捨てる場所としての荒れ野
新型コロナウイルス感染拡大を受けて、自宅で過ごす時間が増えている方が多いでしょう。出かけることも、人と会うことも避けている中で、家の片づけをされる方もおられます。これまで忙しさの中で手を付けられなかったところの大掃除をする機会にしておられるわけです。
物だけでなく、私たちはこの期間、何かを手放したり、捨てたりしながら過ごしています。その中には一時的に手放していることもありますが、中にはこれを機会に捨ててしまおうとすることもあるでしょう。
金沢でも緊急事態宣言が解除されましたが、すぐにすべてが元通りになるわけではありません。これまでと全く同じ日常になるわけではなく、色々なことが変わっていくでしょう。その中で、私たちが手放してはいけないもの・形が変わっても残そうとするものがあります。その一方で、手放すもの・捨てるべきものがあるとすれば、それは何でしょうか。
イエス様は、福音を宣べ伝える前に、荒れ野で誘惑を受けられました。そこで受けられた誘惑は、イスラエルの民がエジプトから脱出し、荒れ野での４０年間を過ごす中で経験し、そして捕らわれた誘惑でした。
荒れ野は砂と岩に覆われた場所であり、禁欲と不自由さを強いられる場所でした。人が住むには適さず、淋しいところでした。ただ、そこは神様と出会う場所でもありました。人は自分の住む町を離れ、物も事柄もないさびしい所で祈り、神様の御言葉を聞こうとしました。荒れ野は自分の持っているもの、あるいは捕らわれているものを捨てるところであり、捨てるために出て行く場所でもありました。
イエス様がその荒れ野で誘惑を受けられたとき、イエス様は何を捨てたのでしょうか。そこれ受けられた誘惑との関係から考えてみましょう。
パンだけでなく、神の言葉で生きる
イエス様が荒れ野で40日間、昼も夜も断食をした後、空腹を感じた時に誘惑する者がやって来ました。それは悪魔、あるいはサタンと呼ばれています。悪魔はイエス様を誘惑し、自分の側へと取り込もうと試みます。
最初の誘惑は、イエス様の感じていた空腹に付け込もうとするものです。悪魔は荒れ野に転がっている石を指して、イエス様に言いました。
「（あなたが）神の子なら、これらの石がパンになるように命じたらどうだ。」（マタイ4:3）
……神の子ならそのくらいのことは簡単にできるはず。町までパンを買いに行くのを待つ必要はない、今すぐその力を使って自分の欲求を満たせばいい。そうすることで、あなたが力ある者だということもわかるのだから。……
もっともな言い分にも聞こえますが、これは悪魔の誘惑です。それは自分の欲求を、今すぐ、完全に満たすために、力を乱用することへと誘うことでした。イエス様はこの誘惑に対して、聖書の言葉をもって対抗しました。
「人はパンだけで生きるものではない。神の口から出る一つ一つの言葉で生きる。」（マタイ4:3／申命記8:3）
生きるためにパン（食事）が必要なことは当然です。ここでは食事のことが取り上げられますが、衣・食・住など、人間が生きるために必要なものに置き換えてもいいでしょう。それらの物が必要なことは確かなことですが、人はそれだけで生きるものではありません。
人間にはパンが必要だ。しかし、それだけでなく、「神の口から出る一つ一つの言葉で生きるのだ」、とイエス様は答えられました。神の口から出る一つ一つの言葉――それは聖書の言葉のことでもありますが、聖書だけではなく、それぞれの生活に関わっておられる神様の意志を指しています。聖書で明らかにされたように、私たちを愛し、その生命を大切にして、個々の人生を正しく導こうとされる神様の意志が、私たちを生かします。なぜなら、神様の意志は、私たちが生きるために必要なことを私たちに教え示そうとするものだからです。
主を試してはならないし、試す必要もない
次に悪魔はイエス様をエルサレムへ連れて行き、神殿の屋根の端に立たせて、言いました。
「（あなたが）神の子なら、飛び降りたらどうだ。」（マタイ4:6）
悪魔はさらに詩編の言葉を利用して、「たとえここから飛び降りても、神様が天使たちに命じてあなたの足を支えるから大丈夫。むしろそうすることで、あなたが神の子であることが証明されるのだ」、と誘惑しました。
それは自分の信仰で、あるいはその行いで、神様に奇跡を起こさせようとすることでしょう。もしそうならないなら、神を信じないと言っているようにも受け取れます。自分の力で奇跡を起こすことを拒否したイエス様に対して、今度は神様を利用して奇跡を起こすようにと促したのです。
これに対してイエス様は、再び聖書の言葉をもって対抗しました。
「あなたの神である主を試してはならない。」（マタイ4:7／申命記6:16）
イエス様は自分の力を誇示することを拒否するだけでなく、神様の力を利用することも拒否しました。他者の力・神様の力を利用して、自分を強くみせたり、欲求を満たそうとしたりすることを、イエス様はしなかったのです。
主を試してはならない、という答えは、試す必要がないということも含んでいるでしょう。神様が私たちを助けてくださることは信頼できることです。それが奇跡的な仕方であるのか、予想外の出来事であるのか、いずれにしても、神様は私たちに手を差し伸べ、道を開き、出会いを起こしてくださいます。それがいつになるか、どのような方法になるかわかりませんが、神様が私のことを覚え、私を支えようとしておられることは、今も、これからも変わることがないのです。
神のみに仕えるのが神の子
最後に悪魔はイエス様を非常に高い山に連れて行き、世界の国々の繁栄を見させました。そして悪魔は再びイエス様を誘惑します。
「もし、ひれ伏してわたし（悪魔）を拝むなら、これをみんな与えよう」（マタイ4:9）
自分の力を乱用することも、神様の力を利用することも拒否したところで、最後になされた誘惑は、神ではないものにひれ伏し、その力を手に入れようとすることでした。
悪魔にひれ伏すという光景を思い浮かべると、そんなことをするわけがないと答えられます。けれども、この誘惑は強烈で、今の人類社会を飲み込んでいるかもしれません。科学の力、経済の力、軍事の力、その他にも色々な力が私たちを誘惑しています。あれもこれもしたい。思い通りにならせたい。今すぐ欲望を満たしたい。自分の力を誇りたい。隣の人よりも上に立ちたい。そんな誘惑に飲み込まれる時、私たちは悪魔にひれ伏しています。
この誘惑に対して、イエスは非常に厳しい言葉で応じました。
「退け、サタン！『あなたの神である主を拝み、ただ主に仕えよ』、と書いてある。」
（マタイ4:10／申命記6:13）
主を拝み、主に仕えることで、イエス様は悪魔の誘惑を退けました。ただ主に仕えるということは、他のことに耳を閉ざすことではありません。そうではなく、他のいかなる力にもひれ伏さず、その力を絶対的なものとしない、ということでしょう。
イエス様は悪魔の誘惑に取り込まれることではなく、誘惑を退けることで神の子であることを証明されました。神の子の証明は、奇跡を起こす力を示すことや、大きな力を欲することでなされるのではありません。むしろ、私たちと同じように誘惑を受ける一人の人間として生きながら、その弱さの中で神の言葉・神の意志によって生き、神を利用せず、神のみに仕えることこそ、神の子であることの証明でした。神の子イエスは、神を愛し、人を愛し、そのために弱さを担い、苦しみを受ける道を歩まれる方なのです。
誘惑を受け、打ち勝ったイエスを見る
先日の新聞で「アパレル 大量生産・廃棄に限界」という記事を見ました。有名アパレルメーカーの経営破綻を受けた記事ですが、その中で日本では年間１０億着を超える新品の服が捨てられているとあり、とても驚きました。１０億着もの衣服を作るために大量の資源やエネルギーを使いながら、それを一度も使うことなく、さらに大量のエネルギーを消費して廃棄している、というのです。
経営破綻の原因には、コロナの影響で百貨店も閉まっていることがありますが、改めて、人類が捨てていいもの・捨てるべきものは何だろうかと考えさせられました。人々の欲望をあおり、大量消費し続けてきたことは、悪魔の誘惑に取り込まれていたのではないかと思います。
イエス様は悪魔の誘惑を退けましたが、私たちはイエス様のように強くはなく、誘惑に負けやすい。負けたことに気付いていたらまだましですが、悪魔にひれ伏していることに気付くことさえ当たり前ではありません。
イエス様は誘惑を受けられながら、誘惑に陥りませんでした。そのイエス様は、私たちが誘惑に陥るときにも、私たちと共にいて、誘惑する者に対抗しておられます。私の力で、私の意志だけで誘惑に勝たなければならないのではない。私の力や意志は誘惑に負けるかもしれない。けれども、誘惑に打ち勝ったイエス様がいる。そのイエス様の姿を見、その言葉を私も聞くことで、誘惑に立ち向かうことができるのではないでしょうか。
神様は私たちをどこまでも愛し、私たちが生きることを真剣に考えておられます。けれども神様は私たちの欲望を願うままに叶えてくれる方ではありません。むしろ、欲望に捕らわれ、悪魔の誘惑に負けるときには、厳しく迫り、捨てることを求められます。
捨てることは単に無くすことではありません。捨てるべきものを捨てられたとき、思いもよらぬ仕方で恵みを増し加えられることを、聖書の物語は語り継いできました。誘惑を受け、誘惑に打ち勝った神の子イエス様の姿から、またその言葉から、何を捨てるべきなのか、私たちは問われているのです。

"What should we discard"

Wilderness is a place where we throw things away
Many people will spend more time at home due to the spread of new coronavirus infection. While avoiding going out and meeting people, some people take the opportunity to clean up their homes. I have been given the opportunity to do a general cleaning in which I couldn’t do if it were my usual schedule.
Not just limited to physical things, we spend this period throwing away or letting go of something. Some of them may be just temporary, while others may be permanent.
Though in Kanazawa the emergency declaration was lifted, not everything will be restored back to normal so soon. It will not be exactly the same as before, various things will change. Among them, there are things that we should not let go of, and things that we try to keep even if the situation changes. On the other hand, if there is something we should let go or throw away, what would it be?
Jesus was tempted in the wilderness before he began preaching the Gospel. The temptations received there were the temptations experienced by the captured Israelites as they escaped from Egypt and spent 40 years in the wilderness.
The wilderness was a place covered with sand and rocks and was a place of abstinence and inconvenience. It was a poor place for people to live in. However, it was also a place to meet God. People left the town where they lived, prayed in a lonely place without things and things, and tried to hear the word of God. The wilderness is a place to get rid of what we have or what we are captured by, and is also the place we go if we have things we want to get rid of.
What did Jesus abandon when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness? Let's think about the relationship of the things he abandoned and the temptations he received.
Live not on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God
After Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights, a temptation came when he felt hungry. It is called the devil, or Satan. The devil seduces Jesus and attempts to capture him.
The first temptation is a temptation that included the hunger that Jesus felt. The devil pointed to the stone lying in the wilderness and told Jesus,” If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” (Matthew 4: 3).
............ The Son of God should be able to do that easily. You don't have to wait till you get to a town to buy bread, just use your power and satisfy your needs. By doing so, you can also confirm that you are indeed powerful. ......
Sounds reasonable, but this is the temptation of the devil. It was to invite him to abuse his power to fully satisfy his desires. Jesus countered this temptation with the words of the Bible, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’.” (Matthew 4:3)
It is natural that bread is needed for us to live. Food was used as an example here, but you can replace it with what you need to live, such as clothing, food, and housing. It is true that those things are necessary, but people do not live on those necessities alone.
Humans need bread. But not only that, Jesus replied, "Living on every word that comes from the mouth of God." Each word that comes out of the mouth of God-which is also the word of the Bible, refers not only to the Bible but to the will of God in each life as well. As revealed in the Bible, God's will is to love us, cherish our lives, and guide us correctly. That is what saves us. Because God's will is to teach us what we need to live.
Do not put the Lord your God to the test as there is no need for it
Next, the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem, stood on the edge of the temple roof, and said.
"If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down." (Matthew 4: 6).
The devil also uses the words of the Psalms to say, "Even if you jump from here, it's okay because God commands the angels to support your feet. Rather, you can prove that you are the Son of God by doing so. "
It is as if through your faith or your action, you are trying to make God create a miracle. And if that miracle doesn’t happen, it will be as if you don't believe in God. He urged Jesus, who refused to create a miracle with his own power, to use God’s power this time to make a miracle.
Against this, Jesus again opposed with the Bible's words.
“Do not put the Lord your God to the test” (Matthew 4: 7 / Deuteronomy 6:16).
Jesus not only refused to show off his power, but also refused to use the power of God. Jesus did not use the power of others or the power of God to prove his strength nor to satisfy his needs.
The reply that Jesus gave, that you shouldn't test the Lord may also mean that you don't need to. We can have faith that God helps us. Whether it is miraculous or unexpected, God will reach out to us, open the way and create encounters. I don't know when it will happen or how it will happen, but God remembers me and tries to support me will remain the same now and in the future.
The Son of God serves only God
Finally, the devil took Jesus to a very high mountain and let him see the prosperity of the nations of the world, and again seduces Jesus.
"All this I will give you, if you will bow down and worship me (the devil), " (Matthew 4: 9)
When Jesus refused to abuse his own power or use God's power, the last temptation was to bow down to something that was not God and try to obtain his desires.
When you imagine the scene of prostrating to the devil, you can say that you won’t do that. However, this temptation is so intense that it may swallow the present human society. The power of science, the power of economics, the power of military forces, and many others are tempting us. I want to do that too. I want you to do what I want. I want to satisfy my desires right now. I want to flaunt my power. I want to stand above the person next to me. When we are swallowed by such temptation, we are prostrating to the devil.
In response to this temptation, Jesus responded severe words.
It says, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’" (Matthew 4: 10 / Deuteronomy 6:13).
By worshiping and serving the Lord, Jesus rejected the temptation of the devil. Just serving the Lord does not mean keeping your ears closed to other things. Instead, it would be to not prostrate to any other force and treat that force as an absolute.
Jesus proved himself to be the Son of God by rejecting the temptation rather than being taken in by the temptation of the devil. Proof of being the Son of God is not showed through displaying miraculous power or to desire great power. Rather, living as one human being who is tempted like us, living in its weakness according to the word of God and the will of God, and not using God but serving only God. That is the Son of God. It was proof that The Son of God, Jesus, is the one who loves God, loves others, bears their weaknesses, and suffers for them.
Looking at Jesus who overcame the temptations
I saw an article in a newspaper the other day, "Apparels! The extremes of mass producing and disposals" It was an article about the management failure of a famous apparel maker, and I was very surprised that more than 1 billion new clothes were thrown away in Japan each year. It said that a large amount of resources and energy to make 1 billion clothes and consumed a large amount of energy dispose it without ever using it.
One of the causes of the bankruptcy is that department stores are closed due to the influence of corona, but it made me wonder again what can be discarded and what should be disposed. I think that the continuation of mass consumption is attributed not only by people’s desires, but also the devil’s temptation.
Jesus rejected the temptation of the devil, but we are not as strong as Jesus, and it is easy to lose to the temptation. It's not so bad if you realize that you've lost to temptation but prostrating to the devil is not something obvious and some may be prostrating unknowingly.
Jesus was tempted but did not fall into temptation. Jesus is with us, even when we fall into temptation, he is fighting with us against the tempters. It is not necessary for us to overcome our temptations by our own will. Our willpower and strength may give in to temptation. However, there is Jesus who has overcome the temptation. By seeing the image of Jesus and listening to his words, we will feel that we will be able to confront the temptation. God loves us forever and is serious about our lives. However, God is not someone that fulfils our desires. Rather, when we are caught in our desire and lose to the temptation of the devil, we are urged to abandon God.
Discarding is not just simply losing. The Bible story tells us that when we throw away what we should throw away, we can add grace in unexpected ways. From the figure of Jesus, the son of God who has been tempted and has overcome the temptation, and from his words, we are being asked what we should discard.
