すぐそばまで降った神様
クリスマス、おめでとうございます。毎年、たくさんの方々と共に喜び祝っているクリスマスのキャンドルサービスですが、今年は例年のようなプログラムを行うことはできませんでした。それでも、救い主イエス・キリストの誕生を共に祝うことができることを感謝しております。
イエス様は、ユダヤのベツレヘムで、一人の女性マリアから、一人の赤ん坊として生まれました。それはどのような人とも同じように、守られ、養われることが必要な姿で生まれたということです。イエス様は、当時の赤ん坊がみんなそうされていたように、産着にくるまれ、飼い葉桶に寝かされました。
イエス様は、神様が私たちと共におられる、ということを、身をもって表してくださいます。それは赤ん坊のイエス様も同じです。イエス様は私たちが腕の中に抱くことができる赤ん坊の姿でこの世に来られました。神様はそれほどまでに、私たちの近くに来られるのです。聖書が伝える神様は、王宮の玉座に座っているのではなく、また天の上からこの世を覗いておられるのでもありません。神様は私たちが生きるこの地上に、まったく無防備な姿で降り、私たちが触れることができるほど近くにおられます。
赤ん坊が母の腕に身を委ねるように、神の子であるイエス様は私たちにその身をささげます。神様は私たちをそのように愛してくださるのです。ご自身に応えられた者だけを評価するような神ではなく、むしろご自身がすべてを差し出すほどに私たちを愛し、私たちがその愛によって生きるようにしてくださるのです。
すべての人のためであり、あなたのためでもある
イエス様の誕生を、最初に知らされたのは、野宿しながら夜通し羊の群れの番をしていた羊飼いたちでした。彼らは当時の身分制社会の中で、底辺すれすれに位置づけられていました。彼らが見守っていた羊たちは、彼らのものではありません。羊飼いたちは雇われてその仕事をしており、場合によっては盗賊や野獣から身をもって羊を守らなければなりませんでした。
真夜中の野原にいた羊飼いたちの前に、突然現れた天使がこう告げました。
「恐れるな、わたしは、民全体に与えられる大きな喜びを告げる。今日ダビデの町で、あなたがたのために救い主がお生まれになった。この方こそ主メシアである。あなたがたは、布にくるまって飼い葉桶の中に寝ている乳飲み子を見つけるであろう。これがあなたがたへのしるしである。」（2:10～12）
この喜び――救い主の誕生――は、すべての人々に与えられるものです。神様は、特定の人たちのためだけにイエス様を送ったのではありません。すべての人のために――誰一人の例外もなく、すべての人のために、神様はイエス様をこの世に送られたのです。どこにいようと、どんな人であろうと、神様はすべての人を愛しておられます。ですから、イエス様は私たちのためにもこの世に来られたのです。
ただ、天使はあえて羊飼いたちに、「あなたがたのために救い主がお生まれになった」と言いました。全ての人にはもちろん羊飼いも含まれていますが、わざわざ「あなたがたのため」と強調して言ったのは、羊飼いたちが自分たちのための救い主でもあることを信じるためであったかもしれません。
彼らは格差が拡大する中で、生きるための競争に駆り立てられ、日々の働きに疲れ果てていました。彼らの生活は厳しく、そこから零れ落ちないことに必死でした。彼らは神様への祈りを日々ささげてはいても、神様について詳しく知る機会もなく、神様との距離を感じていました。そうだからこそ天使は、あなたがたのためにも救い主は生まれたのだ、と強調したのです。神様は、あなたがたのことも忘れてはいない。あなた一人のことも忘れることはない。あなたも神様にとって大切な存在なのだから。
この知らせを信じることができるために、羊飼いたちに与えられたしるしは、産着にくるまって、飼い葉桶の中に寝ている乳飲み子でした。それは羊飼いたちのためのしるしでした。飼い葉桶があるようなところならば、彼らが追い返される心配はありません。救い主はあなたのためにも起こったのだ、ということを伝えようとする神様の深い配慮がここにも感じられます。
貧しく、弱いところから作られる平和
天使のお告げのあと、天の大軍が加わり、神様を讃美してこのように歌いました。
「いと高きところには栄光、神にあれ。地には平和、御心に適う人にあれ。」（2:14）
救い主イエス・キリストは、平和の主です。その平和とは、魂の平安や心の安心ということだけではありません。人間も動物もその他の生物も、自然も、国や社会も含む、この世界が、神様に良しとされた状態になること、御心に適った世界となることが、イエス様が導く平和です。
イエス様の生まれた時代は、“Pax Romana”（ローマの平和）と呼ばれていた時代です。その時代には大きな戦争はなく、国内は安定しているように見えました。けれども、そこには多くの奴隷がおり、支配された地域の人々は搾取され続けていました。貧しい人たち、弱い人たちが取り残されたり、捨てられたりするのが、ローマの平和でした。
古代から、「平和」とは何か、ということを為政者が決めてきました。彼らが考えた自分の民にとっての平和こそ「平和」であると言われてきました。そのことは現代でもあまり変わっていません。けれども天使たちが歌った平和は、それとは異なります。天使が歌う平和は、あらゆる生命が満ち満ちた状態、神様による祝福が満ちあふれた状態です。神様は全ての人の生命に影響を与えているあらゆる力のバランスを整え、この世界に神様の秩序を回復することによって、昔も今も、平和を実現しようとしておられます。
神様によって創られ、生命を与えられた私たち人間には、神様の平和を保つ責任が与えられました。しかし人はその責任を放棄し、自分勝手な「平和」を求めたり、神様の平和を忘れてしまったりします。そこに人間の罪があります。
誰もが平和を願います。すべての人が平和を望みます。だからこそ、平和の主イエス様は、すべての人に与えられた大きな喜びです。ただ、イエス様がもたらす平和は、ローマ皇帝のような絶対的な力による支配によって作られるものではありません。イエス様の平和は、飼い葉桶に寝かされた乳飲み子の姿に表されるものです。
神様は、貧しい人、弱くされた人、さらには平和を奪われ、暴力に晒される人の声を聞いておられます。イエス様は嘆き悲しむ声が聞こえるところまで降り、そこで共に生きることから平和を作り出すのです。私たちは今や、世界的な危機に直面する時代を生きています。新型ウイルスの感染症も、深刻な環境危機も、人が争って乗り越えられるものではありません。イエス様がそうされたように、最も小さくされ、弱くされた人々の声を聞くことから、この世界の平和・すべての人のための平和が作られていきます。
平和への道という希望
天使の知らせを聞いた羊飼いたちは、「主が知らせてくださったその出来事を見ようではないか」と話し合い、急いでベツレヘムへ行きました。そしてそこで、飼い葉桶に寝かされた乳飲み子であったイエス様を探し当てました。
クリスマス――イエス・キリストの誕生――は、すべての人のための神様からのプレゼントです。そこには希望があります。暗闇に覆われた中であっても、将来を指し示す光が照らされているのです。
中国の思想家である魯迅は、希望についてこのような言葉を残しています。
「思うに希望とは、もともとあるものともいえぬし、ないものともいえない。それは地上の道のようなものである。もともと地上には道はない。歩く人が多くなれば、それが道になるのだ。」
私たちは羊飼いと共に、飼い葉桶に寝かされた乳飲み子であるイエス様を見て、二つのことを教えられます。一つは、イエス様が私たちと共におられること、つまり神様が私たちを愛し、私たちと共にいてくださることです。そしてもう一つは、イエス様が私たちに先立って歩み、道を作ってくださることです。その道は、平和へと向かう道です。そこには希望があります。
自分の全てを差し出して、全くの無防備になって人と共に生き、貧しい人・弱くされた人の友となり、全ての人を見捨てないがゆえに十字架で死なれた方。そのようにして平和への道を開いてくださった方が、飼い葉桶に寝かされた乳飲み子、イエス・キリストでした。神様は私たちにも、イエス様の誕生を知らせてくださいました。すべての人のために、そしてあなたがたのために生まれたイエス様の誕生です。私たちも、イエス様のもとに行き、神様の愛に触れるように、天使たちが呼びかけています。そして、イエス様と共に生き、イエス様の後に従って生きるように、招かれています。
そのことを感謝しながら、救い主の誕生を喜び祝いましょう。そしてこの地に平和が、すべての人々にあるように、共に祈りたいと思います。

"A saviour for you "

God who came down to be close with us
Blessed Christmas. Every year, we would celebrate the Christmas candle service with many people, but this year we couldn't do the usual program. Nevertheless, I am grateful to be able to celebrate the birth of the Saviour Jesus Christ together.
Jesus was born in Bethlehem, Judea, by a woman called Mary. It means that, like any person, he was born in a form that needs to be protected and nourished. Jesus was wrapped in a maternity garment and laid in a manger, just as all babies at the time did.
Jesus proved that God is with us with his birth. It's the same with baby Jesus. Jesus came to this world in the form of a baby that we can hold in our arms. God went this far just to come close to us. The Bible tells us that God is not sitting on the throne of the royal palace, nor is he looking down at the world from above. God descends on this earth where we live, completely defenceless, and so close that we can touch it.
Just as a baby puts himself in the arms of his mother, the same way Jesus, the Son of God, gives us himself. God loves us that much. It is not a God who accepts only those who have responded to him, but rather he loves us so much that he offers everything and lets us live by that love.
For everyone and for you
The first to be informed of the birth of Jesus were the shepherds who were watching the flock of sheep at night while camping. Shepherds were positioned at the bottom of the social structure at that time. The sheep they were watching over were not theirs. The shepherds were hired to do the job, and in some cases had to protect themselves from bandits and beasts.
In front of the shepherds in the field at midnight, an angel suddenly appeared and said:
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (2: 10-12)
This joy-the birth of the Saviour-is given to all. God did not send Jesus just for certain people. For everyone, without exception, God sent Jesus into the world. God loves everyone, no matter where they are or who they are. That is why Jesus came to this world for us as well.
However, the angel told the shepherds like this, "A saviour was born for you". The shepherds are included in the ‘everyone’, of course, but the emphasis on "for you" was probably so that the shepherds can believe that the saviour was born for them as well.
As the inequality widened, they were pressured by the competition to live and were exhausted from their daily work. Their lives were tough, and they were desperate not to fall down. Even though they prayed to God every day, they did not have the opportunity to know more about God and felt distanced from God. That is why the angel emphasized that the Saviour was born for them as well. God has not forgotten about you either. He will never forget you. Because you are also important to God.
To be able to believe this news, the sign given to the shepherds was a baby wrapped in a maternity garment and sleeping in a manger. It was a sign for the shepherds. Wherever there are mangers, there is no need to worry about them being driven back. You can also feel God's deep concern as he tries to convey to you that the Saviour has came for you as well.
Peace that comes from the poor and the weak
After the angel's announcement, a large army of heaven joined and praised God and sang like this.
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests.” (2:14)
The Saviour Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace. That peace is not just about peace of mind and peace of heart. The peace that Jesus leads that this world, including humans, animals, other living things, nature, nations, and societies, will be in a state that God deems good and that it will be a world that is according to His will.
The time when Jesus was born was called "Pax Romana" (Peace in Rome). There was no major war at that time, and the country seemed to be stable. However, there were many slaves there, and the people of the dominated areas continued to be exploited. It was the peace of Rome that was built on the poor and the weak who were left behind or abandoned.
Since ancient times, the politicians have decided what "peace" is. It has been said that the peace they thought of for their people was "peace." That hasn't changed much in modern times. But the peace sung by the angels is different. Peace sung by angels is a state full of all life, a state full of blessings by God. God has been and still is trying to achieve peace by balancing all the forces that affect the lives of all and restoring God's order to this world.
We human beings, who were created and given life by God, were given the responsibility to maintain God's peace. However, people give up their responsibilities and seek selfish "peace" or forget about God's peace. There is human sin there.
Everyone wishes for peace. Everyone wants peace. That is why Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is a great joy given to all. However, the peace that Jesus brings is not created by the rule of absolute power like the Roman emperor. The peace of Jesus is represented by the appearance of a baby lying in a manger.
God hears the voices of the poor, the weak, and even those who were the target of violence and deprived of peace. Jesus descends to the point where he can hear the mourning voice and creates peace by living together with them. We are now living in an era facing a global crisis. Neither the infectious disease of the new virus nor the serious environmental crisis can be overcome by human beings whilst fighting one another. By listening to the voices of the smallest and weakest people, as Jesus did, peace in this world and peace for all will be created.
Hope that leads to peace
The shepherds who heard the news of the angels said to one another, "Let’s go see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." and hurried to Bethlehem. Then, there, they found Jesus, a baby lying in a manger.
Christmas-the birth of Jesus Christ-is a gift from God for all. There is hope there. Even in the darkness, the light that points to the future is illuminated.
Chinese thinker Lu Xun has left such words about hope.
“Hope cannot be said to exist, nor can it be said not to exist. It is just like roads across the earth. For actually the earth had no roads to begin with, but when many pass one way, a road is made.”
Together with the shepherd, we see Jesus, the baby laid in the manger, and we are taught two things. One is that Jesus is with us, that is, God loves us and is with us. And the other is that Jesus will walk ahead of us and make the way for us. That road is the way to peace. There is hope there.
Jesus showed everything about himself, lived with others completely defenceless, became friends with the poor and weakened, and ultimately died on the cross for everyone. The one who paved the way for peace in this way was Jesus Christ, a baby laid in a manger. God also informed us of the birth of Jesus. It is the birth of Jesus, born for all and for you. Angels are calling us to go to Jesus and touch God's love. And he is inviting you to live with Jesus and follow him.
Let us be grateful for that and celebrate the birth of the Saviour. And I would like to pray together that peace is in this land for all.
