地の塩、世の光とされた私たち
「あなたがたは地の塩である」、「あなたがたは世の光である」というのは、イエス様がおっしゃったことです。ここでの「あなたがた」とは、イエス様の話を聞こうとして集まった人たちです。そこには弟子たちだけでなく、イエス様の言葉を聞き、イエス様によって無条件に受け入れられた人たちがいました。
「あなたがたは地の塩であり、世の光である」というのは、御言葉を聞き、イエス様の愛を知り、新しくされた人々に向けて、今も語られている言葉でしょう。聖書を通してイエス様の言葉を聞く私たちも、イエス様から「あなたがたは地の塩であり、世の光である」と言われているのです。
塩と光は、人が生きるために無くてはならないものです。また、「地」や「世」は、この世界のことや、この世界に生きる人々のことを指しています。つまり、「あなたがたは地の塩であり、世の光である」ということは、この世界にとって、またこの世界に生きる人間にとって、あなたたちは無くてはならない存在である、ということです。
そんなことを言われると、ちょっと戸惑ってしまうかもしれません。私がこの世界にとって、無くてはならない存在であるなんて大げさだと感じるかもしれません。確かに、私たちは世界を変えることはできません。それは最初にイエス様の言葉を聞いたガリラヤの人たちも同じでした。
イエス様もそのようなことはよくわかっておられます。ここでの塩や光は、どちらも小さなものです。塩は欠かすことができない調味料ですが、たくさん入れると食べられなくなります。ちょうどいい一つまみの塩はすぐに溶けて見えなくなります。光が強すぎれば、目を開けることもできません。ここでの光は、家の中をぼんやりと照らすともし火の小さな光です。
そのような小さな者であっても、イエス様と出会い、イエス様によって新しくされた者たちが、この世界に必要な存在だとイエス様は言われました。それは、私たちが強い力を持ったからではなく、神様から塩気と光を与えられた者だからです。
地の塩、世の光として出会えるか
この世界には、地の塩、世の光とされた者達が必要とされています。それは2000年前のイエス様の時代だけではなく、今も同じです。先月、東京のマンションの一室で、3歳の梯稀華（かけはし・のあ）ちゃんが亡くなっているのが見つかり、母親の沙希（さき）さんが逮捕されました。この事件のことが、私の心にずっと刺さっています。
沙希さんはシングルマザーとして稀華ちゃんを育てており、稀華ちゃんのことをとてもかわいがっている様子を周りの人もいていました。ところが、沙希さん昨年から稀華ちゃんを保育園に預けなくなり、留守の間は稀華ちゃんを自宅に残していくようになりました。その理由は分かりません。稀華ちゃんが亡くなったとき、沙希さんは8日間も出かけていました。
これはいわゆる育児放棄（ネグレクト）であり、許されるものではありません。ただネット上で沙希さんのことを“鬼母”だとか、“クズ親”だと言って非難している人もいるようですが、私はそのように非難する気持ちにはなれません。なぜなら彼女自身も壮絶な虐待を受けた方だったからです。
沙希さんは小学校2年生のときから児童養護施設に入っていました。彼女が保護されたとき、彼女はあばら骨や腰の骨が浮き出るほどに痩せていました。彼女の両手には無数の傷がありました。それは母親が包丁でつけた傷でした。もし保護されるのが遅れていたら、沙希さんの命が奪われていたかもしれません。
誤解のないようにしていただきたいのですが、私は今回の事件の原因を沙希さんの母親に押し付けたいのではありません。私たちは表面的なことだけを見聞きして、簡単に人を裁いてしまうことがあります。けれども、そのように裁くことは、地の塩、世の光であることとは違うと思うのです。
私たちが地の塩、世の光であると言われて、この世界に必要な存在だと言われるなら、私たちが沙希さんや稀華ちゃんとも地の塩、世の光として出会うことができたのかもしれません。もちろん、遠くに暮らす彼女たちには実際には出会えなかったのですが、もし近くに暮らしていたら、私たちは地の塩、世の光として出会えていたでしょうか。
十字架の主イエス・キリスト
私たちに塩気と光を与えるのは神様でした。その神様はどこにおられたのでしょうか。悲惨な事件や、大きな災害が起こった時に、「神がいるなら、なぜ助けないのか」と問う人もいます。そのようなところに、人の願いを都合よく叶える偶像の神はいません。けれども私は、イエス・キリストはそこにおられたと信じています。
稀華ちゃんが亡くなったその場におられたのは十字架にかけられたイエス・キリストです。お腹を空かせ、喉の渇きに苦しみ、助けを求めることもできず、何日も泣きながら、大好きなお母さんが帰ってくることを待ち続けて死んでいった稀華ちゃんと共にいることができたのは、十字架のイエスだけだと思うのです。
事件の概要を聞くだけでも胸が引き裂かれるようなその現場にい続けるということは、まさに身が引き裂かれるようなことでしょう。ですから、そこにいたのは栄光に輝く主イエスではありません。裏切られ、罵られ、鞭うたれ、釘で刺され、身を裂かれ、血を流しておられる十字架のイエス・キリストが、そこにおられたのです。
今も生きれおられる主イエスは、今も十字架にかけられておられる方です。彼は人の全ての罪を負い、その罪が生み出すあらゆる痛みも苦しみも共に担いながら、私たちと、またすべての人たちと共に生きておられます。私が逃げ出したことも、忘れてしまったことも、知らずにいたことも、何もできずにいたことも全部含めて、十字架上で罪を負い、赦しを与えようと招いているのが、イエス・キリストです。
そのことで、この事件の悲惨さ、無念さは、少しも和らぎません。むしろ、イエス様の十字架によって、人の罪の姿が露わにされるのです。イエス様の十字架は、この私のために、私に代わってなされたことなのです。
私たちは誰もが神様に創られた尊い存在ですが、同時に誰もが罪人です。私たちが地の塩、世の光とされるのは、私たち自身が優れた者になることによってではなく、イエス・キリストの十字架に出会い、私たちの罪が担われたことを知ることによるのです。地の塩、世の光は、赦された罪人です。
その存在はスポットライトを浴びるような華やかなものではありません。けれどもその存在を通して、イエス・キリストの愛と赦しが伝えられていくのです。それはまるで、水に溶けた塩が料理に味をつけるように、目には見えない仕方かもしれません。あるいはまた、部屋の隅に置かれたともし火が、そこにいる人々をほんのりと照らすような、微かな仕方かもしれません。
この世界で、人の罪は連鎖し、人から人へと受け継がれています。私たちも罪を受け取り、また罪を受け渡してしまうことがあります。けれども、罪とは異なるものを受け取り、また受け渡すことができるように、イエス・キリストが私たちの罪を負い、私たちを赦し、祝福してくださいました。神様の赦しと祝福が、私たちを通して一人でも多くの人に届けられるように、熱心に祈り求めましょう。主イエスの十字架から目を離さずに、その赦しへの感謝と畏れをもって、主と共に歩んでまいりましょう。

"Being salted and given light"
Scripture reading taken from Matthew 5:13~16
We are the salt of the earth and the light of the world
Jesus said, "You are the salt of the earth" and "You are the light of the world." “You” here is referring to the people who gathered to hear the story of Jesus. Not only the disciples but also those who heard Jesus' words and were accepted unconditionally by Jesus are the salt of the earth and light of the world.
"You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world," is the word still being spoken to those who hear the word, know the love of Jesus, and are renewed. As we hear the word of Jesus through the Bible, Jesus is saying to us, "You are the salt of the earth and the light of the world."
Salt and light are indispensable for people to live. Also, "earth" and "world" refer to this world and the people who live in this world. In other words, "you are the salt of the earth and the light of the world" means that you are indispensable to this world and to the human beings who live in this world.
It may be a little confusing and hard to comprehend when being told as such. You may find it an exaggeration to be told that you are indispensable to this world. Indeed, we cannot change the world. The same was true of the Galileans who first heard the words of Jesus.
Jesus understands your confusion. The salt and light that are being stated here are both tiny. Salt is an essential seasoning, but if you add a lot of it, you will not be able to eat it. A suitable amount - a pinch of salt will melt immediately and disappear. If the light is too strong, you can't even open your eyes. The light here is a small light of a fire that dimly illuminates the interior of the house.
Even such a meagre person, through encountering Jesus and being renewed by Jesus becomes necessary for this world. It is not because we have strong power, but because we are salted and lighted by God.
Can we meet others as the salt of the earth, the light of the world?
In this world, people who are regarded as the salt of the earth and the light of the world are needed. That is not only the case in the time of Jesus 2000 years ago, but the same now. Last month, a 3-year-old Kakehashi Noa-chan was found dead in an apartment in Tokyo, and her mother, Saki, was arrested. This incident has always been stuck in my heart.
Ms. Saki was raising Noa as a single mother, and there were people around Noa who really loved her. However, Saki has stopped sending Noa to the nursery school since last year, and she left Noa alone at home while she is away. I don't know why. When Noa died, Saki was away for eight days.
This is a case of child neglect and is not allowed. It seems that some people blame Saki on the internet for saying that she is a “demon mother” or a “trash parent”, but I cannot feel the same as those who blamed Saki. Because she was also the victim of a fierce abuse.
Saki has been in an orphanage since the second grade of elementary school. When she was taken in to be protected, she was thin enough that her ribs and hip bones were visible. There were countless scratches on her hands. It was a wound that her mother made with a kitchen knife. If she was taken in just a little bit later, Saki could have been killed.
I would like to make sure there is no misunderstanding, I am not putting the blame on Saki’s mother in this case. We can only see and hear the surface matters and easily judge people. However, I think that judging others is not the act of the salt of the earth, the light of the world.
If we are told that we are the salt of the earth, the light of the world, and that we are needed in this world, we may have meet Saki and Noa as the salt of the earth, the light of the world. Of course, we could not meet them who lived far away from us, but if we lived nearby, would we have met them as the salt of the earth, the light of the world?
Jesus Christ on the cross
God was the one who gave us saltiness and light. Where was that God? Some people ask when a catastrophic event or major disaster strikes, "If God is there, why is he not helping?" In such events, there is no god of idols who can conveniently fulfil human wishes. But I believe that Jesus Christ was there.
Jesus Christ, who was crucified, was at the place where Noa died. The one who was there with Noa who was hungry, thirsty, unable to seek help, crying for days, ended up dying waiting for her beloved mom to come home, was the crucified Jesus and no one else.
Just listening to what happen is enough to break one’s heart, how much more painful it is to be there at the incident. It was not the Lord Jesus, basking in glory, that was there. It was the Jesus Christ that on the cross, betrayed, cursed, whipping, nailed, torn, and shed, who was at beside Noa.
The Lord Jesus, who is alive, is still on the cross. He bears all the sins of man and bears all the pain and suffering that sin causes, and lives with us and with everyone. In the times we ran away, forgotten, are unaware or helpless, Jesus Christ has always been inviting us to forgiveness and bearing our sins at the cross.
Despite that, the misery and regret of this incident will not be alleviated. Rather, Jesus' cross reveals the sin of a person. That Jesus was on the cross for me on my behalf.
We are all precious beings created by God, but at the same time we are all sinners. It is not by our own excellence that we are made the salt of the earth, the light of the world, but because we encounter the cross of Jesus Christ and know that our sins were taken. The you and me who are the salt of the earth, the light of the world, is a forgiven sinner.
This position is not as glamorous as one under the spotlight. However, through its existence, the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ is conveyed. It may be as invisible as the salt in the water that seasons a dish. Alternatively, it may be like a lamp placed in the corner of the room that slightly illuminates the people there.
In this world, human sins are chained and passed on from person to person. We may receive sin and may also deliver it. But Jesus Christ has born our sin, forgiven us, and blessed us so that we can receive and deliver something that is different from sin. Let us earnestly pray that God's forgiveness and blessings will reach as many people as possible through us. Keep our eyes on the cross of the Lord Jesus and walk with the Lord with gratitude and fear for his forgiveness.
