church as it is. Barnabas was dispatched there. He is said to be "a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith" (11:24). The persecuted church of Jerusalem sent such an important worker to the church of Antioch.

Barnabas was delighted to see what was happening in Antioch. And he brought Saul (a man later called Paul) from the town of Tarsus and taught many in the church in Antioch for a whole year. Tarsus was the birthplace of Saul, but instead of staying there, he responded to his calling and went to a new place.

The people of Antioch believed in Jesus as the Lord even before the arrival of Barnabas and Saul. However, in order to live as a Christian in this world, it is also necessary to be nurtured over time with the support of those around us. Because living as a Christian, following Jesus is contrary to common sense and customs in the world.

We need to discuss and learn from each other in order to know Jesus and continue to obey him. Sometimes it is necessary to be taught and guided by inviting people from other churches or reading Bible Education magazines, Baptist magazines, and Light of the World magazines.

The church in Jerusalem has sent important workers for the church in Antioch. It was not during when the church was doing well and had leeway, but when it was just born as a church and was persecuted when they sent such important workers to another church. Because of that, the church in Antioch was taught and nurtured by Barnabas and Saul. This is truly the cooperative evangelism.

Dedicate as much as you can

I'm not sure if there was any further human interaction between the Jerusalem Church and the Church of Antioch, or any other church. However, it is noted that the Church of Antioch did not only receive support from the Church of Jerusalem.

When a great famine broke out all over the world-in the Roman Empire at the time-the Jewish people, including Jerusalem, were in distress. At that time, the people of the Church of Antioch sent aid (based on their capabilities) to the people of the Jewish church. It was Barnabas and Saul who carried the shipment.

They were in Antioch for only a whole year. Maybe they originally intended to do that, or maybe they saw the church and decided that a year was enough. Or maybe in order to be able to send this aid, they tried to finish their work in a year.

The people of the Church of Antioch helped "according to their own strength", which would have been the best they could have done. With that support, the Church of Antioch sent out the important workers Barnabas and Paul.

From a point of view, it could be a big loss for the Church of Antioch. It would have been a big decision, both financially and personally. But the Bible tells this event as if it were nothing out of the ordinary.

We will continue to cooperate with evangelism!

As I read the Acts of the Apostles, I realize that it was natural for the church to share various things. People's work is shared, and what they have in the form of donations and assistance is shared. Each church was not an isolated church, where we go on with our own thoughts, thought only about ourselves, and support only our peers. Even in a situation where they were farther apart than they are now and had difficulty communicating with each other, they were connected to each other and did not spare any effort in cooperating.

The federation is currently working on structural reforms. It is expected that this will not only change the shape of the organization, but also the way of cooperative evangelism. Unlike before, collecting money and people in the office to support churches nationwide will end, and each church will cooperate according to their wishes.

Kanazawa Church has been supported by cooperative evangelism. I was encouraged and learned from it. Even if the shape changes, let us continue to be a church that is willing to cooperate. In response to our strength, without overdoing it, but not while staying in our comfort zone, hoping that the Lord will help the federation churches and use the cooperative evangelism that takes place between them to bring about joyful fruit. Let's continue to work hard on cooperative evangelism.
