注文が多いのは誰？
作家・宮沢賢治の作品の一つに、『注文の多い料理店』というものがあります。――ある二人の若い紳士が、大きな犬二匹を連れて狩りに出かけました。ところが、一匹の獲物も見つからず、案内人とは逸れ、犬は死んでしまいます。これでは大きな損失だと嘆きながら、二人は山を下りようとしますが、帰り道がわかりません。すると突然、山奥に立派な洋館を見つけました。
お腹を空かせた二人が中に入ると、扉の上にこう書いてありました。「当軒は注文の多い料理店ですから、どうかそこはご承知ください」。これは客が多いことだと思って、二人は中へと進んでいきます。すると、「髪をとかして、靴の泥を落としてください」とか、「帽子とコートを脱いで、金属製の物は置いてください」といった次々と指示が出てきます。さらには「牛乳のクリームを体に塗ってください」という指示も出ますが、二人は自分に都合よく解釈して指示に従います。
しかし最後の「体中に塩を揉みこんでください」という指示を見てようやく気付くのです、自分たちが調理をされていたことに。最後の扉の向こうからは、二人を食べようとしている化け猫の声が聞こえてきて、二人はガタガタ震えだします。
もうダメだと思ったその時、連れてきた二匹の犬が飛び込んできて、洋館は消えてなくなり、逸れた案内人もやって来て、無事に帰ることができました。けれども、あまりの恐怖でくしゃくしゃになった顔は、元には戻りませんでした――、という物語です。
私たちは色々な注文をすることができる世界にいます。特にインターネットを使えば、世界中からありとあらゆる物やサービスを手に入れることができるようです。その一方で、世の中がどこに向かっているのかわからず、自分の進む方向もわからなくなることがあります。多くの物を得ているようで、しかし得ようとしたものを掴めないこともあります。
もしかしたら、この物語のように、たくさんの注文を受けているのは、私たちの方かもしれません。競争社会のレールを走らされ、受験戦争を戦わされ、成果を求められ続けます。必要とされる資格や能力のメニュー表は盛りだくさん。学校や職場だけではなく、家庭の中のことまで、求めてもいないのに、これが必要だという注文を見せられることもあります。
ふと気が付くと、何かに追い詰められているような気持ちになります。色々と注文したはずなのに、豊かになった実感はなく、むしろ一部の人たちに多くのものが集中し、格差が拡大している現実があります。今、誰かからの注文に振り回されながら、追い詰められ、思い悩まされることが、起こりがちなのかもしれません。
思い悩みの原因
イエス様は「思い悩むな」と語られました。そのとき、イエス様の目の前には、ガリラヤ地方に住んでいた人たちがいました。彼ら・彼女らには、「何を食べようか」「何を飲もうか」「何を着ようか」という思い悩みがありました。なぜなら、ガリラヤの人たちは日々の必要が満たされない状況に追い込まれていたからです。
昔からそうだったわけではありません。ガリラヤは肥沃な地域でしたので、ガリラヤの人たちは必要な食料を十分に得ることができました。数百人くらいの小さな村を作り、互いに助け合い、共に神様を礼拝しながら生きてきました。
けれどもガリラヤの人たちの生活の基盤は、権力者や大富豪によって壊されました。土地が買い取られ、収穫の何割もが取り上げられるようになったからです。「何を食べようか」「何を飲もうか」「何を着ようか」というのは、どうしたら家族と共に生きていくことができるだろうか、という切迫した思い悩みであったのです。
その思い悩みの中で、彼ら・彼女らは自分の命と体が誰のものであり、どのような価値や尊厳を持っているのか、ということを見失ったのかもしれません。働いても、働いても生活は不安定で、いつ転落してもおかしくありません。土地の所有者や雇用者によって、必要な時だけ利用され、不要になったら捨てられてしまう。そのために、まるで自分の命や体が誰かの所有物のように思え、価値のないもののように思わされてしまったのです。そのことは、彼ら・彼女らの思い悩みをより一層、深めていたことでしょう。
命の唯一の主、祝福を与える神
思い悩む人々に向かって、イエス様はこのように語られました。
「自分の命のことで何を食べようか何を飲もうかと、また体のことで何を着ようかと思い悩むな。命は食べ物よりも大切であり、体は衣服よりも大切ではないか。」（６：２５）
命は食べ物よりも大切であり、体は衣服よりも大切である。それは当然のことのように思えますが、このように言われるということは、命や体の大切さがわからなくなっていた、ということでしょう。
その人たちに、イエス様は「空の鳥をよく見なさい」と呼びかけます。鳥は畑で労働をするわけではありませんが、神様はその鳥を養い、その命を大切にしてくださいます。労働しなければ価値がないと思い込まされていた人たちに、イエス様は、あなたたちはあの鳥よりも価値あるものだと言います。それはつまり、神様があなたたちの命を大切なものだと言い、あなたたちを養ってくださる、ということです。
人の命は神様が与えたものであり、主ご自身を差し出してでも救おうとするほどに大切なものです。命を支配するのも、その価値を決めるのも人間ではありません。それは権力者でもなければ、大富豪でもありません。人の命は主のものです。誰かがあなたをまるで自分の所有物であるかのように扱ったとしても、あなたの命は誰の手にもありません。ただ唯一、神様だけが命の主なのです。
さらにイエス様は、「衣服のことで思い悩むな」と呼びかけます。野の花は、家庭での労働をするわけではありません。それでも神様はその花の一つでも、繁栄を極めたソロモン王よりも美しく装ってくださいます。ましてあなたがたには、神様がなおさら装ってくださり、祝福してくださるのです。ここで挙げられた家庭での労働は女性たちの働きとされていましたので、これは特に女性たちに向けて告げられた祝福の約束でしょう。
女性たちは、男性よりも尊厳を奪われて、体は危険に晒されていました。家庭が貧しくなれば、まず奴隷として出されるのは娘たちでした。女性には社会的な地位を持つことも認められなかったので、生きるために身売りせざるを得ない女性たちもいました。力を持つ男性からの性暴力も珍しいことではありませんでした。
貧しさに加えて、女性差別が根底にある社会の中で、イエス様は何重にも尊厳を奪われた女性たちに向かって、神様があなたがたを誰よりも装ってくださると告げました。この世の誰もあなたの価値を奪ったり、あなたを貶めたり、あなたの体を汚したりすることはできない。神様があなたを装ってくださるのだから、何を着ようとも、あなたは祝福された存在なのだ、と。
人ではなく、主にのみ従う
イエス様は再び、「『何を食べようか』『何を飲もうか』『何を着ようか』と言って、思い悩むな」、と言われます。ただ今度は、命と体とは切り離されたところで、『何を食べようか』『何を飲もうか』『何を着ようか』と思い悩むことが問題にされます。それは異邦人が求めているものだ、とイエス様は言います。
ここでの異邦人とは、神様が命と体の主であることを知らず、自分たちが人の命や体を支配し、利用できると思い上がっている者たちのことでしょう。彼らは自分たちが何を食べ、何を飲み、何を着るかということのために、人の命と体をむさぼります。私たちは、そのような人に支配されてはならないのです。私たちに必要なものを知っているのは、命と体をむさぼる人たちではありません。命と体の創り主である神様が、私たちに必要なものをご存じです。
大切なことは、「何よりもまず、神の国と神の義を求める」ことです。これは、人の支配に生きるか、神様の支配に生きるか、という二者択一の問いです。人が命と体を支配し、その価値を決めることを良しとするのか。それとも神様だけが命の主であり、私たちの命の価値と体の尊厳は神様だけが定めることができると信じるか。そのどちらを選ぶか、ということです。
今日の個所の直前で、イエス様はこのように言っておられました。
「だれも、二人の主人に仕えることはできない。一方を憎んで他方を愛するか、一方に親しんで他方を軽んじるか、どちらかである。あなたがたは、神と富とに仕えることはできない。」（６：２４）
私たちには、人を主人として、人に従って生きるのか、それとも神様を主として、イエス・キリストに従って生きるのか、そのどちらかしか選択肢はありません。どちらも選ぶことは不可能なのです。
イエス様は、何よりもまず神の国と神の義を求めなさい、と言われました。神様こそ命の主であり、私の命を大切に思い、養ってくださる方、神様こそ体の創り主であり、私を装い、祝福してくださる方。そのことを信じ、あなたも神様に命と尊厳を既に与えられた者として生きるように、とイエス様は招いておられます。それはこれまでの生き方を変え、新しい生命に生きることです。
思い悩みが一切なくなるわけではありません。人生における苦労は伴います。けれども、「明日のことまで思い悩むな。明日のことは明日自らが思い悩む。その日の苦労は、その日だけで十分である」（６：３４）とイエス様は言ってくださいます。私たちが苦労し、思い悩むのは、今日、私が負うべきものだけで十分だ、と。人の命や体を利用しようとする者たちの思いに振り回されて、思い悩むことはないのだ、と。
キリスト者は、私たちのために――他ならぬこの私のために――十字架にかかり、命を差し出された主イエス・キリストにのみ従います。人を――それが誰であっても――私の主とはせず、ただ神の子イエス・キリストだけを主と信じ、従っていくのです。人を支配しようとする言葉ではなく、祝福を与える神の言葉に従って生きるのです。

"Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness"
Scripture reading taken from Matthew 6:25~34
Who has a lot of orders?
One of the works of the writer, Kenji Miyazawa, is “The restaurant of many orders”. --Two young gentlemen went hunting with two big dogs. However, not a single prey was found, and they had strayed from their guide, and their dogs fell dead. Lamenting the big loss, they try to go down the mountain, but they don't know how to get back. Then suddenly, they found a fine Western-style building in the mountains.
When the two hungry men went inside, it was written on the door. "We hope that you will appreciate that this is a restaurant with many orders." Thinking that this meant there were a lot of customers, they go inside. As they went pass that door, they were met with door with further instructions such as "Please comb your hair and remove the mud from your shoes" or "Take off your hat and coat and any metal object on your body." There are also instructions to "spread cream over their body," but the two interpret it in their own convenience and followed the instructions.
However, when they finally noticed the last instruction, "Please rub the salt well all over your body," they became aware that they were the ones that were being cooked. From behind the last door, they heard the voice of a ghost cat trying to eat them, and they started shaking.
When they thought that it was hopeless, the two dogs burst into the room, the Western-style house disappeared, and the separated guide also appeared, and they were able to return safely. However, their face that was crumpled like wastepaper from much fear did not return to normal –this is the story of the restaurant of many orders.
We are in a world where we can make various orders. In particular, using the Internet, you can get all kinds of goods and services from all over the world. On the other hand, sometimes you don't know where the world is heading, and you don't know where you are going. It seems that you are getting a lot of things, but sometimes you can't grab what you were trying to get.
Maybe we are the ones who receive many orders, as in this story. We are being made to run in the race made by the competitive society, fighting one another in the form of examination, and continuously seeking results. A long list of menus that shows you the required qualifications and abilities. Sometimes you receive an order which require an ability that is not required of you in school, workplace, or home.
When you suddenly notice it, you will feel like you are being overwhelmed by something. I have been ordered various things, yet I do not feel like I am gaining anything, but rather only a certain group of people are gaining, and the reality is that the gap between that group of people and the other people is widening. Perhaps it is easy to get overwhelmed and anxious while being swayed by someone's order.
Causes of distress
Jesus said, "Do not worry”. At that time, in front of Jesus were people who lived in the Galilee region. They were worried about what to eat, what to drink, and what to wear. Because the people of Galilee were in a situation where their daily needs were not met.
It wasn't always like that. Galilee was a fertile area, so the people of Galilee were able to get enough food. They built a small village consisting of hundreds of people, helped each other, and worshiped God together.
However, the foundations of the lives of the Galilee people were destroyed by powerful people and millionaires. Their land has been bought up and a high percentage of their harvests have been collected as tax and what not. “What to eat,” “what to drink”, “what to wear”, “how can we stay alive with our family” were the urgent concerns of the Galileans.
In their worries, they may have lost sight of who their lives and bodies belong to and what value and dignity they have. No matter how much they work, their life is unstable, and they can fall at any time. They are used by landowners and employers only when needed and is thrown away when they are no longer needed. Because of that, their life and body seemed to belong to someone else's property and seemed to be worthless. That depressing though would have worsened their worries.
The only Lord over life, the God that blesses
In this way, Jesus spoke to those who were worried.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”(6:25)
LIFE is more important than food, and the body is more important than clothes. That sounds like a fact that everyone knows, but being told in this way probably meant that they had gradually forgotten importance of life and body.
Jesus calls to those people, "Look closely at the birds in the sky." Birds do not work in the fields, but God nourishes them and values their lives. To those who were convinced that they are worthless if they do not work, Jesus says that you are more valuable than those birds. That is, God says that your lives are important, and that God will feed you.
The life of a person is given by God, and it is so important that God sent Jesus to save the life of people. It is not humans who control life or determine its value. It is neither a powerhouse nor a millionaire. Human life belongs to the Lord. Even if someone treats you as if you belong to them, your life is not in their hands. Only God is the Lord of life.
In addition, Jesus said, "Do not worry about clothes." Wildflowers do not work at home. Still, God will dress even more beautifully than one of the most prosperous man, King Solomon. More than the wildflowers, God gives you even more blessing. This promise of blessing is especially for women, as the domestic work mentioned here was supposedly done by women at that time.
Women were deprived of their dignity more than men, and their bodies were at danger. When the family became poor, the daughters were the first to be sold as slaves. Some women were forced to sell themselves to live because women were not allowed to have a social status. Sexual violence from powerful men was not uncommon.
In a society in which discrimination against women is rooted in addition to poverty, Jesus told women who were repeatedly deprived of dignity that God would dress you more beautifully than anyone. It was No one in the world can deprive you of your worth, hurt you, or taint your body. God will dress you, so no matter what you wear, you are a blessed being.
Follow only the Lord, not people
Again, Jesus said, "Don't worry about what to eat, what to drink, and what to wear." However, this time, when life and body are separated, the worrying about what to eat, what to drink, and what to wear is the problem. Jesus says it's what the pagans seek.
The Gentiles here are those who do not know that God is the Lord of life and body and are confident that they can control and use the life and body of a person. To solve the question of what to eat, what to drink and what to wear, they devour another person's life and body. We must not be ruled by such a person. It is not the people who devour life and body who know what we need. God, the creator of life and body, knows what we need.
The important thing is, first and foremost, seek the kingdom of God and the righteousness of God." This is a question of whether to live under the rule of man or under the rule of God. Is it okay for a person to control life and body and determine their value? Or do you believe that God alone is the Lord of life and that God alone can determine the value of our lives and the dignity of our bodies? Which one would you choose?
In Matthew 6:24, Jesus said this,
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." (6:24)
We have only one choice, whether to live with the person as the master and follow the person, or with God as the main subject and follow Jesus Christ. It is impossible to choose both.
Jesus said, seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. God is the Lord of life, who cares and feeds my life, God is the creator of the body, who dresses and blesses me. Believing in that, Jesus invites you to live as a person who has already been given life and dignity to God. It is to change the way we live and live in a new life.
It doesn't mean that all your worries are gone. There are hardships in life. However, Jesus said, "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." (6:34). All we have to worry about is the cross we need to carry today. He said we do not need to concern ourselves with the desires of those who try to use the lives and bodies of others.
Christians obey only the Lord Jesus Christ, who was crucified and offered his life for us, especially for me. I do not believe in the anybody else no matter who that person is, and only believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God. We live according to the word of God that gives us blessing, not the word that tries to control people.
