日常の中での出来事
この個所では、イエス様が湖の上を歩いたことが書かれています。このような聖書の個所を読むと、「それは事実であったのか、科学的にあり得ることなのか」、という疑問をもたれるかもしれません。けれども、その問いの結論は、いずれにしても私たちにほとんど関わりがありません。それよりは、この出来事におけるイエス様の弟子たちの行動や心情に注目する方が、私たちにとって重要な意味をもつでしょう。
この出来事の直前では、イエス様が五千人にパンと魚を分け与える奇跡を起こされました。男性だけでも五千人ですから、女性や子どもを含めると一万人以上もの大群衆をイエス様が満腹させたわけです。そこに集まった人たちはもちろんのこと、弟子たちも驚きました。
それからすぐ、イエス様は急かすようにして弟子たちを舟に乗せ、一足先に向こう岸へと向かわせました。ご自身は集まった群衆を解散させ、祈るために一人で山へと登りました。ですから、弟子たちの乗った舟には、イエス様が乗っていなかったのです。なぜそうされたのか、弟子たちにもわからなかったかもしれません。それでも、彼らは向こう岸へと漕ぎ出して行きました。
舟に乗り込んだときには夕方に近づいていたので、間もなく辺りは暗くなりました。それでも、弟子たちに不安はなかったでしょう。なぜなら、弟子たちの中にはこの湖でずっと漁をしてきた漁師たちがいたからです。彼らはいつも夜中に漁をしていたので、真っ暗な夜に舟を出すことにも慣れています。彼らはいつもの場所で、いつものように舟を漕ぎだしたのです。
私たちにとって、夜の湖で舟に乗るということは非日常的ですが、弟子たちにとっては日常の中の出来事でした。ですから、私たちがこの箇所を読むときには、それぞれの日常の生活に置き換えて読む必要があるでしょう。これは、私たちの日常の中で起こる、イエス様との出会いの出来事です。
嵐の中、愛する弟子たちのもとへ
いつもの場所で、いつものように舟を漕ぎだした弟子たちでしたが、この日は順調には行きませんでした。夜の間に強い逆風が吹き始めたのです。彼らは波に悩まされ、陸から数百メートルのところで前に進むことができなくなってしまいました。
「悩ます」という言葉は、ギリシア語で“βασανίζω”と言って、「苦しめる、痛める、悩ます」という意味をもっています。波に悩まされる弟子たちは、それぞれの日常の中で逆風に吹かれて苦しむ悩む私たちの姿を映し出します。いつもの生活の中に、突然、逆風が吹き始め、前に進めなくなってしまう。これまで通りにはできなくなり、先を見通すことも難しく、かといって別の道へと進むこともできない中で、苦しみ悩んでいるときの姿が、この弟子たちの姿と重なるのです。
そこへイエス様が歩いて来られました。時は夜が明けるころ。それは救いの到来を期待させる時刻、空の端が明るくなり始め、闇の中に光が差し込むときです。
イエス様が歩いて来られたのは、まだ暗く、逆風が吹いている、波の高い湖の上です。その波は弟子たちを襲い、苦しめ悩ますものでした。イエス様はその波を足で踏みしめて、その波の中で動けなくなっている弟子たちへ向かって行きました。弟子たちは舟に乗っていましたが、イエス様は歩いて行きました。
イエス様が湖の上を歩かれたのは、ご自身の力を見せびらかすためではありません。弟子たちの前で奇跡を起こして、ご自身が神の子であることを信じさせようとしたわけではないのです。そうではなく、愛する弟子たちが闇の中で苦しみ悩まされているから、弟子たちのもとへ向かって行ったのです。
このイエス様の姿は、力を誇る者ではなく、むしろ十字架に向かって歩む姿と重なります。イエス様は私たちをどこまでも愛し抜かれ、十字架に至るまで歩み続け、ご自身をも差し出さます。そのイエス様は嵐の中で苦しみ悩む私たちのもとへ向かって来られる方なのです。
孤立という弱さ
一方の弟子たちは、情けない姿をさらしています。彼らは湖の上を歩く人影がイエス様だとは気づかず、「幽霊だ！」と言っておびえ、恐怖のあまり叫び声をあげました。イエス様に「安心しなさ。わたしだ。恐れることはない。」と声をかけられて、彼らはようやく安心することができました。
弟子の一人であるペトロは、「主よ、あなたでしたら、わたしに命じて、水の上を歩いてそちらに行かせてください。」と言いました。彼は湖の上に立つイエス様を見て強気になったのかもしれません。イエス様に会えた喜びも重なって、すぐにでもイエス様のもとへ行きたいと思い、ペトロはそちらに行かせてほしいと頼みました。
イエス様に招かれ、ペトロは舟から降り、イエス様に向かって水の上を歩きだします。一歩、二歩と、イエス様に目を向けて歩いていくペトロは、イエス様に目を向けているときには、波のことを忘れて進むことができました。
ところが強い風が吹くと、彼はイエス様から目を離し、足元の波に目を取られます。すると忘れていた恐怖がよみがえり、たちまち沈みそうになったので、彼はイエス様に助けを求めました。イエス様はすぐに手を伸ばしてペトロの手をつかんで引き上げました。
ペトロも、他の弟子たちも、何と情けないことでしょう。彼らは闇の中を漕ぎだしたときも、逆風に悩まされているときも、湖の上へと歩み出したときも、強くあろうとしました。自分たちの力で進み、自分の足で立とうとしました。そうできると思ったし、イエス様の弟子は強くあるべきだと思ったのかもしれません。
ところが、彼らは自分が思ったほど強くありませんでした。逆風の中で思い通りに事を進めることができなくなり、振り絞った勇気は風に吹かれて消えてしまいました。恐怖のあまりに叫び出し、沈みかけてしまいました。
その弱さは、孤立を深めるときに現われます。弟子たちの乗った舟にはイエス様が乗っていなかったので、苦しみ悩むときにも孤立していたように思えます。彼らが自分の力を信じていたのか、自分たちで解決しなければならないと思っていたのか。いずれにしても、イエス様と離れ、孤立しているときに、彼らは逆風の中で恐れに捕らえられています。
自分の弱さを隠し、強くなければならないと思い込み、助けを求められずに孤立してしまうという過ちは誰にでも起こり得ます。私はこの過ちを犯しやすいので、一人で苦しみ悩んでしまいがちです。今、コロナウイルスの影響で、この弟子たちと同じように日常に逆風が吹き、計画が進まず、孤立して、恐れに捕らわれる、ということが特に起こりやすくなっています。
情けない姿を見せるペトロは、私たちの姿でもあります。ただ、彼はここで信仰の模範も示しています。それは、助けを求めることです。彼は水の上に立ち、沈みかけたときに、「主よ、助けてください」と叫びました。彼は助けを求めていいこと、助けを求めるべき方を知っていました。イエス様を見て、彼がそのことを思い出し、助けを求めて叫んだことは、私たちも見習うことができるのです。
助けを求めて叫ぶ
このとき、イエス様はペトロに向かって「信仰の薄い者よ、なぜ疑ったのか。」と言いました。それは、疑う者に信仰がないと言っているのではありません。信仰はあるけれども、自分の信仰によって強くなれず、恐れや不安に捕らわれてしまうような弱さがあるペトロを叱咤激励する言葉です。それは非難ではなく、励まし力づける言葉です。
福音書において、ペトロや弟子たちの信仰は小さなものでした。彼らは何度も恐れ、何度もつまずきました。イエス様の言葉を受け止められず、何度も奇跡に立ち会いましたが、信仰よりも自分たちの力を求めていたこともありました。信仰とは、そう簡単に大きく、強くなるものではないのです。
それでも、そこに信仰はあります。たとえ小さな信仰であっても、そこにあるのです。信仰とは固まったものではありません。それはいつも動いており、大きくなったり、小さくなったりするものです。信仰はそれを働かせることで大きくなり、寝かせていると小さくなります。例えば、自粛生活の中で落ちた筋力を、体操をして鍛えるように、信仰も小さくなっているなら、また働かせればいいのです。
その一つの方法は、イエス様に助けを求めることを諦めないことです。私も、先の見えない闇の中で逆風に吹かれて悩まされ、勇気を出して踏み出しても恐れに捕らわれて沈みはじめてしまうような、信仰の薄い者です。その信仰が、イエス様に呼びかけられ、手を取って立たされるという、助けられた経験によって強くされるのです。
弟子たちが恐怖を感じたとき、イエス様はすぐに声をかけ、すぐに手を伸ばされました。すぐに声をかけ、手を伸ばすことができたのは、イエス様がそれだけ近くに来ておられたからです。私たちが逆風の中で波に悩まされ、孤立していると思っていても、イエス様はその波の中、私たちに声も手も届くところにまで歩いて来られるのです。
自分の力で乗り越えることもあります。自分の信仰によって支えられることもあります。けれども、自分だけを信頼し、試練に耐えることが求められているわけではありません。そうではなく、助けを求めて叫ぶべきかたを知っていること、助けを求めることができることも大切なことなのです。
私たちの叫びも、イエス様は聞いておられ、手を取って助けてくださいます。その助けは、水の上を歩くような奇跡として起こる時もあれば、人を通して与えられることもあるでしょう。信仰は助けを求め、それに応えられることで強くなります。そしてイエス様は必ずその求めを聞いてくださいます。ペトロだけでなく、聖書の多くの人が神様に助けを求めました。私たちも助けを「主よ、助けてください」と叫ぶことが赦されているのです。

"Can you cry out for help?"

Events in our everyday life
In this passage, it is written that Jesus walked on the lake. When you read such Bible passages, you may be wondering, "Is that true or scientifically possible?" But the answer to that question has little to do with us anyway. Rather, it is more important for us to pay attention to the actions and sentiment of Jesus' disciples in this event.
Just before this event, Jesus created a miracle of providing bread and fish for 5000 people. Since it is recorded that there are 5,000 men alone, including women and children, Jesus fed a large crowd of more than 10,000 people. Not only the people who gathered there, but the disciples were also surprised.
Immediately after that, Jesus hurried the disciples on to the boat and sent them to the shore on the other side. He disbanded the crowd and went on to climb a mountain alone to pray. Therefore, Jesus was not on the boat that the disciples were on. The disciples may not know why Jesus did it. Still, they rowed to the other side.
It was nearly evening as the disciples got on the boat, so it was getting dark. Even so, the disciples were probably not have been anxious. Because some of the disciples were fishermen who have been fishing in this lake for a long time until recently. They were always fishing in the middle of the night, so they are also used to sailing in the dark nights. They started rowing to the place they used to go all the time in a familiar manner.
For us, riding a boat on the lake at night is extraordinary, but for the disciples, it was an everyday event. Therefore, when we read this passage, we will need to replace it with our daily lives. This is an event of encountering Jesus that occurs in our daily lives.
Into the storm, where his beloved disciples are
The disciples rowed the boat to where they always go to as usual, but things didn't go smoothly this day. A strong headwind began to blow during the night. They were plagued by waves and were unable to move forward any further after advancing hundreds of meters from land.
The word "worry" means "βασανίζω" in Greek and means "to suffer, to hurt, to worry". The disciples annoyed by the waves reflect our anguish as they suffer from the headwinds in their daily lives. Suddenly, headwinds appeared in my daily life, and I can't move forward. The situation of suffering and anxiety overlaps with the appearance of these disciples in the situation where they cannot do as they usually do, it is difficult to see ahead, and they cannot change to another path.
Jesus walked to where they were. It was the break of dawn. It is the time where one expects salvation, when the edge of the sky begins to brighten and the light shines into the darkness.
Jesus walked over the lake when it was still dark and windy with high waves. The waves struck the disciples, causing them distress. Jesus stepped on the wave and went toward the disciples who were stuck in the wave. The disciples were on the boat, but Jesus went there by walking.
Jesus walked on the lake not because he wants to show off his power. He didn't perform miracles in front of his disciples to make them believe that he was the Son of God. Instead, he went to his disciples because his beloved disciples were suffering in the darkness.
This figure of Jesus walking over is not the way someone who is proud of his power is walking, but rather the figure of someone walking toward the cross. Jesus loves us forever, even to the extent of walking to the cross, and even presents himself as a sacrifice. This is the Jesus who will come to us who are suffering in the storm.
The weakness that comes from isolation(solitude)
On the other side, the disciples exposed their shameful side. They were unaware that Jesus was the person walking on the lake, and were terrified and cried out, "It's a ghost!" But Jesus immediately said, "Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.", and the disciples calmed down.
One of his disciples, Peter, said, "Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water." He might have gained courage when he saw Jesus standing on the lake. With the joy of seeing Jesus again, he wanted to go to Jesus as soon as possible, and Peter asked Jesus to call him to go over to his side.
Invited by Jesus, Peter descends from the boat and begins to walk on the water toward Jesus. Step by step Peter walked towards Jesus while keeping his eyes on Jesus. Peter could forget about the waves and proceed when he was looking at Jesus.
However, when a strong wind blows, he took his eyes off Jesus and began to be aware of the waves below his feet. Then, the fear he had forgotten came back to him, and he began to sink, so he turned to Jesus for help. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed Peter's hand and pulled him up.
What a pitiful sight Peter and the other disciples were! They tried to be strong when rowing out in the dark, suffering from headwinds, and stepping out onto the lake. We went on our own and tried to stand on our own feet. They thought they could do that, and that maybe because they are Jesus' disciple, they should be strong.
But they weren't as strong as they thought. In the headwind, the disciples couldn't do what they wanted, and the courage they had quickly disappeared in the wind. They were screaming out of fear and were sinking.
That weakness appears when the more we isolate ourselves. Jesus was not in the boat the disciples were on, it was as if the disciples were isolated in their suffering. Did they believe in their power or thought they had to solve it themselves? In any case, when they are separated from Jesus and isolated, they are trapped in fear when facing the headwind.
Everyone can make the mistake of hiding their weaknesses, believing they have to be strong, and be alone without seeking help. I am prone to making this mistake, so I tend to suffer and worry alone. Nowadays, under the influence of the coronavirus, it is especially easy for us, like our disciples, to experience a headwind in our daily lives, stop dead in our tracks, become isolated, and be caught in fear.
Peter, who showed a pitiful performance, is also how we look like. But he also sets an example of faith here. That is to call for help. He stood on the water and when he was sinking, he cried out, "Lord, help me." He knew that he should call for help, and who to call for help. We can emulate the fact that he saw Jesus, remembered it, and cried for help.
Cry for help
At this time, Jesus said to Peter, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" It is not to saying that the one with doubts have no faith. It is to encourage Peter, who has faith but cannot be strengthened by his own faith and showed weakness due to fear and anxiety. It's not a criticism, but a word of encouragement.
In the Gospels, the faith of Peter and his disciples was small. They were afraid over and over and over again. They couldn't put to heart Jesus' words and even after witnessing many miracles, sought a power of their own rather than faith. Faith is not so easy to grow and strengthen.
Still, faith was present. Even small, faith was present. Faith is not solid. It is constantly in motion, growing and shrinking. Faith grows when you exercise it and becomes smaller when you let it rest. For example, just like you can exercise and train the muscles you have lost in your self-restraining life, when your faith is small, you can just exercise it.
One way is to never give up on asking Jesus for help. I am also a person of weak faith who suffers from the headwinds in the darkness which I can’t look past and begins to sink because of fear even if I mustered my courage to take a step forward. That faith is strengthened by experiencing being called upon by Jesus, taking his hand and standing again, and being helped by Jesus.
When the disciples were afraid, Jesus immediately called out and immediately reached out. Jesus was able to reach out immediately because he was so close to them. Even if we think that we are suffering from waves in the headwind and are isolated, Jesus can walk in the waves to where we are to the point where we can hear his voice and take his hand.
Sometimes you can overcome it yourself. Sometimes it is supported by your faith. But you don't have to rely on yourself and endure the challenges. Instead, it is also important to know how to call for help and to be able to ask for help.
Jesus listens to our cry, and he will take our hand and help us. The help may come in the form of a miracle of walking on water, or it may be given through a person. Faith grows stronger by seeking help and receiving it. Jesus always listens to our call for help. Many people in the Bible, not just Peter, asked God for help. We are also allowed to cry, "Lord, please help us."
